Our Week In P6

This week marks the start of Term 3 in which we will be exploring many different topics.

To start our week we have began our new class novel study – Holes by Louis Sachar.  We will also be learning about narrative writing.

We began to explore fractions within numeracy and have learned about fractions in relation to decimals.

During our art lesson we explored the use of different media to create a picture, pupils used a mix of coloured pencils, pens, oil pastels and crayons to do so.

In PE we participated in a range of team games, including Capture the Flag, and Rats and Rabbits.

There are some very exciting things happening for P6 this term. Firstly, we will begin our whole-school topic of Scotland. During this term we will be learning a Scots Verse, pupils will be chosen to perform their verse. The verse we will be learning is ‘Up in the Morning Early’ by Robert Burns . All pupils have been given a copy of this poem to help them practice.

Secondly, P6 will also be competing in Euroquiz 2025. This is a competition held across Scotland in which Primary 6 pupils compete against each other in a quiz about Europe. The questions relate to geography, languages, history and culture. We will be exploring Euroquiz as a class and will study Europe as a topic later in the term.  Euroquiz have a website which contains many resources as well as previous questions from the heats and finals from 2018-2023. We will be exploring these as a class, however, if any pupil is interested in doing some extra exploring, the resources can be found at this link: https://scilt.org.uk/Primary/Celebratinglanguages/Euroquiz/tabid/8651/Default.aspx

Reminders:

  • Our PE days are a Wednesday and Friday, please ensure pupils attend school on these days with appropriate kit.
  • Our Term 3 homework focus will begin later in the term, all homework jotters should be handed back in as soon as possible so they can be checked before our new homework comes out.

Homework – Week 4

This is the final week of our Term 2 homework block.  This week our focus is writing. For the homework, pupils should take time to complete a free write. This means that pupils can choose to write about anything they wish. This task should be completed in homework jotters.

All homework should be handed in by Friday.

Shoot to Saturn

This year Catrine Primary school have joined the Shoot to Saturn mission. This means we are completing active travel journeys in order to collect s-miles to power our rockets with enough energy to make it to Saturn.  Active Travel Journeys include walking, park and strides and using a bike or scooter to get from one place to another.

Primary 6 are this years active travel commanders. This means that we communicate with Mission Control to ensure we are on track with our journey. As active travel commanders, P6 set all pupils the challenge of designing their own rocket for our mission. Classes then exchanged rockets and voted on which rocket would represent each class.

Our winners were chosen today:

P1 – Miller

p2 – Ella

P3 – Lyle

P4 – Logan

P5 – Casey

P6 – Poppy

P7 – Jacob

We cannot wait to continue this journey!

Our Week in P6

We have had a very busy and exciting week in P6.

During numeracy this week, P6 have been learning how to multiply and divide by 10, 100 and 1000. We have also been learning about fact families for multiplication and division.

In literacy, we completed our reports on the weather, these included different types of weather, what people should wear and what people can do for these different weather types.  We have also been working hard on our Climate Change and Bug Club novel studies.

We have also started to learn about Space, we will continue to explore this further next week

On Thursday, we had another visit from Cumnock Rugby Club who ran a fun and exciting session. We played different rugby themed games which allowed us to practice our passing, tackling and scoring skills.

Today, we created our lanterns for Make Catrine Sparkle. We also participated in Be Bright Be Seen by wearing bright colours.

Last week our focus was beginning our Big Talks. Although pupils will receive a short amount of time in class to work on these, pupils should continue these at home. Our topic for the Big Talk is ‘All About Me’. Pupils should aim to talk for around 5 minutes and can use a PowerPoint, photos or a poster to help them do so. Our presentations will be next week and are ordered as follows:

Our Week – P6

This week we have been very busy with our Show practice. We have been practicing all of the songs and doing runs of the script with P5 and P7.

In numeracy, we have been learning to use different strategies to add and subtract up to four-digit numbers. These strategies include partitioning, formal method, counting on/back, rounding and using number lines.

We continued writing our reports on the weather for our writing. We also began new book studies and Bug Club to develop our reading comprehension.

Today we finished our sessions of Basketball which ended very successfully.

Our Week in P6

This week has been very exciting for P6!

During our Numeracy lessons, we have begun to explore our times tables through our Multiplication Masters programme. Pupils have also been learning to partition numbers when adding and subtracting, how to add four digit numbers both with and without exchanging, and exploring that we can make the same number using many ways. We have also challenged ourselves with some problem solving questions.

We have continued to use our comprehension strategies to help us understand our novel, The BFG. On Thursday we finished reading our novel and everyone enjoyed it. We also created Hallowe’en free writing comic strips to celebrate. We began to explore Reports by exploring their features, this will allow us to create our own reports next week. Pupils have also participated in daily ERIC time, this is where everyone in class reads a book of their choice for a period of time.

During PE we have begun playing full games of Basketball which we will continue next week.

We have also had lots of time to begin our school show. We have been practising lines and songs and have been working together to create props and settings for our show.

Primary 6 have also enjoyed becoming our schools Active Travel Commanders for our Shoot To Saturn initiative for the year. P7 also joined our class to help us research Renewable energy sources and their impact for Scotland.

Finally, P6 joined with P5 and P7 to have a Hallowe’en party.

A Busy Week In P6

This week, P6 had a visit from Cumnock Rugby Club for one of our PE sessions.

In numeracy we have been learning all about decimal points and when we use them, in addition to continuing our learning of place value.

We continued to read the BFG and have also developed our descriptive writing through describing characters and settings, next week we will build on this work and create a story.

We have also went outside most days to check on our rain gauges. These allow us to measure how much rainfall we get so we can compare this to the rainforest.

In ICT we have been using Scratch to explore coding. Pupils got to choose their own characters and settings and bring them to life through creating different sequences.

P6 Homework

This terms homework focus is the times tables.

Pupils have been given a new homework jotter. For this term, pupils have received a times table homework grid which is glued into their jotters. Each week, pupils should choose a times table to focus on and practise using one or more of the methods on the grid.

Pupils have also been given a sheet with each of the times tables on it. This has not been glued in as it can be used to ask pupils the questions and check the answers.

This homework is not expected to be handed in until the 11th of October, however, if pupils wish for their work to be checked they can bring it in.

By the end of P6 pupils are expected to know and be able to recall up to the 12 times tables. We will be working towards this goal throughout the year.

Cool Kids in P6

This week we learned all about accumulation, evaporation, condensation and precipitation in relation to the water cycle. We completed a science experiment in which we created our own water cycles in bags. We also came up with ideas on how we can measure rainfall, these will be further explored next week.

During PE we have been learning how to skip with Mrs Cook and to play basketball with Miss Higgins.

For ICT we began creating ‘all about me’ Power Points to practice our skills.

We continued learning about descriptive writing and wrote some short descriptive stories. We also read some more of our class novel, The BFG.

On Thursday, we welcomed our families into our classroom for our Numeracy Open Morning. During this time we played addition 4-in-a-row, multiplication bingo, practiced our multiplication on Top Marks, and we used dice to create the biggest number we could to help us learn more about place value.

We also completed some meditations as a whole class to encourage mindfulness.
