Primary 5 produced a collection of fantastic 3D models of the local area, Giffnock. The designs were well researched, planned and executed beautifully. There was a huge selection of creative designs! Primary 6 and 7 were very impressed. Well done!

 

 

 

Cancer Research UK

Dr Saadia Karim visited Primary 5 to talk about her work for Cancer Research UK. She is a research scientist based at The Beatson and her area of expertise is Pancreatic Cancer. She spoke about her journey into science and what inspired her at school. The pupils learned lots of interesting information about the cells that make up our bodies. Did you know that there are more cells in the tip of your finger than people living in China? We also took part in a taste test to demonstrate the genes that we have inherited from our parents.

Primary 5 visited Giffnock Library to find out more about the history of the local area. They studied old photographs, maps and documents to gather information about the past. They worked in groups to discuss and share ideas. We discovered some interesting facts about Giffnock. Thank you to Amanda, local studies librarian.

As part of your child’s homework this term, I would like them to complete a personal research task.

Our Interdisciplinary Learning Topic this term is Our Local Area. The class have decided that they would like to design a 3D model linked to this subject area. This can be designed on the inside of a shoe box or it could be a free standing model. They might create a 3D map or bird’s eye view of Giffnock. Try to be as creative and colourful as possible!

The finished work should be submitted by Friday 31st May. If you have any questions or would like some further information, please do not hesitate to ask.

Did you know it is National Smile Month?

This year the focus for National Smile Month is on the topic of sugar consumption in relation to oral and general health. This year the competition’s aim is to create a sugar display to inform  peers and the community of hidden sugar and consumption.

The Childsmile team has invited P5  to design a colourful and bold sugar display raising awareness of sugar in our food and drinks. We have collected some popular food and drinks children consume during school  and used these in our display.

Miss Nielsen is teaching the class about digital literacy. Today the pupils were involved in discussions about what news is and what makes a story newsworthy. They worked collaboratively in groups to create newspaper companies. Next, they selected stories for their newspapers and evaluated their potential as important news stories.

We are looking for empty food and drink packaging for display. We are particularly interested in the sugar content of each product.

Primary 5 designed the plants and flowers that they would like to go in the large new planters in the playground. They got the opportunity to actually do some planting today with Ms Brown (Stella’s mum). One box is now full and we will be keeping a close eye on it over the coming days and weeks. Thank you to Ms Brown for helping us with this initiative, Food for Thought.
