Sustainability!

As part of our Life on Barralay topic, p6a have been exploring ways to live more sustainably. After some fact finding on plastic, we decided to make a plastic pledge to say how we will cut down on our usage. It takes 500 to 1000 years for plastic waste away, and does lots of damage to the environment in that time! We’re hoping that our plastic pledge will help others think about how they use plastic and we’re excited to see that the government are thinking about this too.

We also thought about how to reuse our plastic. In a technologies lesson, we turned old plastic into new and useful designs. In the end, we had a huge range of new things, such as bird feeders, book marks, vases, pet toys, decorations, pencil holders, dog treat containers and even a watering can!

Cate’s container for her puppy’s treats!

Oliver’s new watering can/bottle. Watch out Nathan!

Muhammad Mu’aadh created a vase for his mum.

Zoe created this beatiful wishing well which she later filled with hand lotion.

Harris made these book marks using old toilet roll tubes – each different haired book mark represents one of his friends.

Libby made a toy for her lovely dogs, Loki and Missy, using an old sock (hope they don’t mind the smell!) and old recycled string.

If all children could bring in something ‘old’ for Friday. Examples include old toilet roll tubes, glass jars, tins, etc. We will think about what we will make throuhgout the week to allow time for necessary materials to be gathered.

The Festival of Holi

Today P6A and Mrs Macintyre  have been re-enacting Holi, a festival in India where Hindus throw coloured paint over each other in a joyful celebrattion to remember that good triumphs over villany. We did this because we have been learning about this festival and the story behind it in RME. We re-enacted this from using balloons with food couloring in the balloons. It was extremely joyful. We did this after lunch.
