Weekly Round-up 30/05/25

Literacy

This week P2 were learning the ow phoneme as in grow, crow and bowl.  They practised spelling different words with ‘ow’ and found ow words in a phoneme story.

In talking and listening this week they were expressing their opinion about the best character in the ‘Wizard of OZ’ after watching M&M productions perform it for them at school.  They all gave reasons why the character they picked was their favourite and they used this in their writing on Thursday.

Numeracy

This week they finished off their fractions unit in Maths.  They all had different sandwich orders to make using what they had learned about halves and quarters.  I’ll post  some pictures of the finished sandwiches next week.

Learning across the Curriculum:

In Health and Wellbeing P2 continued to learn about friendships and that it is important to think about how other people are feeling too. They created a poster about the different ways you can be kind to people.

In social subjects the learned about all the different ways land is used in and around Catrine. They generated a whole class list with their ideas before drawing and labelling some of them in their IDL jotter.

P2 have also really enjoyed using the Bionicles Lego during choosing time and have been busy creating lots of different characters.

The class were also very excited to have a special visitor to the class and meet Mrs Campbell’s baby.

Weekly Roundup – 23/05/25

Literacy

This week P2 were learning the ‘ue’ phoneme as in blue, true and glue.  They practised spelling different words with ‘ue’ in them using their rainbow boards and magnetic letters.  Pupils also started learning a new set of common words and used a game to practise them.

In talking and listening and writing this week they were expressing their opinion about which was best – ice cream or cake? They had lots of great reasons about why the one they preferred was best, here are some examples.

“I think cake is the best because it doesn’t give you brain freeze!”

“In my opinion cake is best because it doesn’t melt.”

“I think cake is best because it doesn’t fall off your cone and land on the floor.”

“I like ice cream because it cools you down on a hot day.”

Numeracy

This week P2 have been doing some revision of their adding skills.  They have also been sharing groups of objects into quarters.

Learning across the Curriculum:

P2 have been learning about features of their local environment.  They talked about the River Ayr and where it starts and finishes.  On Thursday they went for a walk along the river to look at all the things around about the river.  They found lots of different plants and insects, crops growing in the field and even found some tadpoles in the river.

In health and wellbeing they created a friendship tree. They each wrote what they thought makes a good friend on a leaf.

In PE they practised for sports day.

Spelling Homework

Primary 2 pupils have a spelling homework sheet home in their bags.

They have been learning the ‘ue’ phoneme this week and there is a wordsearch to help them practise spelling ‘ue’ words e.g. glue and blue. They also have a new list of common words to practise reading and writing.

Please can this be completed and returned on Monday.

Thanks

We have been doing more work on quarters this week, finding quarters on shapes and cutting shapes into quarters to make a classroom display.

Learning across the Curriculum:

In Health and Wellbeing this week P2 have been learning about friendships and what makes a good friend.  They  came up with all the ideas below.

Spelling Homework

P2 have a spelling homework sheet in their bags.

Their spelling words this week all contain the ‘ew’ sound

The boxes at the bottom of the sheet are elkonin boxes, only one sound can go in each box .

I’ve included an example to show you:

e and w are in one box because both letters are needed to make the one sound ‘ew’.
