Homework Week 2 – Spelling

Good Afternoon Everyone!

I hope you are all enjoying the lovely weather we have been having.

Pupils got a list of common words they have been practising to read and spell sent home with them yesterday.  Please get them to read the words  to you  and then practise writing them using some of the activities from the spelling menu below.  This can be completed on the back of the spelling menu sheet they have in their bags and returned on Monday 12th May.

Big Talk

Please remember to complete your Big Talk homework from last week (I’ve re-posted the info below).  If you need any paper or have any questions then please just let me know.

Email: kirsty.mair@eastayrshire.org.uk

This term the class has chosen to talk about ‘My Favourite Toy.’

Some ideas to include in their talk might be:

What is your favourite toy?

Who gave you it or where did you get it?

How do you play with it?

What do you like about it?

How does it make you feel when you play with it?

Any interesting facts about your favourite toy.

The talk should be ready to be presented the week beginning Monday 12th  May. More details will be given shortly (please check Blog) about which day that week your child will be giving their talk.

We look forward to hearing about their toy!

Weekly Round-up 02/05/25

Literacy

This week P2 were learning the u_e phoneme as in cube, tube, tune and rule.  They explored how magic e changes the sound of ‘u’ in different words.

We also started persuasive writing and tried to convince our adults at home to let us have sweets for breakfast!

Numeracy

In numeracy we continued to learn about fractions.  This week we were exploring how to find half of a quantity.  We also practised our doubles to help us link them to finding half.

Learning across the Curriculum:

It was another beautiful afternoon on Thursday so we went to the ball cage and played games with balls and hula hoops.  We also practised our races for sports day.

In PE we started gymnastics and learned how to do pencil, egg and teddy bear rolls.

Please remember to continue working on your Big Talk about ‘My Favourite Toy’ for week beginning 12th May.  Exact date will follow after the holidays.

Big Talk Homework

Twice a year, the children take part in our whole school ‘Big Talk Homework Challenge’.  This is where your child gets the opportunity to prepare and present a talk to the class.  The topic will change depending on the focus for that term.

Weekly Round-up 25/05/25

I hope everyone had a great Easter holiday and didn’t eat too much chocolate!

Literacy

This week P2 were learning the e_e phoneme as in these, here and even.  They explored how magic e changes the sound of ‘e’ in different words.

We practised our common words and for handwriting focussed on forming the letter k correctly.

The class also came up with ideas for their next ‘Big Talk’ topic.  They had a vote decide between my favourite place, toy or film.  My favourite toy won convincingly.

Numeracy

In numeracy we began learning about fractions.  We looked at how to half an object and discussed how a half is two equal pieces. As we are learning about halves we also revised our two times table, as it will be useful next week when we start to work on finding half of a quantity.

Learning across the Curriculum:

P2 enjoyed their walk on Thursday. It was a beautiful day and we went to the ball cage and played games with balls and hula hoops.

We also started our entries for the art competition at Catrine Show.  The theme is ‘on the farm’ and we drew pictures of tractors and trailers.

Weekly Round Up – 04/04/25

Hope you all have a lovely Easter Holiday!

Literacy

This week P2 were learning the a_e phoneme as in cake, bake and take.  They explored how magic e changes the sound of ‘a’ in different words. For our writing we wrote the middle of our stories , introducing a ‘problem’ for their characters to overcome.

Numeracy

For chance and uncertainty, we coloured our own probability jars to show the chance of choosing different coloured marbles. We also did more practise on our 2, 5 and 10 times table.

Learning across the Curriculum:

P2 had great fun decorating their eggs for the decorated egg competition.

Weekly Round Up – 28/03/25

Literacy

This week P2 were learning the o_e phoneme as in home, stone and phone.  They explored how magic e changes the sound of ‘o’ in different words.

In our writing we wrote the beginning of our stories using the three Billy Goats Gruff as inspiration.  The children had lots of fantastic ideas writing about three unicorns, three squirrels and three crocodiles, to name a few.

Numeracy

We finished off our work on rounding and estimating this week by estimating the position of numbers on a number line. For chance and uncertainty we gave examples of things that are likely to happen, not likely to happen and impossible to happen.  We also continued practising our times tables using Numicon to help us.

Learning across the Curriculum:

In art we took inspiration from Monet’s waterlilies painting and created our own bridges using tape, painting around them and leaving the print of our bridge when the tape was removed.

For PE we were outside this week and created our own obstacle course!

Weekly Round Up – 21/03/25

Literacy

This week we have been consolidating our spelling of ‘i_e’, ‘igh’ and ‘y’ words. We practised writing our common words, working with a partner and asking each other to spell different words.  We also created lollipop characters to retell the story of  the Billy Goats Gruff.

Numeracy

Following on from estimating we have been finding out about rounding numbers and have been practising rounding numbers to the nearest 10 with the help of a number line. P2 have also been learning about probability and discussing how likely something is to happen and being able to justifying their choices.

Learning across the Curriculum

Technologies (Craft Design and Engineering): P2 have been learning about bridges, the materials they are made from and how engineers design them to be strong.  They designed and built their own bridges then tested them to see how strong they were by finding out how many wooden blocks they could hold before they collapsed.

French: We have been learning different greetings and practising them with other pupils and in the morning during the class register.

As it was such lovely weather on Thursday we enjoyed a play at the park while we were out our walk.

Numeracy Homework – Week 3

Hi Everyone,

I have given the pupils a copy of a maths homework sheet and there is a copy below.  Please could it be returned by Friday 21st March?

This homework will give them a chance to practise their addition skills. We chose the tooth fairy as we have had so many wobbly teeth in class!

If your child would like an extra challenge you can change the amounts to include 50p and £1.

Thanks, Mrs Mair

WEEKLY ROUND UP – 14/03/25

Literacy

This week we continued to focus on the phoneme i_e  and practised  some diacritical marking to identify all the sounds in our spelling words.  P2 have also been focussing on reading and spelling their common words.

We have been reading and learning the Three Billy Goats Gruff story.  Please ask your child if they can retell you the story.  We will use this story as inspiration to help us in our writing next week by innovating and changing parts of the story to create our own new stories.

Numeracy

We have continued to develop our estimation skills and practise the 5 times table. P2 have also been consolidating what they have learned about addition and have been learning to complete missing number calculations.

Learning across the Curriculum

For technologies P2 have been learning about objects and materials. They went on a material hunt around the class to find objects that where made of different materials like wood, metal, fabric and cardboard.  They have also been finding out how to ask and tell people what their names are in French.
