Another busy week in Primary One along with lots of fun! In literacy we have been learning the ‘y’ and ‘z’ sound. We have worked on recognising the sounds, forming them correctly and using them to make words. As well as building yachts, designing yogurt pots, zoo building, drawing Zog lots of zig zags!
Please clink on the link below for the Jolly Phonics songs to practise at home.
In maths, we have been continuing to learn our days of the week. We have also been continuing to talk about equal sharing.
Through our Forces topic, we have been investigating forces in everyday objects. We used fantastic vocabulary when we were experimenting with forces. We were pushing, pulling, stretching, rubbing, squashing, twisting and bouncing. The children were also really interested in gravity so we enjoyed watching videos of astronauts eating in space!
We’ve also been busy being very creative this week. We created wonderful watercolour art and had lots of fun playing the glockenspiels along to music.
This week is the start of our next 3 week Numeracy Homework Block. This weeks homework is ‘Play Beetle’. Please complete and return by Friday 27th February. We have had lots of fun playing it in class so we’re sure you’ll enjoy playing it at home too. Don’t worry if you don’t have a dice, you can use a phone/tablet to search for a dice online to play along with.
Happy playing!

Although it has been a short week, it has been another busy week in Primary One.
In literacy, we have been working on our writing. We have been learning to write in sentences and have been talking about our writing targets. We have also been word building and had a common words disco!

We have also had Discovery Dens again this week. Here is a little look at the music den playing the Glockenspiels.

In numeracy, we have started learning about money. We talked about what money is and why it’s important we learn about it at school. We have been learning to recognise coins to £2. We’ve also been continuing to work on our number formation and counting.
We began to learn about subtraction. We know that when we subtract, the total gets smaller and the amount we have is less.
We were able to read and work out the answer to some subtraction calculations. We especially enjoyed the ‘squashy subtraction’.
We have started our Scotland topic. We talked about what we already know about Scotland and what we would like to find out. We also had great fun listening to lots of Scottish poems when we were voting for our class poem.
We also began our new topic at P.E. We will be developing our gymnastics skills. We began by learning how to move the equipment we need safely. We worked together in small groups to lift the mats and benches into the right place. We were then able to clear away and store the equipment in the right place at the end of our lesson.
As part of our whole school Scotland topic, each pupil will learn a Scots poem. In class we had fun listening to lots of poems and then voted on the one we would like to learn. The winner was ‘Corrie Doon’, by Jill Bennett. All children have been given a copy to practise at home. Please practise with your child and keep an eye on the blog for judging dates and Scots Celebration events 🏴
