Primary 5/6 Snapshot Week 29.4.24 – 3.5.24

Our current focus in Numeracy is Fractions, Decimals and Percentages.  This week, we were learning how to find equivalent fractions, starting with using the maths manipulatives to show equivalent fractions, then moving on to picture representations and finally using our knowledge of times tables facts to help calculate equivalent fractions.  Some groups have also started using division facts to calculate the simplest form of a fraction!  I have been blown away with how confident pupils are with using their knowledge of multiplication and division facts!

Our fraction knowledge has tied in nicely with our focus on Time.  Pupils have been working hard on telling the time using analogue and digital clocks.  We will continue to focus on converting time from analogue to digital and have started looking at 24-hour time!

In Reading, we have been enjoying our class novel ‘Thumble Tumble and the Ollpheist’.  We completed a True/ False/ Can’t Tell activity to demonstrate our understanding of the novel and used evidence from the text to justify our thinking.  We used a Word Investigation Board to explore strategies we can use when coming across new vocabulary.

In Writing, we were continuing with our procedure text of ‘How to use Micro:bits’.  When we were writing these instructions, we were thinking about how other pupils would read them and then be able to use the Micro:bits!

In Spelling, we were surprised by how many representations the ‘s’ phoneme has.  When investigating this phoneme we found some words that have the ‘s’ phoneme with 3 different representations!

In IDL we have been looking at Forces and Friction.  We explored our classroom with magnets in order to find materials that were magnetic.  We used the magnets to show a ‘push’ force and a ‘pull’ force.  We also completed an experiment using cars and ramps with different materials in order to investigate the impact of friction on the speed of an object.

In PE we enjoyed one rugby session and one tennis session this week.  We are becoming more confident with aiming where we want the tennis ball to go!

We loved welcoming you into our classroom and sharing our learning during the Open Afternoon.  Enjoy looking through our work in the Snapshot Jotters!

Mrs Sinclair visits Primary 5/6

Mrs Sinclair had a fantastic morning in Primary 5/6!

On Monday morning I visited Primary 5/6 to join in with the teaching and learning.  It was wonderful to see Numeracy in action.

The pupils shared their knowledge and understanding of different Multiplication strategies to solve calculations.

I was very impressed to see pupils using Brackets, Grid method and Standard Algorithm to solve tricky calculations.

The pupils worked with Numeracy partners and discussed the best method to solve calculations.  The pupils were very keen to show me their Posters of Understanding.  These fabulous Posters allow  pupils to show calculations using different strategies and to show their thinking.

I had a wonderful morning in Primary 5/6!  I was delighted to see confident individuals sharing the learning and working together.  Amazing work Primary 5/6!

Well done and thank you to Miss Quinn and Primary 5/6.

Snapshot Week 27.11.23 – 1.12.23

In Numeracy, we have been exploring using rounding to estimate the answer to calculations.  This has allowed us to build on our knowledge of rounding.   You can find examples of this in our snapshot jotters.

Our phoneme focus this week has been the ‘ow’ phoneme.  In handwriting, we focus on our spelling words.  Take a look at the page from our handwriting jotter and see how we diacritically mark words (ask us at home how we do this and what the different symbols mean).

In reading this week we finished our class novel of This Morning I Met a Whale.  We completed a word investigation board where we identified new words and explored different strategies we can use when we come across a word we don’t know.  We then used a dictionary to find the correct meaning.

We also started writing a response text/ review to our class novel This Morning I Met a Whale.  We started writing the first two paragraphs.  Paragraph one informs our reader of what we are responding to and paragraph two describes what takes place in the story.

In PE we continued to focus on our hockey skills and used these skills in team games.

In RE we prayed the novena to St Andrew and on Friday we wrote our Advent thoughts that we put into our Advent calendar.

We hope you enjoy finding out more about our learning in our snapshot jotters.
