Numeracy Strategies for Parents/Carers
The National Numeracy website have developed a Family Maths Toolkit to support family learning in numeracy and maths. There are a range of activities here with a focus on where maths can be found in everyday life.
Education Scotland have provided support for parents and carers in numeracy and mathematics in their Scotland Learns – Numeracy and Mathematics site.
The videos provide support for parents and carers supporting their childrens learning in numeracy and mathematics.

The National Centre in the Teaching of Mathematics have created a site Support for Parents and Carers Helping Children with Maths This site provides links to activities and lessons.
Solving Together is an exciting project, funded by Nesta and Tata, which aims to promote parental engagement with mathematics. This project focuses on family-friendly homework activities for age 11-12 students. We suggest that parents/carers and their children work together on one activity each week, over a six week period. Parents and carers may wish to watch the Guidance for Parents video before trying out the activities with children.
The Guidance for Teachers explains the thinking behind this project, and offers suggestions for how to follow up the homework activities in class.
Erikson Early Math – Family Maths
The Erikson Early Math Collaborative have provided links to resources and activities to support family learning focussed on early level numeracy and maths. A great site for supporting Early Level maths development.
ATM experts are sharing ideas through Maths Snacks videos, to support children and parents whilst children are away from school for whatever reason. The videos are a mix of tasks, puzzles, challenges and games; selected to support and enrich mathematics taught at school.
Many videos can be accessed by very young children, with a little bit of adult support, and all are relevant to pupils across the school age range. There’s hardly ever a single right answer and there are many ways of working on tasks. The videos are designed to entice and to focus on working in the ways mathematicians do; such as exploring situations, looking for patterns and rules, asking questions and seeking answers, and trying out and testing ideas.
Kentucky Family Math is a site dedicated to supporting family learning in maths and has a range of activities that are engaging for parents, carers and children.
Bedtime Math is an app that provides daily maths activities linked to a bedtime story. A lovely way for parents, carers and children to develop literacy and numeracy skills together.
