An afternoon at the movies…

Two weeks ago in writing we spent time looking at the features of plays scripts before writing our own.

Since then, we became the directors, using iMovie to turns these scripts into actual films. We worked on them over the course of a week or so, all leading up to our Friday afternoon premier! We enjoyed watching the selection of different genres ranging from action to comedy, murder mystery to sci-fi, and even one with a very serious message about mental health.

Of course, it wouldn’t have been a true movie premier without a red carpet and some popcorn!

Victorian Baking

Did someone say cake?!

We decided we wanted to explore various Victorian Foods, the most delicious of all being Victoria Sponge, of course! We gave this recipe a modern twist by turning them in to cupcakes.

Ask us what skills we were using during this cooking session, and why not see if you can use them again at home to make your own Victoria sponge?

Letter from Parliament

Last week we received a letter from our local MP, Paul Masterton, all the way from the House of Commons. He wrote to congratulate us on our participation in the Tomorrow’s Older People workshop. We decided that we’d write back to him to say thank you and to ask more about what is happening at Huntly Park.

Victorian Houses

Over the last couple of weeks, we have spent time creating our own Victorian Houses after deciding that we were keen to look at Victorian Architecture as part of our IDL topic.

We studied some of the features of Victorian Houses – such as the large bay windons, storm doors, sandstone – and compared these to our own homes. Some of us actually live in Victorian houses or buildings from around that era. Others live in houses that have some of these features. Can you spot any of these architectural features on the houses that we created?

When showcasing our houses, we discussed some of the design challenges that we encountered during the construction process.

Alex, Eden and Emilie had challenges with attaching the roof. Alex said that he would have attached it at an earlier stage if he was to re-do the construction phase. We also agreed that a more varied range of glues (perhaps a glue gun) may also have solved this problem.

Rafay and Ewan worked hard to improve their finishing touches and small details after a painting error. They thought creatively to cover up a paint smudge, using tissue paper ivy to hid this! Overall, the ivy looked so effective, that many other houses decided to try this technique too.

What design challenges did you encounter, and how did you solve them?

Toys, toys and more toys!

This week we’ve been looking at Victorian toys and comparing them to our toys today. While our modern day toys are mainly based around technology in some way, we found that some Victorian toys can actually be made by hand! We enjoyed creating our own peg dolls and spinning tops.

We also went outside, using chalk to create hopscotch and some of our own games, just as Victorian children would have done. While there, we took turns to use the diablo, another traditional Victorian toy. I think we all need more practise!

Homework W/C 28.01.19

Please find this weeks homework listed below:

Spelling –

Monday and Tuesday – Words x 4

Wednesday and Thursday – Your choice of active spelling strategy.

Literacy –

Rowlings – Page 48 of Journey to the River Sea

Walliams – Page 45 of Kensukes Kingdom

Dahls – Page 50 of Adolphus Tips

This Monday we carried out an audit of our Reciprocal Reading skills, looking at which areas we feel confident in, and which require more work. When completing reading homework this week please focus on any of the skills which you feel require more practise.

For example… if you identified that your summarising skills could be improved, try reading a few pages and then summarising back to a parent or sibling what has happened. If you struggle with clarifying, use a dictionary or parent to help you with the meaning of words. Remember to look for clues in the text about what words might mean too.

Our homework diaries have a break down of the reciprocal reading skills and can be used as a prompt.

Maths –

This week you will find your maths homework in the homework section on ‘Education City’. Please complete the three activities allocated to your group. If you have any issues with digital technology, please let me know!

Victorian Classrom

We had an amazing – and slightly scary – time at Scotland Street Museum as part of our Victorian Classroom experience. We learned all about how it would’ve been for Victorian children, how and what they learned, and even the various ways that they were punished! Hats off to Heather who was a great sport for wearing the embarrassing Dunce hat! See some of our photos below – note the numerous scared expressions!
