The P5/6 pupils have been focusing on the ‘ee’ phoneme this week. They can confidently identify all phoneme representations for ‘ee’ and can use various active strategies to practise their spelling words.

Also, the pupils are continuing to use various writing techniques to create effective descriptive writing pieces. They can now include adjectives, adverbs, similes and metaphors to add more detail to their writing.

Maths

The pupils in P5/6 have been learning to use a new Number Talks strategy called ‘partitioning’ this week. The pupils have been able to use this strategy to add 5-digit numbers, 6-digit numbers and decimal numbers.

Additionally, the pupils have been engaging in several practical activities this week whilst learning how to compare and order decimals.

Other Curricular Areas

The pupils enjoyed using their knowledge of Viking artwork and patterns to create some amazing Viking jewellery pieces this week!

As well as this, the pupils took part in their first strings lesson on Thursday. All pupils will experience learning to play a classical instrument such as violins, violas and cellos throughout this session.

Maths Week Scotland

All pupils in P5/6 have enjoyed celebrating Maths Week Scotland.

Throughout the week, the pupils have engaged in practical activities to expand their knowledge of place value. They have compared whole numbers to 1 million, as well as decimals to 3 decimal places. Additionally, the pupils have continued to develop their knowledge of decimals by learning how to convert decimal notation into fractional notation. The pupils were then able to showcase their learning during our first ‘Maths Open Morning’.

The pupils also took their knowledge of maths into their P.E lesson this week as they linked their reaction time to their knowledge of times tables.

P5/6 have had a blast settling into their new class this week.

The pupils have enjoyed spending lots of time getting to know each other and learning to work together as part of a team.

Throughout this week, the pupils discussed their rights using the UNCRC articles and selected several important rights to create a class charter. This will ensure that all pupils and staff are treated fairly and respectfully within the classroom.

The pupils have also enjoyed exploring measure in maths. This week, the pupils designed a building out of Lego and calculated the area using the correct formula.

Safe to say we have a very creative bunch in P5/6!
