TURNBULL HIGH SCHOOL PUPILS VISIT CELTIC CONNECTIONS

Glasgow’s annual folk, roots and world music festival, Celtic Connections celebrates Celtic music and its connections to cultures across the globe.

S2 pupils at Turnbull High School pupils were lucky enough to experience the joys of the Festival on Burns Day, 25th January 2017, where they heard traditional Scots Songs from Siobhan Miller, some great fiddle and guitar playing, as well as being introduced to the music of Brazil.

Celtic Connections was a very interesting experience for me. I have learned a lot about Scottish music and I got a taste of what Brazilian music sounds like – when I might never have had the opportunity to. I liked the Scottish music and the singer Siobhan Miller was extremely talented – the lights were spectacular with all the different colours, which went well with the music and with the beats. The Brazilian music was a very different music to what I am used to. It sounded exotic and the performers must have practised a lot to get to the speed that they were playing their music at! Celtic Connections was overall an amazing opportunity for me and I am very pleased that I went and got to witness this kind of music first hand.

I really enjoyed Celtic Connections because there were lots of different styles of music. It was very interesting to hear the different styles of music that different countries might play or listen to – like Brazilian music we heard. I also liked the fact that at the beginning of the show they were singing in Scots language, and that they involved us in what they were doing by getting us to sing along. Overall I really enjoyed Celtic Connections and I thought it was a great experience.

On Wednesday when we went to the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall to see two acts perform. I enjoyed the experience of going to the amazing concert which was full of people. I personally found the first band the best out of the two because it was mostly nice calm music and the wording of the songs was nice. I didn’t like the second band as much, but it was still interesting to hear live music from Brazil. In all I really enjoyed going to the concert hall and listening to the music that was played for us.

I loved the traditional songs played at the concert and the bands got all the people in the Royal Concert Hall up dancing along to the songs they were playing and it was a really good atmosphere. The last band we listened to were a Canadian/French band, they were also very good, they were singing some French songs and taught everyone some French so they could sing along. They also showed us some foot percussion, and I found that quite interesting because of the sounds they were making with just their feet. The full day was a great atmosphere and a very enjoyable experience

I really enjoyed Celtic Connections – was a great range of music throughout the day and all acts included the crowd

in some way. It was great! The lighting in The Royal Concert Hall was fabulous – multiple colours of lights flying all over the crowd and there was always a spotlight the groups performing!

In general I give Celtic Connections a five star rating!
