Week Beginning 1st December
Happy December! Here is what we are learning this week & some ideas of how to practise at home:
Phonemes
Group 1 are learning ‘u’ & ‘l’ this week.
Group 2 are learning the ‘ou’ phoneme (as in out).
Some ideas of how to practise these at home are:
- Phoneme hunt – go for a walk outside & see if you can find things which contain their phoneme.
- Make phoneme or words with heir phoneme out of collage materials.
- Read a book together. Can your child spot words with their phoneme?
- Practise forming their phoneme correctly using pen, pencil, shaving foam, in the bath with bath bubbles, a stick on the mud/frost etc. Correct formation can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/@uptoninfantschoolletterfor2792/videos
Some of the words we will be using this week are below.
Group 1:
- Make a number line out of chalk. Give your child an addition calculation to solve by taking steps along the number line.
- Roll two dice, add the two numbers & write the number sentence.
- Create some addition calculations for your child so solve. Use concrete materials to help e.g. pasta, stones, sticks.

Week Beginning 24th November
Phonemes
Group 1 are learning ‘g’ & ‘o’ this week.
Group 2 are working on ‘ow’ (word list below)
Some ideas to practise phonemes are:
- Ask your child to spell a word which has their phoneme.
- Go on a phoneme hunt to find things that have that phoneme in it.
- Have your child use sticks or stones to make their phoneme.

- Dominos – choose a donimo & add the two sides. Try to write the number sentence e.g. 3 + 2 = 5

Week Beginning 17th November
Phonemes
This week is a consolidation week for both groups! We are consolidation all phonemes learned so far.
So far, group one have learned; s, a, t, p, i, n, r, m, e, c, k, m, & d!
Group 2 have learned; ea, ay, y, ss, ll & ff.
Some ideas to practise these at home are:
- Play I spy but say the phoneme (sound)
- Collect some smooth, round stones while out a walk. Paint a sound onto each stone with nail varnish. Once dry, they can be used outside to make words.

- Sound some words when giving instructions. e.g. Get in the c-a-r. Pass me the p-e-n.
Reading
Reading books will be in school bags tomorrow, please practise reading with your child.
Numeracy
We are all working on addition.
Some ideas to practise this are:
- practise writing numbers at home
- Addition with Dice: Roll two dice and have your child add up the numbers that appear on the top face. Extension – can your child write out the calculation i.e. 5 + 3 = 8.

Firstly, find a selection of physical objects e.g. pieces of fruit, building blocks or socks. Simply put them in two groups and add them together with your child.

Phonemes
Group 1 will learn the phonemes ‘m’ on Monday & ‘d’ on Thursday. Please practise these at home. Some ideas include:
- Look for that phoneme in a book.
- Go on a phoneme hunt around the house to find things that have that phoneme.
- Make the phoneme out of natural materials outside.
- Have your child ‘rainbow write’ the phoneme (write the phoneme over & over in different colours)
Group 1’s common words are: am & are
Previous common words are: a, at, the, it, in, I, an, is, can, ask, did & and.
Group 2
This week we are learning the ‘ff’ phoneme.
Here is the word list we will be using:
Reading
Reading books will be in school bags, please practise reading with your child.
Numeracy
We are working on recognising, writing, counting & ordering numbers. All groups are working on addition.
Some ideas to practise this are:
- practice writing numbers at home
- give an addition calculation e.g. 3 + 2. Get your child to solve using concrete materials e.g. buttons, stones, leaves.
- Gather some household items together (small toys, spoons, socks, bottle lids, yoghurt pots) and practise counting these items. You can then try combining the quantities of the items you have. For example: Put 3 socks in the basket and then put 5 socks in the basket. Count out how many socks you have all together.

Group 1 will learn the phonemes ‘h’ on Monday & ‘r’ on Thursday. Please practise these at home. Some ideas include:
- Use some playdough to make the phoneme.
- Cut the phoneme out of magazines or newspapers.
- Go on a phoneme hunt around the house to find things that have that phoneme.
- If you have chalk, write the phoneme outside in your garden.
- Make the phoneme out of natural materials outside.

