Week ending 21.03.25

We have been learning to join our letters in handwriting. We have been using Metalinguistics to help us understand our novel study. We began writing our resolutions and conclusions to our stories. We have continued to develop our knowledge of equivalent fractions and improper fractions in maths.

On Tuesday we went down to the nursery for our Teddy Bears Picnic.  This week we have also participated in Earth Hour, we designed posters to promote our in-school Earth Hour which took place today. While we Powered Down for Earth Hour this afternoon, we practiced for Euroquiz which is next Thursday!

A huge well done goes to Alfie who was titled the ‘Climate Change Champion’ on Wednesday night!

Our Week

We began to use tissue to create spring butterflies in Art. We are scrunching up the tissue paper and gluing it on to create texture.

We practiced for Euroquiz alongside a previous years recording. We worked in pairs to create a whole class timeline about events in Europe’s history.

We continued to work on our handwriting with Mrs Cook. We worked on task maps for our novel study ‘Holes’. Today, we continued our narrative writing by adding a problem into our stories which we will resolve next week.

In maths we learned about improper fractions and we completed a stations lesson which had various activities to help us learn how to convert improper fractions to mixed numbers.

We also played a hockey tournament in PE with Mrs Cook.

Our Cool Week in Class

This week was World Book Day. On Thursday we designed our own front covers for books, we played ‘Who Am I?’ with book characters, completed a character quiz, we did an alphabet challenge for our novel study ‘Holes’, and wrote book reviews for our favourite books.

In PE with Mrs Cook we played some Hockey games. We also had our final Leadership session until after Easter, during this we had a chance to lead different sport stations to our groups.  We continued to work on our Handwriting with Mrs Cook which we are loving doing. We have continued to work on our Task-maps and engaged in some really interesting discussions about the themes within our book.  We also continued to work on our fractions with Miss Higgins and kilograms and grams with Mrs Cook. Finally, we made some Spring themed art.

Our Week

This week we have read more of our novel study, Holes by Louis Sachar, and we cannot wait to find out what will happen next! We also completed our introductions for our stories for our Buddies. We have continued to explore fractions of a quantity using a variety of methods.  We began to explore buoyancy in science and planned experiments which we will conduct next week. And we took inspiration from our emotions to create pieces of art work. We had our second Leadership session with Barry today which everyone loved.

A Week in P6

This week we have learned how to find a fraction of an amount using our division strategies. In literacy we have continued to work on our novel study, Holes. We completed tasks based on chapters 17-21, exploring themes such as friendship and blame. Today, we began writing out stories for our buddies. We cannot wait to keep working on these.

We worked in pairs/indivually to create entries for our Pocket Garden competition which are based on the themes of ‘Our Heritage’, ‘One Planet Picnic’, and ‘Wildlife Gardening’.

We also began researching each country in Europe. We found out their capital cities, populations, currency, and facts about them. Today we also began our Leadership sessions with Barry in PE. During these sessions we will learn how to lead games and activities for younger children. Finally, some of our pupils took part in the P7 slime making experience.

This Weeks News

We played our final session of Badminton. Next week we begin some leadership sessions in PE. We also continued to learn about Hockey with Mrs Cook.

We have continued to work on fractions using division to simplify them. In Literacy we practiced our handwriting and we created plans for a story which we will write to read to our future Buddies.

We have continued to study Europe, we are learning the names of all of the countries and have done so through a song and labelling a map.

We advanced our structures in technology by creating a bridge to hold a dictionary using only paper, scissors and tape.

Our Week

This week in numeracy we have been using multiplication to find equivalent fractions and division to simplify fractions. In literacy we have continued to work on our novel study, and on Thursday we completed an inference question carousel in small groups. Pupils worked together to recall information from the book and, using their inference skills, formed answers to the questions asked.

In PE we began practicing rallying in badminton, we pushed ourselves to improve on each score. Pupils completed their presentations on their Famous Scots. The class also worked in small groups to create their structures for our technology lesson. Each group was to build a structure which would hold a dictionary for 10 seconds without support from pupils. Each group was successful in their building.

Our Week

This week in Literacy we created plans for a piece of narrative writing which we will begin next week. These plans were based on characters that pupils chose and had described.  We read some more of our class novel, Holes. We worked together as a class to find out how Stanley described The Warden. Using his descriptions we created a visualisation of The Warden.

We have continued to explore fractions, building our own fraction walls to help us gain a better idea of how fractions can be represented in bar models. We learned how to use bar models to help us order both fractions and decimal fractions.

We have been learning all about the months of the year and our birthdays in French. We have also continued to practice for our upcoming Euroquiz Heat. Pupils have worked in pairs to research Famous Scots and will share what they have found with the rest of the class next week.

20th – 24th January

This week, we have been learning how to simplify fractions and find their equivalent fractions. We have also continued to read our class novel, which has answered some of our questions about the story, such as “Why does Stanley’s grandfather have bad luck?” We are excited to continue reading.

We have started our new technology topic focused on ‘Craft, Design and Engineering’. Yesterday pupils worked in small groups to create a plan for a structure that must be able to hold a dictionary without support from pupils. Next week, we will use our plans to help us make these structures out of paper and tape.

We also continued our exploration of more of Steven Brown’s artwork, this week we focused on his use of patterns to create effect in his work. Pupils then chose a pattern to use within their interpretations.

Pupils have also worked in pairs to research various other Famous Scots and create a slide all about them. These will be shared with the rest of the class next week. This links to our whole school study of Scotland. We also participated in our Scots Verse Challenge. Our chosen finalists are Andrew, Brody, Leighton, Myia, and Poppy. The winner will be announced on Monday.

Last Week in P6

Last week we began our new PE topics – Badminton with Miss Higgins and Hockey with Mrs Cook.

We continued to explore Fractions in maths through the use of station activities. Our activities included making fraction pizzas, using beads to help us visualise our fractions, building fractions, finding equivalent fractions, and simplifying fractions.

We read some more of our novel – Holes by Louis Sachar. We used this as inspiration when beginning our narrative writing as we looked at the character descriptions to help describe our own characters for the story we will be writing.

We are currently exploring famous Scots as a topic and we began this by looking at the work of Steven Brown for our art lessons. We made notes on the techniques used by Steven Brown in his ‘McCoo’ paintings and created our own versions.

Finally, we continued to practice our poem for the Scots Verse and have done some practice for our Euroquiz.
