Holocaust Memorial Day
Today we welcomed two very special visitors to school to help us learn more from the Holocaust Memorial Day.
We were delighted when Carol Gillespie from Education Scotland told us that Arn Chorn Pond, a Cambodian genocide survivor, flautist and human rights activist and Dr Racelle Weiman, a Holocaust educator from USA, would be visiting the school to give first-hand accounts of what it is like to experience such atrocities and pupils then had the opportunity to ask questions to help them understand the impact of these significant historical events.
Our visitors toured the school and then were treated to a performance from Reels on Wheels and 2 wonderful songs from our senior choir. Thanks to Dylan and Gemma for their solo performances. We were then delighted to listen to Arn as he played a Cambodian lullaby for us on his flute.
This was followed by a question and answer session in class Orkney. We were so proud of our young people as they listened to the stories from Arn and Rachelle and asked lots of relevant questions.
This afternoon classes Orkney and Shetland participated in the GLOW TV event as Arn discussed more about his life in Cambodia and what he had to do to survive.
Look out for mAIRwaves FM next week as we will share some of our question and answer session with you.
Have a look at some of the photos from the event and read the lovely comments left in our visitors book from Arn and Racelle.
