Code Name Verity by Elizabeth Wein

Two young women become unlikely best friends during WWII, until one is captured by the Gestapo. Only in wartime could a stalwart lass from Manchester rub shoulders with a Scottish aristocrat, one a pilot, the other a special operations executive. Yet whenever their paths cross, they complement each other perfectly and before long become devoted to each other.
But then a vital mission goes wrong, and one of the friends has to bail out of a faulty plane over France. She is captured by the Gestapo and becomes a prisoner of war. The story begins in “Verity’s” own words, as she writes her account for her captors.
Truth or lies? Honour or betrayal? Everything they’ve ever believed in is put to the test…

It is a very good book but it takes too long and is a bit confusing sometimes and takes a while to get into it. But it is a very interesting book. S (S2) ***

The sense of an ending by Julian Barnes

Tony Webster and his clique first met Adrian Finn at school. They would navigate the girl-less sixth form together, trading in affectations, in-jokes, rumour and wit. They all swore to stay friends for life. Now Tony is in middle age and he is finding that memory is imperfect.

A little disappointing – meanders along. Ending not entirely clear on first reading.  May suit S6 pupils and staff.   Mrs B (Staff) ***

Tommy Sullivan is a Freak by Meg Cabot

Katie Ellison can’t believe it. Just when she’s having the best summer of her life, Tommy Sullivan arrives back in town. Just about everyone hates Tommy for what he did four years ago, and even being seen with him would make Katie a social pariah. So falling in love with him would be the kiss of death. And that’s just what happens.

The book was OK but I didn’t enjoy it that much because I didn’t get what was going on. D.P. (S2) ***
