Week Beginning 6th October 2025

Phonemes

We are now have literacy groups – group 1 & group 2. If your child does not know which group they are in, please email me. My email address is below.

Group 1 will learn the phonemes ‘p’ on Monday & ‘n’ on Wednesday. Please practise these at home. Some ideas include:

  • Go for a walk with an adult, look for the phonemes on the street signs. Email me your photos if you want to!
  • Find any items at home that have the sounds ‘i’, ‘p’  or ‘n’ at the beginning, middle or the end of the word? 
  • Watch the videos below and practise writing the letters. Remember to start and finish at the correct places.

Common words – group 1 have learned the common words a, at, the, it, in & I. This week they will learn an & is.

Group 2

We are learning the ‘y’ phoneme (as in funny, baby, mummy, etc) this week! The word list we will be using this week is below:

Some ideas to practise this phoneme are below:

  • Look through a book at home. Can you find a word where the letter y is making the ‘ai’ phoneme sound?
  • Try writing your words with different coloured pencils
  • Write the words out on to separate pieces of paper.  Ask someone at home to say one of the words, see if you can find the word.
  • Play look, cover, write, check with the words

Common words – we are revising all stage 1 common words. These can be found at the back of their reading word jotter. Please practise these words also.

 

Reading

Group 1 – please continues to practise sight words.

Group 2 – We will begin reading homework this week. Please check your child’s bag for their book.

Numeracy 

We are working on recognising, writing, counting & ordering numbers. Your child is in a maths group.

Strawberries are working on numbers to 100 & have begun to learn about odd & even numbers.

Blueberries are working on numbers to 20.

Raspberries & Blackberries are working on numbers to 10.

Some ideas to practise this are:

  • Counting items in the house
  • Collecting stones/sticks while out a walk & counting them e.g.  Asking your child to get you 3 sticks, etc
  • Write the number & ask them what number it is
  • Writing number in chalk
  • Go on a number hunt in the community
  • Write a number line with missing numbers, can your child fill in the missing numbers

Phonemes

P1 have begun learning phonemes. Phonemes are the sounds that the letters make.

So far they have learned s and a. This week they will learn t and i. Please practise reading & writing these at home.

Some ideas to practise phonemes include:

  • Going on a phoneme hunt e.g. go a walk & see if you can find things that begin with the ‘s’ phoneme; stick, stamp, sign, etc.
  • Write the phoneme in shaving foam
  • Make the phoneme using play dough
  • Rainbow write the phoneme

Our primary 2’s have also begin learning their new phonemes. Last week they covered ‘ay’ as in day, say, play, etc. This week they will be working on ‘ea’ as in leaf, eat. The word lists we have been working with are below.

Some ideas to practise:

  • Practise writing these words with chalk outside
  • Try some rainbow writing – writing the word with a different colour each time
  • Write a sentence with each word
  • Play look, cover, write, check with the words

 

Reading

Primary 1 – please continue to practise your child’s sight words with them.

Primary 2 – formal reading groups will begin next week. This week they have a jotter with sights words in it. Please practise the highlighted words with them.