Group 2
This week we are learning the ‘ll’ phoneme.

Your child is in a maths group.
Strawberries are working on numbers to 100.
Blueberries are working on numbers to 20.
Raspberries & Blackberries are working on numbers to 10.

Phonemes
Group 1 will learn the phonemes ‘c’ & ‘k’ on Monday & ‘e’ on Thursday. Please practise these at home. Some ideas include:
- Go for a walk with an adult, look for the phonemes on the street signs. Email me your photos if you want to!
- Find any items at home that have the sounds ‘c/k’ & ‘e’ at the beginning, middle or the end of the word?
- Write out a giant ‘c/k’ or ‘e’ on a piece of paper & have your child decorate it.
- Have your child create this week’s sounds out of natural material e.g. stones, shells, sticks, etc.
This week’s common words will be introduced on Tuesday. They are: can & ask.
Previous common words are: a, at, the, it, in, I, an, is.
Group 2
This week we are learning the ‘ss’ phoneme.
Here is the word list we will be using:
- Write the words out in ‘fancy’ writing
- Write the words out using the opposite hand that you use usually
- Be a phoneme detective – look in books, magazines, etc for this week’s phoneme.
- Have your child make flashcards.
Stage 2 common words will be introduced on Tuesday this week. These are; play, away & put.
Reading
Reading books will be in school bags, please practise reading with your child.
Numeracy
We are working on recognising, writing, counting & ordering numbers.
Your child is in a maths group.
Strawberries are working on numbers to 100 & have begun to learn about odd & even numbers. They have also been learning to count in 2’s.
Blueberries are working on numbers to 20.
Raspberries & Blackberries are working on numbers to 10.
Some ideas to practise this are:
- Collecting stones/sticks while out a walk & counting them e.g. Asking your child to get you 8 sticks, etc
- Ask them to write a particular number
- Writing numbers in shaving foam
- Go on a number hunt in the community
- Write a number line with missing numbers, can your child fill in the missing numbers?
- Take steps counting in 2’s

We are now have literacy groups – group 1 & group 2. If your child does not know which group they are in, please email me. My email address is below.
Group 1 will learn the phonemes ‘p’ on Monday & ‘n’ on Wednesday. Please practise these at home. Some ideas include:
- Go for a walk with an adult, look for the phonemes on the street signs. Email me your photos if you want to!

Common words – group 1 have learned the common words a, at, the, it, in & I. This week they will learn an & is.
Group 2
We are learning the ‘y’ phoneme (as in funny, baby, mummy, etc) this week! The word list we will be using this week is below:
Some ideas to practise this phoneme are below:
- Look through a book at home. Can you find a word where the letter y is making the ‘ai’ phoneme sound?
- Try writing your words with different coloured pencils
- Write the words out on to separate pieces of paper. Ask someone at home to say one of the words, see if you can find the word.
- Play look, cover, write, check with the words
Common words – we are revising all stage 1 common words. These can be found at the back of their reading word jotter. Please practise these words also.
Reading
Group 1 – please continues to practise sight words.
Group 2 – We will begin reading homework this week. Please check your child’s bag for their book.

Phonemes
P1 have begun learning phonemes. Phonemes are the sounds that the letters make.
So far they have learned s and a. This week they will learn t and i. Please practise reading & writing these at home.
Some ideas to practise phonemes include:
- Going on a phoneme hunt e.g. go a walk & see if you can find things that begin with the ‘s’ phoneme; stick, stamp, sign, etc.
- Write the phoneme in shaving foam
- Make the phoneme using play dough
- Rainbow write the phoneme
Our primary 2’s have also begin learning their new phonemes. Last week they covered ‘ay’ as in day, say, play, etc. This week they will be working on ‘ea’ as in leaf, eat. The word lists we have been working with are below.
Some ideas to practise:
- Practise writing these words with chalk outside
- Try some rainbow writing – writing the word with a different colour each time
- Write a sentence with each word
- Play look, cover, write, check with the words
Reading
Primary 1 – please continue to practise your child’s sight words with them.
Primary 2 – formal reading groups will begin next week. This week they have a jotter with sights words in it. Please practise the highlighted words with them.
