Throughout history, women have fought courageously and tirelessly to assert themselves as individuals and experts in their field.  Groundbreaking designers, space explorers, pilots, political activists and feminists, artists, monarchs and leaders. There is something these inspirational women all share in common: they are all warriors and continue to inspire us in our own modern lives.

Eleanor Roosevelt once said, ‘do one thing every day that scares you.’ Below are just a handful of headstrong women who echoed that call to arms and did just that:-

Cleopatra, Rosa Parks, Mary Wollstonecraft, Nora Ephron, Emmeline Pankhurst, Malala Yousafzai, Amelia Earhart, Valentina Tereshkova, Frida Kahlo, Florence Nightingale, Elizabeth Taylor, Coco Chanel, Marie Curie, Edith Cavell

Do some research to see what each woman is known for.

What does your name mean?  How old do you think your name is? What country or culture did your name come from? These are all questions you should be asking today – and of course, with a little research, you should be finding them out!
Different generations will often have different names, some more popular than the others, and many created according to trends of the time.  Perhaps you or members of your family were named after a famous film star or a character in a book which your parents were fond of.
And it’s not just your first name you could look into – family names have even more of a wealth of history behind them. For many people,  their last name originally came from the occupation of their ancestors.  You may find after looking into it carefully that your last name takes you back to your ancestors on the other side of the world. Maybe you have royalty in your bloodline, or perhaps even some key historical figures. Today is the day to find out!

EXTRA INFORMATION

Tomorrow is St Piran’s Day.  St. Piran is the patron saint of Cornwall, the southern most corner of Great Britain.

Legend tells us that St.Piran sailed to Cornwall on a millstone. Originally it had been tied around his neck and he had been cast into the Atlantic by people jealous of his power to heal and work miracles, however he managed to climb on it and sail to shore. Piran built himself a small chapel in Penhale sands and his first disciples were said to be a badger, a fox and a bear.

The flag of St Piran is also the Cornish flag – white cross on a black background. It symbolises the discovery of tin by the saint as the white metal flowed from the black rock.

THURSDAY 3RD MARCH 2022

Good morning everyone, I hope you all had a good day yesterday – let’s make it even better today!

THURSDAY MORNING CHALLENGE

TIMETABLE – THURSDAY 3RD MARCH 2022

Today we celebrate  the 25th Anniversary of World Book Day, but it is also World Wildlife Day.  The world is full of amazing creatures from the birds of the air to the majestic whales of the sea.  World Wildlife Day is a day to remind us of our responsibilities to our world and the lifeforms we share it with. No matter what you love about wildlife, you can spend the day taking action to help protect it.

This day is all about raising awareness of wild flora and fauna across the world. Whether you love animals, you’re passionate about plants, or you’re concerned about climate change, it’s the day that you can use to educate yourself or others.  On March 3rd, 1973 the United Nations General Assembly took a stand to protect Endangered Species throughout the world.  At this time hundreds of endangered species were being threatened every year, and extinction was at a staggeringly high rate.  If you are passionate about the Earth and everything on it, celebrating is a must.

LITERACY TASKS

SUMMER/WINTER – COSMO B HENDERSON PCM

AUTUMN/SPRING – COMING HOME

Tomorrow is World Book Day. We will carry out some fun activities relating to our class novel Goodnight Mister Tom, and our topic of World War II.  No special dress-up costume is required, but you may want to dress as an evacuee.  If not you’ll still need to wear your Identification Label as you could be evacuated at any time!  Remember, there was no brand name clothing between 1939-45!

Today is National Old Stuff Day, all the bits and bobs that have been gathering dust for ages in your home.  It’s so easy to let things gather dust. If we don’t use them every day, some things can get pushed to the side and stay there.

You could celebrate National Old Stuff Day by taking something old and freshening it up.  You can clean it, fix it, paint it, or give it any sort of makeover that is required.  Or maybe now is a good day to declutter? Stuff you aren’t so into any more could make a great gift for someone else, or you could always pass you old things on to your local charity shop.

If you’re in a crafty mood, you could upcycle! Today would also be a good day to visit your older relatives and learn about your family history.

Remember …  today’s new stuff will one day be old stuff!

