This week we focussed on the ‘h’ and ‘w’ sounds. We practised forming the letters and word building. We enjoyed creating headbands, hand hedgehogs, building hospitals, drawing Mrs Watt, making wands and enjoyed some Where’s Wally books!

We have been enjoying reading and writing 3 letter CVC words!

Here are a few pictures of just some of the other things we have been up to this week!

Make sure to check our previous post to find out all about about our trip!

Week ending 30th Jan

Here we are at the end of a wonderful month in Primary 1. We have been celebrating all things Scotland and this week had the chance to attend the Scots Verse Celebration. We heard all of the winners recite their poems and were especially excited to hear our P1 winner, Freddie, perform. Here is a video of Freddie performing. We are so proud of you!

In numeracy, we have continued to work on money. We have also been learning about doubling! As a class we came up with useful little prompts to help us remember the “doubles” which will help to speed up our calculations.

We have also been working on reading and writing CVC words. This week we also started reading Bug Club books in small groups. Some of us made fantastic drawings of our the character “Sid”.

We have also been busy in the gym, continuing our gymnastics block.  We got a chance to use some of our large equipment including the monkey bars and ropes! As part of Scotland topic, we have been making maps. Some of us used the blocks to make a fantastic map of a town!

Week ending 23rd Jan

This week we have been continuing to learn our new sounds ‘b’ and ‘u’. We’ve worked on recognising, writing and word building as well as bathing babies, designing butterflies, bikes, bagpipes and umbrellas, building with the blocks and playing with under the water sea creatures.

Here’s is a wee clip of us singing our ‘u’ song!

In numeracy, we’ve continued to focus on money and subtraction. This week our focus has been learning to make different amounts using the correct coins and subtraction using a number line.

Through our Scotland topic, we all took part in the Scots Poem competition. Well done to everyone for working hard to learn and perform their poem.

We had another fantastic ‘Discovery Dens’ session this week. This is where the whole school get a chance to discover a range of activities and develop new skills, in their house groups. Here are a few photos from our pancake making from Den 2.

Here are some picture from our gymnastics session. We enjoyed using the equipment, practising different jumps and balances.

Week Beginning 12th Jan

We have had a lovely week in Primary 1 with lots of new learning. We have been focussing on the ‘f’ and ‘l’ sounds. We have enjoyed making flags, designing farms, forming ‘l’ with lemon scented playdoh, making love hearts and posting letters! We have also been building and reading cvc words and making progress with our common words!

In Numeracy, we have continued our learning about money and subtraction. This week we worked on using a numberline to complete subtraction calculations and were very successful in our learning. Lots of us are able to independently read a calculation and use a ‘rainbow jumps’ to count backwards on the number line to find the answer. Mrs Hasson has been very impressed!

In the gym, we have continued our gymnastics block. This week we were ‘bouncing bunnies’ and were able to travel around the hall safely in various ways. We practised two footed jumps and remembered how to safely set up and put away our equipment.

Last week, we talked about our class Chromebooks and the types of things we can do with them. Lots of us said that we would like to be able to set up games and activities by ourselves. This week, we had 4 very helpful P7s who helped us set up and close the drawing programme ‘canvas’ independently.  We can’t wait to continue developing new chromebook skills!

Change of Walking Day

This term we will go back to:

Tuesdays: walking

Thursday : inside PE

Please dress appropriately for our walking days, ie jackets with hoods, sturdy shoes and remember gym kits on Thursdays, removing any earrings too.

Thanks again for your continued support.

Wk ending 9th Jan

Happy New Year! It was lovely to welcome everyone back this week, ready for another exciting term in Primary One.

In literacy, our sounds this week are ‘g’ and ‘o’. We’ve been working hard on our formation, building words, building houses for Goldilocks and the 3 bears, creating octopuses and working in an office.

In numeracy, we have started learning about money. We talked about what money is and why it’s important we learn about it at school. We have been learning to recognise coins to £2. We’ve also been continuing to work on our number formation and counting.

We began to learn about subtraction. We know that when we subtract, the total gets smaller and the amount we have is less.
We were able to read and work out the answer to some subtraction calculations. We especially enjoyed the ‘squashy subtraction’.

We have started our Scotland topic. We talked about what we already know about Scotland and what we would like to find out. We also had great fun listening to lots of Scottish poems when we were voting for our class poem.

We also began our new topic at P.E. We will be developing our gymnastics skills. We began by learning how to move the equipment we need safely. We worked together in small groups to lift the mats and benches into the right place. We were then able to clear away and store the equipment in the right place at the end of our lesson.

Scots Poem

As part of our whole school Scotland topic, each pupil will learn a Scots poem. In class we had fun listening to lots of poems and then voted on the one we would like to learn. The winner was ‘Corrie Doon’, by Jill Bennett. All children have been given a copy to practise at home. Please practise with your child and keep an eye on the blog for judging dates and Scots Celebration events 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿
