Week 11!

This week we have been looking at the nets of 3D shapes. We had a go a trying to make our own cubes, cuboids, cylinders and cones. Take a look at them below.

This week for spelling we have been focussing on the ‘f’ sound and its different representations. We completed a spelling chart showing the three different representations, wrote sentences including some of our ‘f’ words, made some colourful word art and also done some diacritical marking.

This was the 3rd and final week of rugby with Blair for P4/5. Everyone has really enjoyed getting to learn a bit more about rugby and having a go at trying the different skills involved. Take a look at some of the action shots below.

Week 10!

This week when the Primary 5 pupils were away swimming the Primary 4 pupils got the chance to get arty. We looked at the Northern Lights and followed a step by step guide on how to create a snowy landscape picture using chalk. Take a look at some of the beautiful drawings below.

We have started our new IDL topic which looks at significant people from the past. This week we focussed on Albert Einstein and his personal life. Everyone worked in pairs to complete a reading comprehension task as well as a timeline activity. Jamie also drew us an amazing picture of Albert Einstein for our wall display, well done Jamie!

We also had our second visit from Blair, the rugby coach. The children enjoyed getting another chance to take part in game-like activities and enjoyed getting the chance to work as a team. They are looking forward to their last session next week.

Have a lovely weekend!

Rugby Session – 1

P4/5 have had a very busy week! In addition to World Book Day on Thursday, we also had a visit from a rugby coach, Blair, who took the children for their first rugby session.  We got to practise holding, passing and catching a rugby ball and also took part in game-like activities. Have a look at some of the action shots below.

We also continued with our gymnastics and this week we focussed on flying/jumping. Everyone had the opportunity to practise a range of jumps off of equipment as well as practise their jumps on the mats on the ground. Take a look at some of the amazing gymnasts in the class.

Gymnastics, swimming and rugby all in one week, wow!

Have a lovely weekend everyone.

Week 8!

This week for mental maths we have been revisiting the ‘Empty Number Lines’ strategy using addition. This is a strategy that allows children to break up numbers any way that makes sense to them and so everyone’s working can look different. Take a look at some of our work below.

For spelling we completed a range of tasks based on the phoneme we were focussing on. We completed some word-searches, practised our elkonin boxes and also done some pyramid writing.

We have continued with our new topic of gymnastics  in P.E and this week we focused on balancing. On Monday we practised a variety of different balances and then on Thursday we had a go at combining travelling and balancing together. Take a look at some of the action shots below.

Have a lovely weekend everyone!

Week 7!

This week Primary 4/5 were learning how to use the ‘Adjusting for Easier Numbers’ mental maths strategy. This strategy was a little harder to understand but everyone worked really hard and tried their best. Take a look at some of our work below. Well done everyone.

We are continuing to learn about shape in numeracy and we are still focusing on 2D shapes. We have had people identifying and counting 2D shapes whilst others have been learning about parallel, perpendicular and intersecting lines.

We have also moved onto a new topic in P.E and are beginning to learn about the skills and concepts we use in gymnastics. This week we focused on travelling and had some time to practise different methods of travelling on the mats. Take a look at some of the action shots!

Have a lovely weekend everyone!

Week 6 & Week 1 of Swimming

Although this week has been shorter than normal it has still been very busy. P4/5 were very excited to paint their Ben Nevis paper-mache mountains. Please take a look at their amazing work below. The Primary 5 children were also very excited as this was their first week of swimming lessons which they went all the way to Cumnock for. Please enjoy this summary of the Primary 5’s visit to the swimming pool which was written by Alfie.

My Trip to The Swimming Pool With Primary 5

First we walked to the bus stop then we waited for our bus we got on put our seatbelts on and then stop in Auchinleck about 4 times and then stopped across the road to the Visions Cumnock. Then we got our swimming stuff on got a quick shower and then did a swimming test for group 1 and group 2. For the swim test we went to go the first one we did front crawl first and then back crawl going back and then the groups were chosen then we did a bit in group 2. We did a bit of front crawl with a board and then did back crawl and then we did front crawl without the board. Leighton told me that group 1 did practising breathing and then they did a couple of jumps. Then we got changed and went to the bus stop and waited for our bus Mrs Robertson went to the first bus but that was for Ayr. We were going to get the 50 bus to Kilmarnock that stopped in Catrine and then we got off the bus and walked back to the school. My honest review I would give it a 10/10 rating it was so good.

Well done Alfie and everyone else for their hard work this week. Have a lovely weekend!

Week 5!

We have continued our Scottish Landmarks topic by looking at Ben Nevis this week. On Wednesday we started making our paper-mache Ben Nevis mountains after finding out some interesting facts and having a really good class discussion about all things Ben Nevis. We are waiting for our mountains to dry before painting them next week. They are looking good so far!

This week we have been learning about the ‘make 10’ mental maths strategy. This strategy requires knowledge about number bonds to multiples of 10. Have a look at some of our work below.

We have also continued with our class novel and are making good progress with it. We focussed on chapters 4 and 5 this week and completed an inference activity on Danny’s dads feelings towards poaching.

We are still looking at 2D shapes and have focussed on tiling/tessellation. We made some predictions about which shapes would tile/tessellate and then we looked at some examples of tiling/tessellation in the real world. We also had a go ourselves.

I hope everyone enjoys their long weekend!

Week 4!

This week P4/5 have been learning how to subtract using partitioning.  This strategy really helps break up larger numbers into more manageable chunks and so can make tricky subtracting calculations much easier. Have a look at some of the examples below.

We have moved onto a new topic in numeracy and we are now looking at 2D and 3D shapes. Everyone made posters to show the 2D and 3D shapes they knew at the beginning of the week, and since then we have also looked at the properties/features of 2D shapes.

We have been continuing with our class novel, Danny the Champion of the World, and have completed a range of different activities related to the story. However, the children’s favourite activity was making their own kites just like Danny and his dad did in the novel. Take a look at some of our designs!

We have also continued with our Scottish Landmarks topic. This week we looked at The Kelpies. We completed a research activity all about The Kelpies and also created our own pieces of art.

Another busy week for P4/5!

Week 3!

This week our mental maths strategy was the grid method. This strategy helps us to solve harder multiplication calculations. Please have a look below at some of our amazing work using this strategy.

We continued looking at Edinburgh Castle for our Scottish Landmarks topic. We worked in pairs/small groups to complete a reading comprehension activity that told us all about Edinburgh Castle.  Everyone was really interested in the history of Edinburgh Castle and asked great questions during the lesson.

We also started our new Health and Wellbeing topic, Food and Health, and discussed what good table manners are and what they look like. We then worked in small groups to design posters to display in the classroom as a reminder.

Well done for all the hard work this week P4/5!

Week 2!

P4/5 have continued reading their new class novel, ‘Danny the Champion of the World’, and have completed a summarising activity as well as a main ideas activity on the first few chapters.  Everyone seems to be enjoying the story so far!

This week for mental maths we focussed on a new strategy which is called repeated addition. This strategy links multiplication to addition. Everyone done really well using this new way of thinking!

For numeracy we have been focussing on division; some groups using the formal written method, some groups using multiplication squares and others using concrete materials to help support them.

We have also spent some time learning our new poems and starting our new topic which is Scottish Landmarks. We have started looking at Edinburgh Castle and will continue with this next week.
