Wk ending 9th Jan

Happy New Year! It was lovely to welcome everyone back this week, ready for another exciting term in Primary One.

In literacy, our sounds this week are ‘g’ and ‘o’. We’ve been working hard on our formation, building words, building houses for Goldilocks and the 3 bears, creating octopuses and working in an office.

In numeracy, we have started learning about money. We talked about what money is and why it’s important we learn about it at school. We have been learning to recognise coins to £2. We’ve also been continuing to work on our number formation and counting.

We began to learn about subtraction. We know that when we subtract, the total gets smaller and the amount we have is less.
We were able to read and work out the answer to some subtraction calculations. We especially enjoyed the ‘squashy subtraction’.

We have started our Scotland topic. We talked about what we already know about Scotland and what we would like to find out. We also had great fun listening to lots of Scottish poems when we were voting for our class poem.

We also began our new topic at P.E. We will be developing our gymnastics skills. We began by learning how to move the equipment we need safely. We worked together in small groups to lift the mats and benches into the right place. We were then able to clear away and store the equipment in the right place at the end of our lesson.

Scots Poem

As part of our whole school Scotland topic, each pupil will learn a Scots poem. In class we had fun listening to lots of poems and then voted on the one we would like to learn. The winner was ‘Corrie Doon’, by Jill Bennett. All children have been given a copy to practise at home. Please practise with your child and keep an eye on the blog for judging dates and Scots Celebration events 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Merry Christmas

Primary One are very excited to be heading home for the Christmas holidays after a very festive and fun filled week!

We have had another excellent term in Primary 1. There has been lots of new learning and fantastic progress. Mrs Ferguson and Mrs Hasson are extremely proud of all of our Primary 1s.

Yesterday, we headed off to the Panto to watch ‘Sleeping Beauty’. We were so excited as we headed off on the big bus and had a wonderful time.

We hope you all have a lovely Christmas and a lovely New Year.

We can’t wait to see you all in 2026.

Wk ending 12th Dec

Well, this has certainly been another busy week in Primary One! Our Nativity rehearsals are in full flow and we can’t wait to share our performance with everyone at next week’s Christmas Service on Wednesday.

In literacy, we have been consolidating our sounds r, m, d, e, c and k. We’ve been thinking of things that start with the sound and blending our sounds together to read words.

In numeracy, we’ve been learning about the numbers ‘Before’ and ‘After’.

Through our Tiddler topic, we investigated another ‘I Wonder’, Electric eels. We learned lots of facts about these amazing creatures and even made our own ‘electrifying’ artwork!

We’ve also been learning some Scottish dancing with the Primary 2s, ready for our party next week. We learned the steps to the Canadian Barn Dance.

And we had so much fun at our Christmas Lunch on Wednesday! The Christmas tunes were playing and there was definitely plenty of Christmas cheer!

Week ending 5th December

It’s the beginning of December so this week we started to get into the Christmas spirit. We put up our class tree and decorated the classroom for Christmas!

We also got to work on making our crafts for the Christmas Fayre. We really enjoyed making our crafts, especially adding the scents and colours to our Christmas themed playdoh! The Fayre was a great success, thanks very much for coming along!

In numeracy, we have been learning about ‘the story of 5’. We have been using lots of our tools such as the rekenreks, numicon and other concrete materials. We also introduced part-part-whole models and have been using them to complete calculations.

This week we introduced the ‘c’ and ‘k’ sounds. We tried so hard to form each letter correctly and produced some very neat work. Here are some photographs of our ‘c’ and ‘k’ activities!

In health and wellbeing we have continued to learn about oral health. We know how to look after our teeth by brushing. We talked about how different types of food can impact our teeth and sorted food into categories.

We also really enjoyed the role play area and even gave each other some check ups!

Inspired by our ‘I see, I think, I wonder’ we began learning about different types of sharks. Take a look at some of our activities!

Week ending 28th November

It was lovely to see everyone back this week after a quiet week last week. We have had another busy week learning new sounds, exploring numbers, buying new toys at the P7 toy fair, practising nativities and getting crafts ready for the Christmas fair!

This week we have been learning the d and e sound. Please see the link below for Jolly Phonics songs to practise at home.

We also practised our formation, created dotty dinosaur ds, continued to practise our word building and created some lovely ‘eggs in the pan’ crafts!

We’ve continued to explore place value and addition this week. We learned how to use the Logico Boards and did some ‘switcher’ calculations.

We’ve also been working on adding lots of details to our drawings. We made fantastic ‘Missing’ Tiddler posters. Look at our wonderful drawing and writing.

We are also having fun taking part in creative dance lessons. We are acting out the Gruffalo story through dance. This week we were tiny mice strolling through the woods, sly foxes and powerful, flying owls.

We loved attending the P7 Toy  Fair. The children were absolutely buzzing with excitement with their new toys! Thank you P7 for organising such a great event!

On Thursday afternoon, during our class walk we visited the nursery! We were so delighted to visit and even got a little chance to play.

This week we had a very special visit from Freddie’s uncle, also known as PC Shirkie! He talked to us about all of the people who can help us and we learned lots about being a police officer. We  talked about road safety and were given a lovely gift bag which contained special reflectors which will help to keep us safe in the dark winter months!

Week ending 21.11.25

This week Primary 1 got the chance to present their very first ‘Big Talk’.  We had a lovely time listening to confident presentations  about ‘My Family’. Everyone did a fantastic job and we are very proud of them!

We still have a few ‘Big Talks’ to hear next week and we are so looking forward to them!

In literacy, we have been continuing to work on our common words. We have been practising writing them, recognising them and making them out of playdough. We used our knowledge of our common words and sounding out to write some dictated sentences.

We also completed our monthly self-portrait for November. We are getting so good at adding lots of details in our drawings. Lots of us were able to write our name independently this month!

In numeracy, we continue to work on addition. We have an understanding that it doesn’t matter which way around you add, the answer will always be the same. We have been working on some ‘switcher’ calculations.

We are getting more confident using concrete materials such as numberlines, counters, tens frames and the rekenreks to add.

We have started completing ‘core’ and ‘challenge’ activities!

This week, we also held our Literacy Open Morning. We had a fantastic time completing  BookBug tasks made for us by our wonderful Primary 7 class. Here are some snaps taken on the day!

Finally, here is one last picture, taken this week whilst we were out and about in the community on a lovely frosty afternoon.

Literacy Homework Week 3

This week we have sent home a few different activities. Firstly there is a read and match sheet using the sounds we have learned so far. Please complete and return by Friday 21st November.
