Primary 5 Blog Targets

Literacy

Reading

We will complete a reading modelling block on “There’s a Boy in the Girls’ Bathroom” by Lois Sachar. The children will use our reading strategies Prior Knowledge/Prediction, Metalinguistics, Visualisation, Inference, Main Idea and Summary to develop a deeper understanding of the content being read in class.

Writing

We will mainly focus on Report writing and Narrative (namely setting and characterisation). The children will develop their self -editing skills in line with the criteria at their own level.

Spelling

There will be 2 weeks focus on spelling then 2 weeks on phonics in rotation.

Grammar

We will continuously work on nouns, adjectives and verbs. This term, we will develop our use of connectives, pronouns, contractions and alliteration as well as sentence up levelling skills.

Talking and Listening

Later in the term, children will also be asked to prepare a short solo talk on a Viking God of their choice (a letter will be sent home with more information regarding this once we have covered this block of learning in class).

Numeracy

Numeracy will continue to involve a mixture of concrete, pictorial and written methods to reinforce learning and deepen understanding. We will continually revise and consolidate areas of prior learning as well as focusing on the following new areas of learning:

Place Value – Reading and writing whole numbers up to hundreds of thousands for some. Understanding that zero is a placeholder. Estimating and rounding to the nearest 10, 100 and 1,000. The children will use a place value grid to aid them in understanding multiplying and dividing by 10 and 100.

Multiplication & Division: 6 and 8 times tables covered and continued practice of all to develop speed and accuracy.

Addition & Subtraction: Different strategies to add and subtract up to 4 for some.

Angles, Symmetry & Transformation: Naming angles and knowing the measurements of a few basic angles e.g. right, straight lines, obtuse, acute and reflex. Describe and follow a route using appropriate vocabulary. Grid references.

‘Number Talks’ – pupils will continue to develop a range of mental maths strategies through Number Talks.

 

Health & Wellbeing

We will be reinforcing our School Values as well as continuing with our ‘Emotion Works’. They will also be thinking about friendships and relationships, the positive aspects and who to talk to if they are worried or upset. We will complete the P5 Internet Safety Lessons this term too.

P.E.

Gymnastics – focusing on balances, travel and sequences.

Miss McCrae – mini hockey skills and Fitness Programme.

In December, children will learn some Scottish Country Dances as well.

 

Social Studies

Our topic this term is Vikings. We will cover a range of curricular areas, including:

  • Major Viking events and how this has impacted on Scotland
  • Viking mythology and Gods
  • STEM challenges e.g. designing and creating helmets, longboats and Coding a Viking raid animation.

P5 have kickstarted their topic with a visit to Vikingar.

John Muir Award

P5 will be working towards their Discovery Award through a range of Outdoor Learning opportunities this year.
