In S5/6 we offer two courses:
Higher Graphic Communication and National 4/5 Practical Metalworking
Higher Graphic Communication:
Our National Qualifications in Graphic Communication develop skills in graphic communication techniques, including the use of equipment, graphics materials and software, and build challenging, coherent and enjoyable journeys for learners through all levels. Combining elements of recognised professional standards for graphic communication with graphic design creativity and visual impact, the Courses also provide flexibility and choice in the use of manual and computer-aided graphics.
Higher Graphics is assessed in two ways:
Question paper 90 marks: 2 hours and 30 minutes (in the exam hall)
Assignment 50 Marks: 8 hours (in-class time)
N4/5 Practical Metalworking:
Practical Metalworking is practical, exploratory and experiential in nature. It combines elements of practical metalworking techniques and standard practice with elements of creativity.
The Course provides opportunities for learners to gain a range of practical metalworking skills and to use a variety of tools, equipment and materials.
The course also gives learners the opportunity to develop thinking, numeracy, employability, enterprise and citizenship skills.
The aims of the Course are to enable learners to develop:
♦ skills in metalworking techniques
♦ skills in measuring and marking out metal sections and sheet materials
♦ safe working practices in workshop environments
♦ practical creativity and problem-solving skills
♦ knowledge of sustainability issues in a practical metalworking context
National 4 Assessment consists of the following units:
- Practical Metalworking: Bench Skills
- Practical Metalworking: Machine Processes
- Practical Metalworking: Fabrication and Thermal Joining
- Added Value Unit: Making a Finished Product from Metal
The tolerance for National 4 is 1mm.
National 5 Assessment consists of the following:
Question paper 60 marks (this is scaled down to 30) 1 hour (in exam hall)
Assignment 70 marks: Time allocated in class
The tolerance for National 5 is 0.5mm.
