The Mayflower and Thanksgiving

This week P3a have been learning about The Mayflower and Thanksgiving.

The Mayflower was a really old ship that took 102 Pilgrims  from England to America 400 years ago.  A Pilgrim is somebody who travels because of religious reasons.   The trip took 65 days!

When the Pilgrims arrived in America they struggled to survive because there was little to eat and the weather was very cold.  In America they built a village called Pilmoth Village.  The Pilgrim children didn’t go to school, instead they would read The Bible.  The children would play with marbles for fun.  In America, the Pilgrims made friends with the Wampanoag Tribe.   The Pilgrims ate lots of sea food, their favourite sea food was mussels.  They also ate a lot of duck.

The Pilgrims had a big feast 400 years ago and this was the first Thanksgiving.  They had this feast because they had a successful harvest.  Americans now celebrate Thanksgiving on the last Thursday of every November to remember the Pilgrims and to give thanks to God for all the things in their lives.

We created our own Mayflower.  Everyone made their own Pilgrim  head using different materials.  There is a picture of our artwork below for you to see.
