Snapshot

It’s been a busy start to the final term of the year, P3/4 have settled in really well. Have a look at what this week looked like for us!

Literacy

Each week our literacy lessons begin with our new phoneme focus and we created an extensive wordlist then used our Chromebooks and Thinking It Through jotters to practise spelling familiar and unfamiliar words with this week’s sound.

In our writing lessons we focussed on our Dumfries House visit and STEM day, illustrating our own storyboards, and using these storyboards as our planning notes. We challenged each other to retell our fun learning experiences with a focus on using a variety of sentence openers and conjunctions.

Numeracy

This term in P3/4 we have looked at dividing by sharing and grouping, multiplying and dividing by 10, finding parts of a whole and ordering fractions. We’ve used concrete materials, Chromebook resources and broadened our range of strategies to solve our numeracy problems. We’ve had fantastic group discussions on the strategies that best help us reach the correct answer. Have a look at some of our work!

IDL

Our Inter Disciplinary Learning topic this term has been the FIFA World Cup! So far we have identified and labelled the 7 continents, located the host nations of Canada, Mexico and USA as well as Scotland on a map, designed kits for Scotland’s Group C opponents based on their flags and wrote about scoring the winning goal in the World Cup final. This week we discussed what does and what doesn’t make a good interview, planned our questions and answers and used our acting skills to role play different matchday scenarios.

PE

In PE we have been learning some of basics of tennis, looking at hand-eye coordination, using a variety of movements, forehand shots, backhand and target practise. We’ve played games with partners, in groups and set ourselves our own individual targets to help us up-skill each lesson.

RE

We were lucky this week to attend Mass at St. Thomas’ in Muirkirk to observe Ascension Thursday. P3/4 were excited for the day and sang some of songs we’ve learned in class this year, for the entire bus journey, there and back! They participated excellently in the Mass and enjoyed snacks and juice with Father Phillip in the church hall after.

Dumfries House Visit Festival of Farming

Our P4s had a brilliant day at Dumfries House learning all about the importance of farming and increasing our knowledge of where our food comes from and the agricultural processes involved in our everyday lives. We took part in a lambing auction, learned of the importance of bees and tried local honey. We learned about dairy and beef cows and discovered that we have more than a few future butchers in our class! We compared our own tongues to cow tongues, tried on some butchery equipment and learned about poultry and egg farming. All of our P4s showed genuine enthusiasm and curiosity for each of the activities, it was a fantastic day and they were a credit to our school. Have a look at some of the highlights of our day!

STEM Day

While our P4s were on their Dumfries House visit our P3s enjoyed a STEM day of shared learning with our P5s – they used Spheros to create and navigate tracks and mazes, Scratch coding and Microbits in lots of fun learning activities. See our P4/5 class blog to find out more!
