Miss Janice McGill – Contact
LOAN LIMITS
Pupils may borrow one book at a time from the fiction or non-fiction shelves for two weeks. Audio books on CD are counted as normal books. A small collection of DVDs is also available for loan: each pupil can borrow one DVD at a time for two weeks. A Click and Collect service is available and requests can be made through a Glow Form.
Loans may be renewed as long as there is not a waiting list for the resource. Pupils can check whether they have an overdue loan by contacting Miss McGill. Books may be returned to the School Reception or Office if the Library is closed.
Budget levels have been reduced in recent years, making it difficult to replace resources. A replacement charge will therefore be payable for items that lost or damaged beyond repair.
RESOURCES
Books
The Library currently has approximately 10,000 titles in stock, including fiction and non-fiction books for use in class work and reading for pleasure. The catalogue can be searched in school by following a link on the school’s Public server. Pupils can reserve popular titles to ensure they have a chance to read them. Any suggestions on which books to buy in the future are always welcomed and pupils’ comments on books they have read are available to read on the Library Comments and Reviews page.
Fiction Section
A wide range of fiction books is available in this section which is arranged in alphabetical order by the author’s last name. Some books in the main General Fiction section are also marked with stickers to show the genre of the story they contain. Separate shelves are set out for Quick Reads, Junior Poetry, Audiobooks and Graphic Novels & Manga. A small Teenage Fiction section is also available for pupils in S2 to S6 to borrow. Books in the Young Adult section are aimed at readers in S3 to S6.
Senior Fiction Section
This section contains books mostly suitable for pupils from S4 to S6 only. All of the senior fiction books can be identified by a green label on the spine. Books that contain short stories also have a red S on the spine. Senior fiction books are arranged alphabetically by the author’s surname.
Audiobooks
A small collection of books on CD and MP3, including some book and audio packs, is also available for loan to anyone who prefers to listen while they read (each pack counts as one book).
Non-Fiction Section
Books containing facts and information on many subjects are included in this section. They are arranged in number order from 001 to 999. A Subject Index is available which lists the numbers for each subject in alphabetical order and signs are fixed to each set of shelves to show which numbers are on the books in that area. Pupils can also search the library catalogue for non-fiction books using the school computers.
Reference Library
This contains general dictionaries and encyclopaedias as well as some useful items on particular subjects. All resources in the Reference Section are for use in school only.
Contemporary Issues
A collection of books, resource packs and leaflets are provided for pupils and staff investigating current social issues. These are located next to the counter.
Local History Collection
A small range of resources is available to support investigative work on local history. These materials can be used only in school due to the nature of the material and the limited amount available. Material related to Scottish and local history can be identified by a thistle theme sticker placed on the spine of the book. Online local history resources have also been saved into a Useful Websites folder on the school server.
ICT Resources
The Library has a suite of twenty PCs and a set of 30 ‘class in a box’ laptops, which can be used for word processing, Internet and access to a number of subject-specific programs which are useful sources of information. Printing and scanning facilities are available and school staff can connect to an active panel for presentation work. S6 pupils can use the laptops or PCs for work during study periods, provided the machines are not needed for classes. All currently run Windows 10 with Office 2016.
Details of a number of helpful websites, articles and apps can be searched in the Library Catalogue.
