Literacy- P1 Reading in January 2026
This term has seen Primary 1 start reading some of the books from Bug Club- the school’s online reading programme. Each child has been allocated a book. Please log in and support your child in developing their phonic and reading skills. Don’t forget to click on the bugs!
In class we visit the book and read it together from the big screen. Children come in differentiated ability groups. Once we have read the book together and practised at home, the children then read to a fellow group member in pairs. It has truly been my pleasure to listen in.
The children are using their phonic strategies to build two and three letter words- supported by Mrs Lee and Mrs Templeton.
In addition January saw our new differentiated Literacy targets introduced. They are independent tasks which the children have the responsibility to complete and post their love hear to show that it is done. The targets are always related to the lesson’s focus but are independent task.

We then took our shape hunt round the inside of our school. We then looked at shapes with straight or curved sides too and made pictures using circles, squares, triangles and rectangles. The children named the shapes they used in their pictures and talked about their shape art.
The children then explored 2D shapes further using our magnetic shapes. They used the magnets and drew round shapes and patterns too.
Then Shakira noticed that these 2D shapes can join to make ones which stand up too- 3D shapes!

September – Literacy
Literacy – Active Literacy –
This month, we were excited to start Active Literacy, spelling with the phonemes we have been taught. To help us learn we have to say the word, break it up ( at = a t), make it with the magnetic letters, blend it and read it then finally write it in the elkinon boxes. We tried our best and had a go!

Each week we will be spelling using these strategies.
Our focus has also been on reading and enjoying traditional tales, learning about rhyming words, writing our first names and learning our class literacy routines.
