Winter has Arrived

Primary 2 has been very busy staying warm in our classroom.   Some of primary 2 have been learning about 2D shape we have learnt about the properties of hexagons and pentagons.  Others in P2 have started to learn about data handling.  We began to learn about Venn diagrams in P2b with Miss Reid.  She will be working with us for the next few weeks.

This week we explored some features of the Rainforest. We learnt about the four layers of the Rainforest, which are: the Emergent layer, the Canopy layer, the Understory and the Forest Floor.   We also did a piece of descriptive writing using time markers and adjectives.

It’s a Jungle Out There

We have now moved on from the transport topic and our new topic this term is The Rainforest. At school this week, we have made a poster about what we already know about the rainforest. We put what animals we think are in the rainforest. We think that elephants, birds, flamingos and lots of other animals live and play in there. P2a think that it rains a lot in the rainforest. We also think that trees and vines live in there too. Some of us think there are pine trees and palm trees and Eilidh P has told us all about Monkey Puzzle Trees which we will do some research on. Adam B has been telling us that vines are green and the bottom of the pine and palm trees are brown but the leaves are green. In writing we have been using the openers: First, Next, After, Then and Finally to describe what was happening in the rainforest picture.

Welcome back to Term 2 – 28th October 2016

On our first week back after the October holidays P2a and P2b learnt about different types of transport around the world. We really liked the sea plane that takes off and lands on water and some of us would love to travel by camel in the desert.

In P2b, we are now getting good at counting up in 2s and 10s. The Squares are learning about tens and units and the Triangles have been learning how to calculate change in money.  Together they have been learning about halves and quarters. The Circles are learning about the properties of 2D shapes.

Next week we will be starting a new topic. We will tell you more next week.

Top Mathematicians and Explorers – 7th October 2016

In P2a, the triangles group have been learning about money this week. We have been making money plates to make the amounts in the middle of the plate using 1p, 2p, 5p, 10p and 20p coins. The Squares maths group have been learning about the times o’clock and half past. We know that when the big hand is at the 12 it is o’clock and when the big hand is at the 6 it is half past. If it is half past, we know that 30 minutes have passed the hour. If it is o’clock then 0 minutes have passed the hour. The Circles group have been learning about family facts. We have been making subtraction and addition calculations.

We have been learning about different ships in our transport topic. We have been learning about Christopher Columbus who is an explorer. He started the communications between America and Europe. We have been learning that one of Christopher Columbus’ ships is called the Santa Maria and he had 3 ships altogether.

Our Transport Topic – 30th September 2016

Primary 2 are well underway on our Transport topic. This week we have been learning about cars and bicycles.  We learnt about the very first cars and we are writing about what we think cars will look like in the future.

Next we began to learn about the history of bicycles and we went on to build our own Penny-farthing bicycles out of pipe cleaners. This was part of our technology lesson.

We have also begun new topics in maths. The Squares are learning about time.  There are 60 minutes in 1 hour and 30 minutes in half an hour.  We are also learning to tell the time in analogue and digital formats.

The Circles are learning about Fact Families and how addition and subtraction are related.

The Triangles have been learning about money. We have been making totals up with coins and seeing how many different ways we can find

Have a nice weekend.

From Primary 2.

A very active week! – 16th September 2016

The Squares and Triangles group have been measuring the weight of fruit. We used some fruit to make a 1kg fruit salad. We put the fruit on scales to see if they were 1kg.

The class went to Eastwood High School for P.E. and we played the traffic light game. When the teacher calls ‘red’ you have to make any shape and hold it for 4 seconds. When the teacher says ‘amber’ we have to jump on the spot and when she says ‘green’ we have to run. We were also learning throwing and catching ball skills.

We have been learning about the water crisis in some places in Africa, Latin America and South East Asia. We drew buckets of dirty water to remember that some people don’t have clean water to drink. We watched a video and took notes on our whiteboards to write down round our bucket pictures.

A little bit of everything – 9th September 2016

This week Primary 2 has played team games and balancing games at PE.

As part of our Global Goals Topic we have been looking at Water. This week we explored how we get clean water to our homes and school and how we get the dirty water taken away again.

We began writing this week. We wrote a short story called ‘The Cave’.  We had to include at least three describing words.

Primary 2 has also been learning our number bonds by heart. We will keep practising this.

Science – The Water Cycle – 2nd September 2016

In Science we have been learning about the Water Cycle. We have learned how the water is evaporated by the sun and made into gas. It floats up into the air and condenses into a cloud. The cloud gets heavier and it turns into a liquid and it starts to rain and this is called precipitation. The ground collects the water and it happens over and over again. We watched a video on this and did a sheet matching the words to the pictures.

Ask us about the Water Cycle song!

Welcome Back Primary 2 – 26 August 2016

On Monday we went to our new classroom in the module and we saw our friends and new teachers.

We went to see the building site and we got to see builders putting pipes under the ground. We had to wear white and yellow helmets and vests. On the building site we saw a big, wide, orange digger.

In P.E., the class went to Eastwood High School and we played a game where we had to put our body parts on the ground when the teacher called them.

In our topic we have begun to explore the different types of materials that we might use to build buildings. We also talked about all the jobs that people do to create a building. Some of the jobs we thought of were electricians, cement mixers, site managers and architects.

Primary 2b have had a very happy second week at school. In maths we have all been working on our number bonds. They are getting easier all the time.
We have started learning French, we have been using different greetings and learning instruction words. We also listened to French Café music.

This week we also had a ‘meet the teacher’ afternoon where mums, dads, and other caregivers came to see our new classroom. We set personal targets for in school and out of school while they were here.

We are looking forward to another exciting week of Primary 2 next week.
Have a nice weekend.

Primary 1 amazed their teachers today when they brought toy boxes into school that they had made.
