Welcome to the Modern Languages Department!
At Stewarton Academy the Modern Languages Department enthusiastically encourages all pupils to engage in language learning and to make it a very positive experience.
Through the skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing, we aim to enhance students’ ability to communicate with others in a foreign language, to enable them to express with confidence their thoughts, feelings and ideas, and to arm them with the knowledge of how language works. We foster cultural awareness and assist students to view themselves as part of wider European and global communities. We also highlight to students the importance of language skills in the world of work nowadays.
In the General Broad Education (S1 to S3), French is taught to ensure continuity and progression in learning from primary to secondary school. Pupils study French in S1 and S2 and will have the opportunity to visit Ardeche in France for a week. In S1 and S2, the month of June is dedicated to discovering Spanish and Spanish culture. At the end of S2, pupils can choose both French and spanish.
In the Senior Phase, the Modern languages Department is extremely successful and offers National 4, National 5, Higher, Advanced Higher and the Language Baccalaureate which has been designed to provide a challenging and rewarding experience for candidates in S6.
