Bar Modelling to Solve Percentage Problems
This week we have begun to use Bar Modelling as a way to solve problems when calculating percentages of quantities. We have found it especially helpful to draw out the problems as it helps with our understanding of what 10% actually looks like.
Samba Drumming with Oliver Cox
We have recently started (19.01.22) a four week block of Samba drumming with Oliver Cox who is a composer and percussionist. We have learnt about keeping in time with the beat of music and we were able to get the chance to play a variety of percussion instruments. We will be building up to creating a big performance with our newly learnt skills.
Numeracy in the Snow
We took the opportunity to make use of the snowfall today and go outside to practise some of newly learned Numeracy skills. Since coming back from the Winter Break we have been learning about Roman Numerals and how they are used to show different number values. We worked in gropus to see if we could create number lines up to fifty before it got too cold.
Solar System
We recently went out into the playground to create scale drawings of the Solar System. Mr McNichol provided us with a variety of measuring equipment and a set of instructions. Working in groups, we had to follow the instructions carefully and draw and label the different planets in orbit around the Sun. Unfortunately the weather took a turn for the worse, washed away our work and we had to abandon what were doing. However, we are hoping to get outside and have another go at it very soon.
Messy Spelling
As part of spelling work this week we experimented with something a bit different. We were all given an amount of shaving foam which we spread out across our tables. Next, we then practised writing each of our words in the foam. Once we had written our words we could mess up the foam and start again. We are hoping that Mr McNichol will let us do it again soon.
We took part in a national youth conference investigating rights of the child.
Congratulations to Lucas who won a £25 amazon voucher as part of a free draw for taking part.
We learned about the different layers of planet Earth then created our own 3D models showing each of these from plasticine.
A Tarsia puzzle is a jigsaw where the edge of each piece contains an answer, a question or in the case of the edges is left blank. To complete the puzzle pupils must match each answer to the correct question and rebuild the original shape.
They promote group work and discussion, and provide a nice alternative to doing questions out of a textbook.
We enjoyed the challenge of these puzzles to help revise and consolidate the new skills we have learning about in our Fractions unit.
