Over the Line by Tom Palmer #firstpassreview

Over the lineJack is a footballer and his dream is to play for his country but there is a war going on. Everyone is calling footballers cowards so Jack has no choice but to join the army.

Jack joins the footballer battalion so that maybe he might be able to play again. He does play again and manages to play in a cup game and eventually fulfils his dream and plays and scores for England.

This is a good book because it makes the reader think about the war but also creates a happy atmosphere by saying jack scores for England. The writes used changes of mood to do this – the book is also emotional as Jack’s friends die in the war.

I would recommend this book because it has a very good story and shows you two different parts of the main character’s life. jack is a very determined character and also quite helpful. At the beginning he is quite selfish.  I think the lesson from this book is you should never give up hope.

I am Thunder book review

I Am Thunder by [Khan, Muhammad]

Recently I have read the book ” I am Thunder” by Mohammed Khan. I read this book In Modern Studies as we had a book box filled with books specially chosen by our librarian. I can tell you now this book has changed the way I look at reading. It was the best book I had ever read without exaggeration.

This book is about 15-year-old Muzna who wants to become a writer but her controlling parents who have extreme views on culture want her to become a doctor. She is forced to leave school as her best friend is shamed in a scandal, however, she realises that bullies and repulsive people are always there. Muzna stands up for herself but there are prejudices everywhere. Tables are turned when the unpopular and confident Arif show an interest in her. he has a secret with an extreme view of religion. Will Myzna stay quiet and listen to her parents or stand up and agree with Arif?

I really liked this book as I have witnessed cultures forcing decisions on people and this book shows how wrong it is.

I really recommend this book as it is eye-opening and shows the reality of our world.

Barrington Stoke and S1

Books are books right? They all look the same, feel the same and smell the same? Well, no. If you take the time to open a Barrington Stoke titles you will be aware that you are looking at a book with a difference. The pages are well banana coloured, the chapters short and easily accessible, the font just the bit easier on the eye and the page set up just that bit simpler to follow.

Is this a fluke? Has the world gotten a little bit stranger?
Nope- this is how Barrington Stoke see the world or indeed how they want their readers to see the world.
As a fluent reader from an early age I find it difficult to comprehend just how hard it must be for some pupils with specific reading issues to pick up and read a book.

If words danced in front of your eyes and shapes and order lost their meaning would you keep going? Barrington Stoke books and those like them make reading easier. Please don’t just take my word for it take the words of my S1 class a mix of fluent and not so fluent readers who were up for the challenge of reading some of my over 200 different Barrington Stoke titles.

We started with a very honest lesson about how we saw ourselves as readers and what reading meant to us. Several pupils would not class themselves as readers at all with one or two saying they didn’t read at all. For some reading was a pleasure which they often indulged in after school for others just another bit of classwork.

Our challenge was to read 3 titles over the course of 3 months. So far, after 3 weeks most pupils have read 2 titles. I could not be prouder and neither could they.

I chose one lesson to be reflective- How are they getting on? What do they like and what don’t they like? How do they see themselves now?

Proud to be a reader

Proud to be a reader

Proud to be a reader

proud to be a reader

So scary I had to hide behind my book!

Here are some quotes from my brilliant readers to speak for themselves
Here is what they had to say when I asked them I have ( or have not) enjoyed reading this Barrington Stoke book because:
I just enjoyed it I don’t really know why.

It is very interesting because there are lots of characters in it and a lot of different storyline.

It was really interesting when it came to the Saturday game because I didn’t know what Blake was going to choose. This book made me not want to stop.

It was about football
The font is much easier to read
The books are short and really exciting to read!

It is very interesting and mysterious and at some moments it can be a little bit funny

I have never read a book like this

The pages are different colours and it is easier for me because I have Meares Irlen.
It was really exciting and I wanted to know what happened next.

I have loved this book because it was a horror/sport/romance novel. It covered lots of different types of things which kept me interested.

it is quite upsetting at the fact that Matthew hasn’t got a lot of money and is getting bullied, but I found it interesting when he got the new uniform and the bully ended up being the one who got bullied.

