Finger prints – health and well being 23.2.23

In class, we were learning about finger prints and how police officers take finger prints at crime scenes. The children all took prints of their fingers and then looked at them closely to see if they had a whorl, arch or loop.

Health and well being 21.2.23

As part of our topic on People who help us we had a visit from our campus police officer PC McPike. He showed us his uniform and the equipment he uses to help him do his job. The children asked questions and got to try on some of his uniform.

Numeracy 6.2.23

We are continuing to learn about subtraction within 10 and 20 focussing on using number lines as a strategy to help us complete the calculations. The children have been using various resources to help with subtraction.

The children were also linking addition and subtraction by having to find the number which was one less and one more. Some children chose to work within 100!

Health and well being 6.2.23

This week is Kids Mental Health Week and we have been focussing on the people we have connections with both in our family and at school. We listened to the story The Invisible String by Patrice Karstif.

In class the children drew themselves and who they were connected to. Then they made a bracelet with 7 coloured beads each representing themselves and the six people they were connected to.

Literacy 2.2.23

The children have been enjoying looking and reading at books in our book corner. They have also enjoyed using technology to listen and watch stories on the iPads as they scan the QR codes.

Numeracy 2.2.23

This week the children have started subtraction within 10 & 20 using various resources to help them solve the calculations.

The children were engaging in using the large number squares to take away.

The children were learning that when you take away you get less by going down to the smaller numbers.

We had lots of fun playing playdough splat to help us subtract.

We also used concrete materials to help us in taking away. We wrote the subtraction calculation as well.

We also played snakes & ladders to help us with adding and subtraction.

Scottish Celebrations 27.1.23

In class the children made yummy biscuits with caramel as part of our Scots celebrations. They then wrote the instructions of how to make the biscuits.

The children also made tartan hats and recited their Scottish poem.

Numeracy   16.1.23

We are continuing to focus on addition within 10 & 20 with the children becoming more confident at using different strategies to complete addition calculations e.g. number lines, counting on & using our fingers. The children are learning to use number lines and create their own addition calculations.

Many of the children are beginning to answer the addition calculations mentally.

We have been learning about doubles through singing the Doubles Rap and completing various activities.

Health and well being    16.1.23

Over the next couple of weeks we will be focussing on a healthy lifestyle. As part of that the children had a visit from Snappy to help them brush their teeth properly. We will also be learning about healthy eating through a variety of activities over the coming weeks.

Literacy   16.1.23

This week the children are focussing on their first digraph (when it is 2 letters but it only makes one sound) – qu. It would be helpful at home if you could reinforce this.

The children are also being encouraged to spell more CVC words independently using a variety of resources. In this activity the children have to read the word on the lolly stick then spell it using the letters on the individual pegs.

12.12.22 Literacy

Today we were focussing on the phoneme – j so the children made jets using the Lego.

12.12.22 Numeracy

We are continuing to focus on addition this week with the children involved in learning through the stories of 3 to 10. The children actively layout different calculations which add up to a number e.g. story of 5.

Once the children have layout the calculation using the gems they write them down. We discuss the switchers e.g. 4+ 1 = 5 then 1 + 4 = 5.

12.12.22 Outdoor Learning

There will be no outdoor learning tomorrow – Tuesday 13th of December. Thanks.

Literacy 29.11.22

This week we are consolidating the phonemes already taught along with the common words.

Numeracy 29.11.22

This week we are continuing with add on 1 and 2 within 10 and 20 using various resources both at the teaching table and independently for our target or for Stripy’s job. Here are a few examples.

At home, it would be useful if you could use the number line to encourage your child to add on 1 or 2. Remember there are also online games which your child can play to help reinforce addition. These were placed in your child’s zippy wallet last week.

We have also been learning to count in 2s and 10s over the past few weeks and are now focusing on counting in 5s.

Important dates for Christmas

Christmas Party

Our Christmas party is on Friday 9th of December. You child has to come to school dress in their party clothes.

Christmas Nativity

The Christmas Nativity is on Thursday 15th of December at 9.45 and 1.45. We look forward to seeing you all there to enjoy our performance!

