Tales of Discovery – from the Creative Minds Team

Hello everyone. Many of you are already familiar with the work of Creative Minds through projects such as Paint a Thousand Words and our recent creative storytelling sessions. In light of COVID-19 restrictions, it is hard to know when we will be able to resume school visits but we remain at your disposal and have developed a range of creative inputs available on our Glow pages. In particular I would like to draw your attention to Tales of Discovery our creative storytelling resource pitched at P4 – P7 although the stories can be appreciated by all ages.

The attached pdf gives an overview of the resource, which offers a selection of audio books and activities to support reading, writing, talking and listening, with links to IDL and expressive arts. I would be particularly interested to hear from you as to how we can develop this resource and would welcome any feedback. I would also be happy to run online CLPL sessions on teams for anyone interested. Click the link below or find us via the Creative Minds Glow Tile (Drama, Literature and Media / Literacy and English). Please let me know if there are any navigation issues. I look forward to hearing from you.

‘Leading on Reading for Pleasure in primary and secondary schools’

Professional Learning Event: ‘Leading on Reading for Pleasure in primary and secondary schools’

The ES  Literacy and English team has organised the above webinar which will focus on equity in literacy. Details of the webinar and how to register  are given below.

Date and Time: Thursday 3rd September at 16:00

Audience: This webinar is for school leaders and leadership teams working in primary and secondary school contexts.

Summary: Long-term school closures earlier this year have potentially widened inequalities in the language and literacy experiences and outcomes of children and young people.  In this webinar we take a look at the importance of reading for pleasure to redress these inequalities.  For example, reading for pleasure promotes independent language and literacy learning, in addition to being beneficial for children and young people’s health and wellbeing.  However, promoting reading for pleasure is not as simple as it sounds.  In this webinar, we combine research insights and practical guidance to support primary and secondary school leaders to embed reading for pleasure in their school settings, in order to improve the experiences and outcomes of children and young people.

Speakers:      Dr Sarah McGeown, Senior Lecturer, University of Edinburgh

Rachael Laburn, School Communities Manager, Scottish Book Trust will co-present the session.

Here we Are: Notes for Living on Planet Earth by Oliver Jeffers  – Re-connecting with each other in the school community

Literacy Transition Project produced by CLPE (Centre for Literacy in Primary Education)

Supporting the children in your school community to re-connect with each other and re-engage with school life , the Literacy Team would like to highlight an excellent free resource that has been created by CLPE Literacy experts devised for a whole school to work together using a single text, Here We Are: Notes for Living on Planet Earth by Oliver Jeffers (HarperCollins)  to support the transition curriculum as pupils return to school.  It has been designed to encourage a sense of community across the entire school, to reflect on the last few months, and also help your whole school look forward to the future in a positive way.

There are teaching notes to support you introduce the unit and at the end of the unit there is an celebration activity planned where pupils, staff and parents can share their own notes for living on Planet Earth, supporting everyone to move forward positively.  It has been differentiated for specific sessions from Early- Second Level.

This is a literacy-based unit and aims to support reading and writing for pleasure across the school. The age-appropriate activities will provide opportunities for children to use writing for a range of purposes including personal response as well as shared reading and meaning-making.  The notes help you to place the literacy learning at the heart of your recovery curriculum and the planned activities will also

  • provide a framework for children to re-engage socially with each other and their wider community;
  • suggest opportunities to engage positively with the outdoor environment;
  • stimulate thinking and talk about world events and the impact of these events on individuals and the wider world;
  • provide a safe forum to share thoughts, concerns, ideas and personal responses;
  • use art and writing to help children respond personally to experiences they have had

We have uploaded the CFE guidance and a video of the book being read onto our Other Literacy Resources glow tile.

You can register to receive the unit here https://clpe.org.uk/aboutus/news/back-school-support-september-clpewordsfortheworld.
