Term 4 – Summer
Outdoor learning – why everyone loves summer! We have been outdoors to investigate flowers to help us with our writing. This term we are taking a closer look at Shape Poems and how they are constructed. We have included: Adjectives, Similes and Alliteration to level up our poems, and add wonderful details. We will be posting some examples soon!
We also had the opportunity to spend time in the garden with Mrs Sullivan as she helped us to plant seeds in our school garden. We look forward to watching them grow over the next few months and be ready to pick just in time for Harvest!

Water Safety
We were very lucky and received a visit from a water safety expert. She taught us key skills to stay safe when playing in the water. She showed us posters which we had to investigate and look for potential dangers near the water. She played games whereby the children had to save each other from the water using a pool noodle.
We know if we run in to trouble in the water, we need to stay calm and lie on our back to float like a star. We talked about ice water and how your body can go into shock and the importance of breathing and remaining calm. We use the motto: “Catch it, Cuddle it, Kick!” in order to be saved from the water as quickly as possible.
The children enjoyed throwing the floats (balls) to save the teddy, they worked on their aim and accuracy. Primary 2/3 are more water safety aware and had great fun learning all about it!

This week we have extended our learning of halves and quarters by applying our learning to quantities. We are confident finding a half of a shape and are now exploring finding a half of a number. We know to half a number, it mus be shared equally between two so we are currently exploring this using practical materials. Some of the children were able to use their knowledge of halving numbers up to 10 mentally and apply this to numbers with tens and units. You all work so incredibly hard and I am extremely proud of you all!

This term, we kick started our french lessons by learning about some parts of the body. Here’s a fun snapshot of how best we learn.. by having fun! You may think the videos are getting faster but it is the true speed of the songs in the videos, we had so much fun taking part in this!

We have been so lucky this week to receive a visit from staff at the Glasgow Science Centre presenting their GO OXYGEN GO! programme. Primary 1/2 and Primary 2/3 took part in the session and learned all about how our bodies need oxygen to survive. We were taken on a fun educational journey from taking in breathes (and how important bogies and hairs are in our nose to keep all the dust and germs away), the journey of oxygen into our lungs, the heart pumping blood to our muscles and the blood flowing from the heart being taken Away by the Arteries and brought back by the veins. The most exciting part was learning about Carbon Dioxide being released back out when we exhale! It was truly an education and engaging experience which was thoroughly enjoyed by all pupils and staff!

I know homework can often be an additional challenge to a busy week and nightly routine but many of the children are ASKING (yes, you read that right! 😜) for homework!! I am so pleased for the enthusiasm and commitment to their learning!
I have created a very relaxed at home spelling activity for the children to take part in. Each child will be given a Spelling Bee challenge sheet containing bronze, silver and gold level common words. Starting with the bronze, children can practice spelling these 12 words in any way you choose and when they feel confident enough that they can spell each one, return the slip at the bottom “Bronze Challenge – I’m ready… test me” to myself and I’ll test them. If they manage to get most words correct, they will receive a sticker and proceed onto practicing the Silver challenge words at home. They will then repeat the process with the silver and finally onto the gold whereby they will receive a certificate for passing level 1. Then it’s on to level 2!
We will display each child’s progress in school, this is to highlight their own growth in literacy rather than in competition with other children. Your little spelling bee will work towards spelling over 200 words correctly. I know they will excel in this area very quickly as they are such smart cookies! It will also give you the opportunity to engage with their learning and monitor their progress at home. Please only return 1 slip per week so children have enough time to really understand the words they are learning and can progress at a sustainable pace.
I have attached a copy of Level 1 so you know what to expect and can look out for it in your child’s bag tomorrow 😁

We have been revising addition within 100 using a tens and units frame to support. Some children began to add 3 digit numbers and when they felt confident we introduced addition with carrying! Well done for always trying your best! We will continue to develop our understanding of addition over the next couple of weeks and introduce subtraction of 2 digit numbers using chimney sums too.