I found the story to be interesting. I wanted to know whether or not he would be able to convince people he was really ill.

I like the story.

It is really exciting and tense. You don’t know if he is going to succeed or not.

These books are better because it’s a better font because my dyslexia I find it harder for me to read fonts
I can not tell you how proud I am of these pupils willing to give this project a go and being able to see the results.
Who knows how far they will go after this?

Calling all readers

I am looking for smart cookies to read and review new books in the library.

Do you think you could do that?
Reviews do not have to be long but they can not be boring!
If you have the magic touch let me know and I shall publish your work here on the library web site for all to see and cheer!

McRoarrrrrrrr!

The Rampage is a strange book with an unusual twist of events. Written by Ann Evans and part of a sequel it follows on from other books. Despite this, it is an easy to follow, intriguing read! I found the whole aspect and idea of the novel clever and descriptive. And even better, it is set in Scotland!

I like the way the writer makes you feel part of the bone shaking experience, and the story really touches on old prehistoric animals which is nice. This makes the book very unique and definitely not boring. Overall I would approve this read to all ages and would absolutely recommend the author to anyone.

Falling for a good read

THE BOY WHO FELL DOWN EXIT 43 by Harriet Goodwin
In this book, a boy called Finn’s dad died and he was really upset about it. The dad had been teaching him to drive. Finn took the car and started driving it, but when he was driving the rain got really bad and Finn ended up crashing.
As he crashed he fell into a place called the underworld, this is where the people who have died end up. His was Dad was not there as instead of going into the underworld he became a star.
When Finn got there no-one could believe a human was in the underworld. At the same time someone called Jessie from the underworld was stuck on earth. Once Jessie got back it caused water to come through. Water kills people from the underworld. Jessie and Finn end up saving the underworld by completing a very tough challenge.
I think this book fitted really well with the fantasy theme as there was strange characters and lots of potions. I think this was a good fantasy book and I wasn’t expecting it to be very good as I don’t usually like fantasy books.

Irish trouble

‘The Guns Of Easter’ written by Gerard Whelan. In my opinion it was a very enjoyable book. The genre is war and conflict.

The story begins in Dublin, Ireland where a boy called Jimmy and is family live in the slums. He goes through a journey which leads him all over Dublin. Although this is at a time where war has broken out and the Irish rebels are fighting the British for independency. Jimmy however has to go and get money from his Auntie who lives on the other side of Dublin. Jimmy makes many friends on the way both on the Irish side and British side. There are various themes in this book such as friendship and war. Will Jimmy be able to get of the streets in time before the British put a curfew in place to shoot on sight anyone who is seen outside?

Wake up!

The book I read was The Sleeping Sword by Michael Morpurgo. The beginning of the story was good but it got event better as the story went on! It was about a boy called Michael who goes blind and he and his father find a strange shield and sword on their farm grounds. He has a visit from a ghost who says he has to go give King Arthur his sword back, Michael doesn’t understand how he can do this as the king is dead but he does what he is told. He finds King Arthur with his best friend’s sister who he has a mad crush on! And is cured of his blindness!!!

In this book you find out that Michael is an adventurous boy. It is not too long and is quite easy to read and you could follow along with the story no problem. The description throughout the book is good. The book was good and I would recommend it too anyone who likes short fantasy books.

Fantasy as it should be

The book I read was The Wind Singer and it was a really good example of fantasy because there was lots of magic and made up people. It started in a city called Aramanth where Kestrel and Bowman live in a district called Orange. Endless exams and ratings are the only way forward after the Morah took over. However Kestrel wasn’t having any of it and runs away from everything and ends up at the top of the highest tower in Aramanth its self. She bangs on the door and a small grey-haired, old man answers the door, wearing a blue cloak (the only person who can wear blue is the emperor.)

So he tells Kestrel to go on a quest to destroy the Zars. She does so with the help of her twin brother Bowman and their school mate- Mumpo – and eventually the wind singer sings again.

I enjoyed this book because it was a good example of fantasy and kept me on the edge of my seat!