TUESDAY 1ST MARCH 2022

Rabbits, Rabbits, Rabbits!

Good morning P6/7!

Today is “Fat Tuesday”, or Mardi Gras as they say in French.  The festival can last for many days,  in some countries this period is also has a carnival. One famous carnival takes place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Another one occurs in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Mardi Gras comes from the fact that a festival takes place on the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent. It also refers to the old custom of consuming all the fats in the home before Lent.  This is a period of 40 days that ends with Easter.  During Lent, Christians  often deny themselves certain foods as a way to remember the sacrifice they believe Christ made for them. People sometimes used up their eggs and butter by making pancakes. Many people today still observe Shrove Tuesday by eating pancakes. Some towns even hold pancake races, in which people flip pancakes in a frying pan as they run.

MONDAY MORNING CHALLENGE

Today is National Tooth Fairy Day, in many cultures around the world, various traditions around the tooth fairy are celebrated. The tooth fairy has been around since at least the Middle Ages, although the exact origins are still unknown.  The tradition usually goes that a child who loses a tooth can leave it under his or her pillow that night. This special creature stealthily exchanges a child’s lost tooth for a coin or a treat during the night. In some traditions, this role is thought to be carried out by  a small animal, such as a mouse, rabbit, cat or dog, while other cultures may tend to associate it more with a mythical creature akin to Tinkerbell.  Since each child typically has 20 baby teeth that they will lose to make room for permanent teeth, the Tooth Fairy has a fairly busy job and probably collects about 300,000 teeth from children all over the world–each night. That’s a very busy fairy!

To celebrate National Tooth Fairy Day, making a craft or enjoying a tooth-related activity can be loads of fun. You might also want to make your own tooth pillow or bag, a tiny fabric envelope which serves as a place to keep loose teeth so they don’t get lost while waiting for the tooth fairy by sewing or gluing fabric together.  Learn some interesting facts about teeth, and don’t forget to brush and care for your teeth in a responsible and healthy manner!

RABBITS! RABBITS! RABBITS!

Good morning P6/7.  There is a superstition wherein a person should say or repeat the words “rabbit”, “rabbits” and/or “white rabbits” aloud upon waking on the first day of a new  month to ensure good luck for the rest of it.
February is the shortest month with only 28 days, 29 in a leap year! Do you know when the next leap year is?

TUESDAY MORNING CHALLENGE

NATIONAL MILK DAY

In 1863, French chemist and biologist Louis Pasteur made it possible for milk and other food and drinks to be stored for more extended periods. He developed a method of killing harmful bacteria that is now called pasteurisation.

The United States and Australia export more milk and milk products than any other country. Those products include cheese, yogurt, ice cream, butter, cream, powdered milk, and much more. Throughout the world, more than 6 billion people consume milk and the products we make from it. One of the reasons is because milk provides nutrients such as calcium, potassium, vitamin B12, and vitamin A.

The females of all mammal species can produce milk. However, cows produced 85% of all milk worldwide. Apart from cattle, many kinds of livestock contribute milk used by humans including buffalo, goat, sheep, camel, donkey, horse, reindeer, and yak!

  • Make your own cheese.
  • Have a large glass of milk or even a milkshake!
  • Add chocolate, strawberry, or malted flavourings to your milk.
  • Invite a friend for homemade hot chocolate.
  • While drinking your milk, learn more about the nutrients in milk.

MONDAY 10TH JANUARY 2022

Good morning P6/7, I hope you all had a fantastic weekend.  Today is the start of another great week!

MONDAY MORNING CHALLENGE

LITERACY HOMEWORK 10:1

PLOUGH MONDAY

Plough Monday is the first Monday after Epiphany (12th Night after Christmas).  Plough Monday is the traditional start of the English agricultural year and was an important and fun day for farm workers. In medieval times, it was common for ploughs to be blessed by the church, and for money to be collected for the Plough Light, a flame that would be kept burning throughout the year to bring good luck to the ploughmen and farm labourers.

You could celebrate the ancient festival of Plough Monday with a bread and cheese platter (ploughman’s lunch).  You could also do your own research to find out which other activities relate to Plough Monday.

Don’t forget to complete your SumDog Challenges in class and at home this week!
