Day 2 of Kilmarnock Academy Technical Department Architecture workshop with David McPike.

Today the pupils used survey drawings to produce elevations of the old school building.

They also had a chance to design and visualise their own spaces.

We are looking forward to our third and final visit next week.

Architecture Workshop with David McPike

David McPike, an ex pupil of ours, is a 6th year student of Architecture at Glasgow School of Art and has volunteered his time to complete an Architecture project with our Higher Graphic Communication pupils.  Together they will survey the school building and use CAD software to create a 3D map of the local area.

Rapid Response – Thursday 2nd June 2016

On Thursday 2nd June S2 pupils took part in our annual Rapid Response Engineering Challenge.  Pupils have spent the last 4 weeks building up to the day learning about the work of civil engineers and the vital role they play in our lives.  Pupils then had to imagine what our homes, towns and cities would be like if natural disasters struck.  To this end, pupils completed a series of challenges in groups during the challenge for example,  purifying water, building shelters and transporting water.  The event was a great success with beautiful weather and all pupils enjoyed the event immensely.

S3 & S4 Theatre Trip – Citizen’s Theatre Glasgow

S3 and S4 pupils experienced a very successful and rewarding trip to the Citizen’s Theatre Glasgow on Wednesday 1st June. The play was ‘Observe the Sons of Ulster marching towards the Somme.’ The play followed the exploits a group of young recruits from Northern Ireland who volunteered to fight in the First World War. The pupils behaved well in the theatre and were a credit to the school.

Pupil comments after the production.

“it was really interesting”.

“We learned about the recruits’ thoughts and feelings.”

“Thought the acting was brilliant.”

“Special effects were really good.”

France/ Belgium Trip Saturday 11th June 2016

The departure date is just over a week away. Could parents/carers and students please take note of the following:

All students should be at the front gate of the school for 08.00 ( that’s 8 in the morning) for a prompt departure.

  • Suitcases and holdalls will be put in the luggage compartment of the bus and will not be accessible until we reach our hotel outside Paris on Sunday evening.

  • All students should have a backpack or small holdall containing a change of clothes and toiletries to take with them onto the ferry. This is very important as space is limited in the cabins.

  • Food may be taken onto the bus, but over indulgence by some students in the past has led to illness. We will make at least two comfort breaks during the six hour journey south to Hull.

  • Thirty pounds (£30) will be sufficient for the UK parts of the journey. This is only a recommendation.

  • One hundred and fifty euros (150) is suggested for the European part of the trip. Again, this is only a recommendation. Monies will be provided to students for food and snacks during visits to Disney, Arras and Brugge. Packed lunches will also be provided during fieldtrips.
  • Students should be made aware that some mobile networks can charge extortionate tariffs for using phones abroad.

  • Suitable clothing should be packed, especially old trainers or shoes for the fieldtrips as it can get muddy if it rains. A light, waterproof jacket is also advised.

  • Sun cream/block should also be a priority. Staff will have a supply in the event of anyone  forgetting , but it will be factor 50.

  •   No passport required as the students are travelling on a group passport.

  • We are all looking forward to the trip and I would like to thank everyone, parents/carers and pupils,  on behalf of the staff going on the trip for your cooperation and support during the long preparation process.  Mr J. Reid

EAST AYRSHIRE YOUTH THEATRE – Made in Dagenham

EAYT Made in Dagenham

Congratulations are in order to cast and crew of Made in Dagenham (The Musical) who performed on Friday and Saturday at The Palace Theatre. The show recreated the extraordinary true story of the female Ford Motor machinists in Dagenham who fought for equal pay for all women back in 1968. Well done to our girls at Kilmarnock Academy, Morgan Allan, Rowan Sivewright, Hannah Taylor and Morgan Walley. Special mention to Andrew Maxwell who was outstanding in numerous roles! Another example of the breadth of talent within our school community.
