Christmas Nativity

Christmas Party 2025!- Friday 12th December!
We enjoyed our Christmas party and a special guest arrived too!

We all had a lovely time!
3d shapes  8.12.25This week we are starting to learn about 3d shapes. We looked around our classroom for 3d shapes. We then took our shape hunt round the inside of our school.
We learn best through play so we used the 3D shapes in our model  making together and talked all about them together!

Challenge!
At home we have to look around our home for 3d shapes. Which 3d shapes will you find?
6.16.25
Letters to Santa
We have been using our writing skills to write a letter to Santa. We then took them to  a very special post box in our school!

I wonder what we all asked Santa for?
6.12.25- 2D Shapes (Indoors)
We have been learning about shapes with straight sides. We have been counting sides and using lollipop sticks to make shapes, shape diagrams and also using the straight lines creatively to make shape art. We love playing with shapes in P1L!

We then looked at shapes with  straight or curved sides too and made pictures using circles, squares, triangles and rectangles. The children named the shapes they used in their pictures and talked about their shape art.

The children then explored 2D shapes further using our magnetic shapes. They used the magnets and drew round shapes and patterns too.

Then Shakira noticed that these 2D shapes can join to make ones which stand up too- 3D shapes!

5.12.25-  Outdoor Learning – 2D Shapes

As part of outdoor learning this week, we have been revisiting the names and properties of 2D shapes. We came outdoors to do a 2D shape hunt together. We talked about some of the shapes we saw in our outdoor classroom and school playground, Then the children tried drawing the 2D shapes they had found using chalk on our damp playground. This practical play allowed for lots of talk about shapes,  their sides and their corners. Next week we will move on to investigate 3D shapes too!

5.12.25–  Numbots

Please remember to encourage your child to play the online game Numbots to help reinforce concepts taught in class. If you require your child’s password please get in touch.

Pattern Making Outdoors – 25.11.25

Each week, we go outside to learn in the outdoors. We went outside to learn all about patterns! We have been  learning all about patterns in nature and also how to use natural materials to make repeating patterns using 2 or 3 different items found naturally outdoors. We then revisited this learning indoors and developed it on there too.

The children then used this learning in the next few lessons to extend their repeated pattern making indoors too!

Book Fair Week- November 2025
Book Fair Week at Lochnorris and our school book fair!
This week the children have been bringing in their favourite books to share with the class. We have been stopping for a while each afternoon to enjoy a book on our own in class. We have started to visit the school library every Monday morning and the children had fun dressing up as book characters and enjoying looking at lots of different books at our school book fair!

As a class, we voted for our favourite stories-

The children dressed up as either favourite story characters or as the challenge was, as a word!

Finally, we selected a favourite and Mrs Lee read stories in person and on video too!
We had such a lovely week!
Bonfire Night
The children were learning all about fireworks and firework safety. They wrote descriptive words about fireworks as they watched videos of them. They played firework themed games and made music. They also used pastels to create firework patterns on the dark blue night sky-

The children also made some firework pattern collages using colourful pipe cleaners and buttons. We love learning through play here in P1L

Hallowe’en 2025

The children have enjoyed carving and painting pumpkins and other Hallowe’en art and play activities. They all had fun at our class Hallowe’en party where we played party games, bobbed for apples and guised- singing a song or telling a joke. We had a lovely, spooky day!

Book Focus ‘Leaf Man’ by Lois Elhert (6.10.25)

We have been reading the book ‘Leaf Man’ and looking at the wonderful art work within it. The art work was made with leaves. The children had a go at making their own leaf people outdoors.

Colour Mixing and Finger Painting

Autumn Trees ( 6.10.25)

The children colour mixed to make brown for the trunk and branches of their trees then used autumn colours to finger print the falling leaves

Our Farm Visit (3.10.25)

We visited Dumfries House Farm to learn all about farm animal life cycles, caring for farm animals and where the different foods we eat come from.

We fed the chickens, ducks, geese and turkeys. Then we met the horse , the claves and the sheep. We loved the pigs and we milked the pretend cow. We played games too and listened well to Dumfries House teachers- Heather and Claire.

Indoor Leaf Sorting and creative leaf art  (1.10.25)

The children sorted the leaves we found during our autumn walk . We sorted by type of tree/leaf and by colour then had fun making imaginative pictures with them. We worked indoors as it was windy!

 Our October Autumn Walk   (1.10.25)

We have been learning about the seasons of the year. We have been learning about how the trees change colour and about hibernation. The children went an autumn walk and gathered leaves, twigs, acorns and other exciting autumn finds. They then used a leaf identifier to identify the trees which the different leaves came from. We had a lovely afternoon and the weather was kind to us!

Welcome to October !

Our October ‘Have a Go ‘Grid

We are going to be learning new phonemes and numeracy concepts this month. Your child will have a copy of our homework grid in their bag along with games to play. Please spend time encouraging your child to sound out and blend words to help with their reading, writing and spelling e.g. rat – r a t  blend the letters rat, say the word – rat.

23.9.25- Parents Open Afternoon- Numeracy Focus

A huge thank you to parents and family members who came to support our open afternoon. It was just wonderful to see you all and I hope you enjoyed your visit. Here are a few photos of your time with us-

September-Outdoor Learning

The children love to learn outdoors. We use leaves, twigs and natural materials, we go walks and use our senses to learn about nature and most importantly, we have fun playing  learning outdoors-

September – Play in Primary 1

Here in Primary 1 the children learn through play- they make decisions, make choices and work together. They also visit our teaching table for more teacher led activities too. Here are some of our play photos-

September -Numeracy

Our September focus has been on number rhymes, counting out objects, matching amounts to numbers to 5 or 10 and forming numbers too. We were counting indoors and outside too!

 September – Literacy

Literacy – Active Literacy –

This  month, we were excited to start Active Literacy, spelling with the phonemes we have been taught. To help us learn we have to say the word, break it up ( at = a  t), make it with the magnetic letters, blend it and read it then finally write it in the elkinon boxes. We tried our best and had a go!

Each week we will be spelling using these strategies.

Our focus has  also been on reading and enjoying traditional tales, learning about rhyming words, writing our first names and learning our class literacy routines.
