Mummification

We have been learning about how the Ancient Egyptians mummified the bodies of their pharaohs. First we acted it out and then we wrote instructions on how to mummify the body.

First they washed and cleaned the body and then they removed the brain. Next they made a slit on the left side of the body, removed the internal organs and placed each one in a canopic jar.

They then dried out the body and covered it with natron. It was left for 70 days.

They stuffed the body with linen and then wrapped it.

Finally, they placed a death mask on it before placing it in a sarcophagus.

The Great Kapok Tree

As part of our Rainforest topic we read the story – The Great Kapok tree. It tells the story of all the animals in the rainforest that are losing their homes and are dying because men are cutting down so many trees in the rainforest.

We were split into groups, and each group had to act out a part of the story.

I have experienced the energy and excitement of presenting/performing for audiences and being part of an audience for other people’s presentations/performances.  EXA 1-01a

World Book Day

We all enjoyed dressing up as our favourite book character for World Book Day. We found out about how authors describe characters and we studied Mr and Mrs Twit from The Twits by Roald Dahl.

There was a World Book Day assembly and we had to guess what books went with the illustrations we were shown.

We also made book covers of our favourite books. We had to include the title, author, write the blurb on the back and illustrate it. We are going to make a book buddy and display them in our library corner.

Handling Data

I have explored a variety of ways in which data is presented and can ask and answer questions about the information it contains. MNU 1-20a

I have used a range of ways to collect information and can sort it in a logical, organised and imaginative way using my own and others’ criteria. MNU 1-20b

Using technology and other methods, I can display data simply, clearly and accurately by creating tables, charts and diagrams, using simple labelling and scale. MTH 1-21a

We have been organising information in tables using tally marks.

We displayed information in pictograms, bar graphs, Venn and Carroll diagrams.

We also use spreadsheets to help us make bar graphs on the computer.

Polar Lands

By exploring climate zones around the world, I can compare and describe how climate affects living things. SOC 1-12b

By exploring a natural environment different from my own, I can discover how the physical features influence the variety of living things. SOC 1-13b

We have been learning about the people that live in the polar lands.

Silly Billy

As I listen or watch, I can identify and discuss the purpose, key words and main ideas of the text, and use this information for a specific purpose. LIT 1-04a

To show my understanding across different areas of learning, I can identify and consider the purpose I am aware of and able to express my feelings and am developing the ability to talk about them. HWB 1-01a

I know that we all experience a variety of thoughts and emotions that affect how we feel and behave and I am learning ways of managing them. HWB 1-02a

I understand that there are people I can talk to and that there are a number of ways in which I can gain access to practical and emotional support to help me and others in a range of circumstances.  HWB 1-03a

We read the book Silly Billy about a boy who worried about everything. His grandma told Billy about making a worry doll. He could then tell the worry doll all of his worries.

We explored some of the things we worry about and we all made worry dolls that we could tell our worries to. We also discussed who else we could tell our worries to and in class we made sure we all knew how to use our worry box. Lets hope we don’t have any more worries.