Numeracy 22.11.22

In class, we are learning to count in 10s to 100. We have also started adding on 1 within 10 using different games and concrete materials.

Outdoor learning – Log piles  22.11.22

This week with Mrs Conquer we found logs and twigs and made them into a log pile for the mini beasts. We had to measure the twigs and logs to be no longer than the length between our fingers and elbow. Once we had assembled the logs and twigs we added leaves and grass to the top of the log pile.

Literacy 16.11.22

The children have been practicing writing the common words in the sand, with wooden letters and using the letter stones over the past couple of weeks. Lots of fun ways to spell!

2d and 3d shapes 16.11.22

In class the children are learning about 2d and 3d shapes. They have been busy making models with the 3d shapes being able to discuss the 3d shapes used.

We also went outside and had a look for 2d and 3d shapes in our environment. The children spotted lots of shapes around our campus.

Spooky spelling and writing  26.10.22

In class, the children will be spelling Halloween words and writing their letters and numbers in our magic potion using magic wands!

Literacy learning in class   25.10.22

In class, the children are beginning to be encouraged to write simple sentences using the common words which are at the back of their blue homework jotter. They are also spelling CVC words using Active Literacy 5 fingered rule.

The children say the word, then make and break it with magnetic letters, blend the word by saying it, read the word and then write it .

Numeracy learning 25.10.22

Next week we will be looking at pattern in the world around us and also counting in 2s up to 20 then 30. It would be great if you could practice at home. Thanks.

Outdoor learning – Halloween & potions     25.10.22

Our focus for outdoor learning today was on Halloween. Mrs Conquer read the story – Funny Bones and the class joined in at the repetitive parts and discuss the characters.

Next, we went on a hunt for our magic wands! The children had to measure the stick first to make sure it wasn’t too big. It had to be smaller than the length between their elbow and the top of their middle finger.

Then we went on the hunt in groups to find items  for our potions. The children gathered the items and made spells using their magic wands. We added special water to our potions and cast our spells!

Outdoor Learning – Hot chocolate and marshmallows    11.10.22

Today we had lots of fun watching Mrs Baird make a small fire. She explained how to stay safe around a fire and what we need to make a fire. We weren’t allowed in the circle drawn on the ground.

Then we toasted marshmallows. We had to kneel down and stay safe next to the fire.  We discussed how the marshmallows looked and tasted e.g. burnt, yummy, delicious, gooey, sticky etc.

Then Mrs Baird used a Ghillie kettle to boil water over the fire and we had yummy hot chocolate. We counted 23 spoonfuls of hot chocolate for everyone!

27.9.22

Outdoor Learning – Session 4

Today we went down to the Barony Campus  Wee Forest to help measure the width and height of the trees.  We had lots of fun! The trees were planted last year  by pupils in Lochnorris and we had to check how much they had grown. The children had to look carefully to find the trees that had a silver disk and read the number. Then Mrs Baird helped the children measure the width and height using a measuring tape and special measuring instrument. The children enjoyed reading the numbers and helping.

Then we listened to the story The Woo in the Wild Woods.

Next, when we went back to class we drew pictures of our learning in the wee forest.

27.9.22

Numeracy homework

At home, it would be helpful if you could practice counting up to 30 with your child and then back from 20 to 0.

Homework – Primary 1

At home, could you please practice the sounds and actions each week for the letters stuck in your child’s blue book? Also, remember to practice reading the words at the back of your child’s blue jotter. Please can you ensure your child returns their folder each day in their bag. Many thanks.

Homework – Primary 2

It would be great if you could practice the words highlighted at the back of your child’s blue jotter each evening (Monday – Thursday). I will also be placing different games in your child’s zippy wallet each week. Many thanks.

Outdoor Learning – mapping

Today the children were learning to draw maps of their surrounding on whiteboards. They drew a cross then drew what was in front of them and what was behind them.

Next we listened to the pirate story – How the pirates turned the tide by Greta Yorke. We then followed Mrs Baird’s map and role played going round an island, going through a river, over a mountain and through long grass.

After this the children drew their on pirate map with chalk on the playground and added sticks, pine cones, small logs, stones etc. to make mountains, rivers, houses & animals. Here are examples of their work:
