Wk ending 20th March

Another busy week in Primary One! In literacy, we have finished learning all our initial sounds so we are spending the next few weeks consolidating these. We have been reading, making and writing cvc words.

We have also been continuing to learn how to write in sentences. This week we designed our egg for our Easter Egg Competition.

In numeracy, we have continued to investigate time. This week we have been exploring different ways to measure time. We had lots of fun working out how many things we could do in a minute, especially counting the many star jumps!

We have also been learning about estimation. We have been using lots of skills such as subitising and doubling to make good estimations.

“I can see an 5 and another 5, so I know it’s more than 10”

“I know it’s 12 because I can see 3 and 3. That makes six. If I double it, it’s 12”

“I think it’s more than 10 because I can see 10 in the middle”

We took part in some sweetie jar estimation and then made our own sweetie jars to challenge others in the groups.

The next day, we estimated how many bingo dabs we could fit in an outline of our hand. It was quite a challenge but we enjoyed counting 1 by 1 and checking our estimates.

We made beautiful Spring daffodil window art this week too. We can’t wait for you to see them at Parents Night soon 🌼

And we had lots of fun visiting the ECC to join them on the Teddy Bears Picnic.

We also continued our learning about emotions. We talked about different feelings and how they can look and feel. Can you recognise any of these emotions?

Week ending 13th March

It is the end of another busy week in Primary 1.

In literacy, our focus were ‘q’ and ‘x’. We learned all about the sounds they make and how to form each letter correctly. We used our new sounds when reading and writing words. Here are the links to the Jolly Phonics songs we use to practise.

To practise our sounds, we took part in lots of activities including playdoh, noughts and crosses, bingo, designing a crown for a queen and using the blocks to build her a castle!

In maths, we continued our learning about sharing. We have been exploring halving. We set up our own pizza shop and had to carefully split our pizza into two equal parts. We know that both parts need to be the same size for it to be a half.

We also had a chance to share objects out fairly between two people. This is also called halving. We learned about some pesky pirates who were not being very fair and helped them share their treasure equally.

We have also been continuing to learn about the months of the year and the seasons.

This week we have been working on something special ahead of Mother’s Day. In the middle of the week we drew portraits of our Mum and added lots of detail. At pick up time, we put each drawing in the window. We asked our families if they could guess which drawing was ours from all the details we added.

On Thursday and Friday, we worked on some beautiful drawings of flowers in a vase. We used paint sticks in lots of vibrant colours to bring our flowers to life. We then cut these out and stuck them onto a card. If you are a mum of  a Primary 1 who would like a little surprise on Sunday, then look away now!

Week ending 6th March

We are at the end of another busy week in Primary 1. We have had an exciting week with world book day celebrations.

We enjoyed taking part in a book character puppet competition and there were some fabulous entries! Ashlyn impressed us all with her winning ‘Paper Dolls’ entry.

We enjoyed listening to a story ‘Nibbles -The Book Monster’. It was read to us by Miss Kockaya who will be joining us as a student teacher in Term 4.

We then got to take part in lots of lovely activities – including illustrating the main character Nibbles!

After that, it was time to go to the hall to choose a new book to take home as part of our school ‘Book’ swap.

We then had a chance to visit Primary 2. They have written their own amazing stories which they read to us. It was such a lovely activity that we all enjoyed.

In numeracy, we have continued learning about sharing. ‘. We set up our own ‘shell shack’ and took in a sharing shells activity. We are using new vocabulary such as ‘equal’ and ‘halving’.

We have also been working on days of the week and months of the year.

Across the curriculum, took part in a STEM challenge as we tried to build a bridge. We also took part in a collaging activity based around the book ‘The Colour Monster’ as we begin to look at emotions during Health & Wellbeing.

Wk ending 27th Feb

Another busy week in Primary One along with lots of fun! In literacy we have been learning the ‘y’ and ‘z’ sound.  We have worked on recognising the sounds, forming them correctly and using them to make words.  As well as building yachts, designing yogurt pots, zoo building, drawing Zog lots of zig zags!

Please clink on the link below for the Jolly Phonics songs to practise at home.

In maths, we have been continuing to learn our days of the week.  We have also been continuing to talk about equal sharing.

Through our Forces topic, we have been investigating forces in everyday objects.  We used fantastic vocabulary when we were experimenting with forces.  We were pushing, pulling, stretching, rubbing, squashing, twisting and bouncing.  The children were also really interested in gravity so we enjoyed watching videos of astronauts eating in space!

We’ve also been busy being very creative this week.  We created wonderful watercolour art and had lots of fun playing the glockenspiels along to music.

Numeracy Homework Week 1

This week is the start of our next  3 week Numeracy Homework Block.  This weeks homework is ‘Play Beetle’.  Please complete and return by Friday 27th February.  We have had lots of fun playing it in class so we’re sure you’ll enjoy playing it at home too.  Don’t worry if you don’t have a dice, you can use a phone/tablet to search for a dice online to play along with.

Happy playing!

week ending 20th Feb

This week our focus sounds were J and V. We practised recognising, saying and forming the letters. We consolidated our learning by building jets, jungles, doing jigsaws and crafting jellyfish! We also created lovely artwork of flowers in vases and used vegetables to do some printing! We also had lots of practise reading and writing words with our sound in them, as well as playing games with our common words.

In numeracy, we have started to learn about sharing. We introduced our new concept using a lovely story called ‘The Doorbell Rang’. We listened to the story and took on roles to act it out. We got to share out some delicious cookies between our characters but just when we had managed to share them out fairly…uh oh! The doorbell rang and in came some new guests! We managed to share them out again but just as we did… the doorbell rang, AGAIN!

We had so much fun taking part in this activity and enjoyed combining literacy, numeracy and drama skills! We were also able to use our learning to work together and ensure that the Gingerbread Men had a ‘fair share’ of buttons.

We have also started to learn about time. This week we had a focus on the days of the week.

This week we took part in a push experiment in science and also watched a perfomance of ‘Oliver Twist’ in the hall. What a fun week!

Here are a few pictures from our gymnastics…

On Friday we talked about Valentines Day and made beautiful cards to take home.  I’m sure you’ll love them as much as I did!

It was digital learning day on Friday too so we used the Chromebooks to play lots of games.  We are really enjoying the Pay for It game.  Click on the link below to play at home too…
