Curricular

PERFORMING

It is recommended that pupils should practice their instruments at least 4 times a week, for at least 15 minutes each time.  It has been proven that regular, short sessions of practice are much more beneficial than fewer, longer sessions.

Pupils who are following a Music course in the BGE or the SP have time allocated in class each week for which to practice.  If a pupil has access to an instrument at home on which they can practice, they are strongly encouraged to do so.

Alternatively, pupils can attend the extra curricular Skills Clubs at lunchtimes within the Music Department.  Pupils following a Music course in the SP can arrange with their teacher to carry out extra practice during any lunchtime or after school.

Resources to assist with practice both in class and at home are available for select instruments on the Music Department website:

COMPOSING

In the BGE, pupils experience composing in various different styles and genres, both individually and in groups.

In the SP, pupils select one style that they are comfortable and confident with to compose a piece of music for their assignment.

We use cloud based tools to assist with this, allowing pupils to compose in class and to continue their work at home.

LISTENING

Pupils following a Music course in either the BGE or the SP have banks of musical concepts to learn.  These concepts cover various styles and genres of music, as well the basic building blocks of music, including melody, harmony, rhythm, structure and timbre.

We use the following website as a revision tool both in class and at home, which demonstrates each concept with written descriptions and audio examples.
