A Busy Week In P6

This week, P6 had a visit from Cumnock Rugby Club for one of our PE sessions.

In numeracy we have been learning all about decimal points and when we use them, in addition to continuing our learning of place value.

We continued to read the BFG and have also developed our descriptive writing through describing characters and settings, next week we will build on this work and create a story.

We have also went outside most days to check on our rain gauges. These allow us to measure how much rainfall we get so we can compare this to the rainforest.

In ICT we have been using Scratch to explore coding. Pupils got to choose their own characters and settings and bring them to life through creating different sequences.

P6 Homework

This terms homework focus is the times tables.

Pupils have been given a new homework jotter. For this term, pupils have received a times table homework grid which is glued into their jotters. Each week, pupils should choose a times table to focus on and practise using one or more of the methods on the grid.

Pupils have also been given a sheet with each of the times tables on it. This has not been glued in as it can be used to ask pupils the questions and check the answers.

This homework is not expected to be handed in until the 11th of October, however, if pupils wish for their work to be checked they can bring it in.

By the end of P6 pupils are expected to know and be able to recall up to the 12 times tables. We will be working towards this goal throughout the year.

Cool Kids in P6

This week we learned all about accumulation, evaporation, condensation and precipitation in relation to the water cycle. We completed a science experiment in which we created our own water cycles in bags. We also came up with ideas on how we can measure rainfall, these will be further explored next week.

During PE we have been learning how to skip with Mrs Cook and to play basketball with Miss Higgins.

For ICT we began creating ‘all about me’ Power Points to practice our skills.

We continued learning about descriptive writing and wrote some short descriptive stories. We also read some more of our class novel, The BFG.

On Thursday, we welcomed our families into our classroom for our Numeracy Open Morning. During this time we played addition 4-in-a-row, multiplication bingo, practiced our multiplication on Top Marks, and we used dice to create the biggest number we could to help us learn more about place value.

We also completed some meditations as a whole class to encourage mindfulness.

Our week in P6

This week we continued exploring our new topic – The Rainforest. We learned all about why most rainforests are located on the equator, and about the layers of the rainforest.

We have also been learning more about place value and rounding. Today we drew place value grids onto our desks and the pupils drew counters in the boxes to create three and four digit numbers.

For literacy, we completed a description writing relay. Pupils were given a card with an item on it which they had to describe and were racing to complete as many descriptions as possible.

In PE pupils made use of the parachute and different games were played.

The class have also been learning about music and have had experience using the glockenspiels and clapping along with the beat of different songs.

Just a quick reminder that our PE days are on a Wednesday and Friday. Please ensure that appropriate kit and a change of shoes are brought to school.
