Weekly round up 1/3/19

It’s been another busy week for us! We started off by introducing ‘Active Spelling’, our new spelling approach. It has been a hit so far with the class. New spelling homework activity grids were sent home in order to encourage learning in a range of ways. I apologise for the messy options…all in the name of learning! We also focused on persuasive writing within literacy.

We spent some time watching video clips from the series ‘Blue Planet’ to help us with our topic research. I can’t wait to hear all about your projects during your solo talks on Tuesday!

We also began to look at volume in maths  and enjoyed using concrete materials to work out the volume and surface area of a range of shapes.

In health and wellbeing, we discussed online safety and how to determine if the content we are seeing is age appropriate. Everyone approached the subject with great maturity, which led to a fantastic discussion taking place.

Charley and Kodi used their well-earned privilege cards to lead a lesson on cavemen for 15 minutes. We all enjoyed learning a cave man dance!

On Friday afternoon we chose to have choosing time outside with Primary 5. We played football together and enjoyed being creative with the scrap resources.

We all wish Charley a happy birthday for Sunday as she turns 12!

Achievement this week:

#HotChocFriday attendee – Maia accompanied by Ona

Group of the week – Gucci Cookies

Star of the week – Robbi for excellence in his persuasive writing.

Well done everyone! Have a lovely weekend,

Mrs Brown

Weekly round up 22/2/19

What a week it has been! We have had so much fun that at times we didn’t even realise we were working.

In P.E we started our large apparatus block of gymnastics. There were some fantastic skills on display and I look forward to seeing what next week brings.

We also enjoyed putting our measure skills to the test in our real world context maths challenge. Learners had to work out how much carpet would be required in each room in the house (area) and then use their knowledge of money to work out if the total cost was within the given budget. The extension task then allowed learners to purchase furniture for the house, again sticking to a budget and their given area. It was so much fun that they want to do it again!

On Friday we celebrated ‘Purple Friday’ as part of LGBT History month. We had a great discussion in class about the LGBT community and why we celebrate this event. Everyone looked fantastic in their multi-coloured clothes.

This week we saw some fantastic achievements. We won the Golden Carrot – well done to everyone who brought a healthy snack to contribute to our total.

Star of the week – Ona for consistently good effort and lovely manners.

Group of the week – Gucci cookies (Kodi, Charley, Dylan & Robbi)

HotChocFri attendee – Jacob who chose Robbi to accompany him.

Wishing you all a lovely weekend,

Mrs Brown

Create a Bitmoji!

Our learners in P6/7 will be redesigning their classroom and have chosen to use Bitmojis to do this. A Bitmoji is a cartoon icon of yourself which can be customised to look like you. Pupils are being asked to create their Bitmoji at home by installing the app from the app store and creating an account. Many of our learners already have a Bitmoji which they can send.

It is possible to make a Bitmoji without having a social media account. With an adult’s support, learners can submit an email address to create an account. Once each pupil has created their Bitmoji I ask that they choose their favourite one which shows their personality and share it with me. This can be done by clicking and holding the selected image and choosing to share via email. Bitmojis should be sent to ealauren.brown@glow.sch.uk. Please feel free to delete the account once the image has been sent if it is something you do not wish your child to remain on, however I am confident that there are no dangers within this app as there are no additional features.

Hello from Mrs Brown

Dear Parent/carer,

I am delighted to be taking P6/7 through the final stages of the school year. I know that the pupils were very fond of Mrs Martin and she will be missed. I will be spending lots of time getting to know the pupils and making some small changes to the classroom environment. I am also keen to get to know the important adults in the children’s lives and hope to meet you soon.

I am here to support you and your child to the best of my ability, and to ensure we put your child’s wellbeing first. I am happy to discuss any queries or concerns you may have over the phone or in person by making an appointment at the school office. Please don’t hesitate to be in touch.

I operate a flexible homework approach which I will trial with the pupils. This will involve set tasks each week from literacy, numeracy and a contextual piece related to our learning in class. These will not always be written tasks, therefore on some occasions learners may not be required to hand homework in. Homework will be set on a Monday to be returned on a Friday, where we will have a follow-up discussion about the week’s tasks.

Our P.E days will continue to be a Wednesday and Friday, where I ask that earrings are removed, and long hair is tied back if possible. Homework diaries will also note important events in the week.

I look forward to the coming months and will ensure that your children continue to enjoy their learning.

Burns House Museum Trip

Our trip to Burns House Museum in Mauchline today was really enjoyable. We took part in two workshops in the morning session. One workshop was a museum tour where we dressed up in clothes of Burns’ era and the other was a drama and music workshop where we performed the story of Tam O’Shanter. Mrs Martin was very proud of the knowledge P6/7 were able to so confidently share about Tam O’Shanter and was delighted to see how much everyone in the class had remembered from their learning over the past two weeks. In the afternoon session, we took part in an art workshop which culminated in everyone putting on a shadow puppet theatre production. What a brilliant day!

Numeracy and Maths – Topmarks

In class, as part of our mental maths, we have been using the ‘Daily Ten’ on the Topmarks website. Even if they don’t admit it to you at home, everyone has really been enjoying the timed challenges. I have told the class that they can access this website at home from a number of devices any time they wish. It’s good fun and really does help improve mental agility! Follow the link below:
