The recent addition of a Girls Cycling Club to the Barrhead High School after schools programme is providing the opportunity for S1 to S6 girls to experience cycling in it’s many forms: track, downhill and cycle cross are those done so far. All girls are welcome at the club regardless of previous experience or ability.
Barrhead’s Cycling Club is organised by a number of enthusiastic cyclist teachers throughout the school, and will include trips to various venues around Glasgow, such as the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome and Whitelees Windfarm. Recent events at the club have included a trip to the outdoor cycle centre at Bellahouston Park and a fancy dress halloween cycle (where a number of onsie’s were out in show).
The club runs every Wednesday after school, meeting at the school theatre. In addition to this, club members meet Thursday lunchtimes in the community wing to socialise with one another and plan upcoming events.
Future plans for the club include using money supplied by the ‘Fit for Girls Programme’ to kit the girls out in team outfits: including helmets, tops, shorts or trousers and gloves.
