P7F Week Beginning 17.1.22

This week for maths, we have been working on calculating the perimeter. We found it quite challenging at times and are continuing to practice our addition skills to help us with this. Next week we will be moving onto learning about the area of a shape.

We are coming to the end of our novel, “Carrie’s War.” We have been practicing reading aloud and focusing on reading with expression, using the punctuation to help us, and also using strategies such as using syllables to read unfamiliar words. Next week we hope to finish the novel and find out Carrie’s big secret!

We are also coming near the end of our World War 2 topic. This week we have learned about The Battle of Britain, D-Day and VE Day. We also learned about spies and espionage and spent time today learning about different coding techniques and trying to break codes. We really enjoyed using morse code, anagrams, ciphers and messages with patterns! Next Friday we will have an end of topic assessment to see how much we have learned during this topic.

We have been participating and preparing for the “If I were an engineer” competition and this week we developed our inventions and wrote a letter explaining how they work and why they should be chosen. We are really proud of our work and will be sending the entries off soon… Fingers crossed!

Week beginning 17.01.22

by Taylor and Ethan

This week we had fun with the primary engineer competition where we had to create our own invention to help solve problems around the world.

We also wrote a letter to an engineer and it was fun.

It was fun when we worked in groups to create a WW2 Air Raid Poster.

This week we learned more about negative numbers in maths.

This Wednesday with Miss Baillie we painted to make a Chinese new year drum.

Remember to log-on to educationcity each week to complete the homework tasks.  It would also be most helpful if all pupils can log on to their Glow account /team page regularly, from home, to help commit passwords to memory.

Next week, our Scots verse poem will be given out to begin learning for our in-school competition.  Look out for the sheets coming home.  Our poem, ‘To a Mouse’ by Robert Burns will also be on the Team page.

Have a great Friday and lovely weekend!

January in p3/2

This term, we’ve started with a focus on Engineering and STEM (science.technologhy.engineering.maths)

As a school, we’re taking part in a competition with Primary Engineer. The children have to come up with a problem that they can solve with a design of their own.

To encourage the thinking that could help, we’ve been doing a range of challenges in class. Creating, counting, building, experimenting and designing. The children have been enjoying these activities and working really well with their peers.

Monday 17th February P2/1

Last week we were really busy getting back into a routine after the holidays and working on being engineers. The children really enjoyed constructing dens for the Gruffalo and then later in the week we used various construction to build a structure or item of choice. We set about building a ship, a pirate ship with a large hold for lots of treasure. Whilst some children began building a bridge for the ship to pass under. Amongst the other items that were constructed were; a large school and playground, houses, driveway and garage, a nearby tower, supermarket, telephone, water park and skate park. The children really immersed themselves in projects of their choice and took on the role of being engineers really seriously and discussed their models when they were complete to explain characteristics about their designs.

We hope you enjoying looking at our buildings.

Language this week

Nemo – spelling words  because, week, keep, when     diagraph  ou.

Dory – spelling words    was, went, his    sound  h

Why not do a scavenger hunt around the house or in your books and see if you can spot any words or items with these sounds?

Also look out for new activities on Education City.

Maths

Starfish – counting in 10s to 100, 100s to 1000, exploring the 100 square for patterns and addition calculations to 20.

Octopus – counting and sequencing numbers to 20 and addition calculations up to 10.

Have fun learning.

P6 week beginning 10th January 2022

It’s been a busy first full week back in 2022.  We have been discussing and making New Year Resolutions and setting learning targets for Term 3.

The main focus has been on the Primary Engineer competition ‘If You Were an Engineer, What Would You Do?’  Firstly, we used visualisation to help us draw a picture of an engineer. Next, we looked at the different types of engineering jobs that exist and had a think about what engineering jobs will be like in the future.  Our next task was to critique the design of a chosen everyday object to help us focus on what works well and how a design could be improved.  Next week, we are going to put our design thinking caps on and come up with an idea for a new invention to help solve a problem.

On Tuesday we started our class novel ‘The Last Wolf’ by Michael Morpurgo as our Literacy focus.  The story is set in the Highlands of Scotland in the 1700s.  We are enjoying finding out about the main character, Robbie McLeod.

We participated in our first indoor PE session on Thursday.  We are focusing on indoor hockey and we learned the correct grip and how to perform a push pass.  Also on Thursday we had a recap of the songs and dances we have been learning for our Aladdin show.  We were a bit rusty, but got there in the end!

P7F Week Beginning 10.1.22

This week we met Sir Stephen Hillier over Teams. Based on the info we gathered, we wrote a biography and we are learning about Tim Berners-Lee. P7F are presenting an act in groups. We were reading Carrie’s War ourselves for a wee while  and what we read we had to write a summary of it. P7F done a maths assessment about symmetry this week. We were entering a competition for the best inventionwins and the lucky winner might get their invention made by scientists!

Week beginning 10.01.22 – Welcome back P7J

Thursday 13th January 2022

Welcome back Primary 7J!

This week we have been settling back in to school life and reminding ourselves of the daily routines we follow.  Lots of names have been going up on the Recognition Board for demonstrating good manners and our class currency has been flowing, with pupils earning tokens for great effort.

A big focus has been on the ‘If you were an engineer, what would you do?’ competition.  Pupils have already shared some creative ideas and next week they will be asked to draw and annotate their final designs.

Negative numbers have been introduced during maths time; we now all know how the number line extends to include numbers less than zero. We have found negative numbers being used in everyday life when dealing with money and bank balances, reading thermometers and when measuring above/below sea level. Next week we will further develop our understanding of how to add and subtract when negative numbers are involved.

Please look out for homework on educationcity next week and spelling words, posted on the class team page.

Here is a  sample of what else we have been up to, written by Codey and Brooke.

By Codey and Brooke

This week we met Sir Stephen Hillier over teams, we got to talk to and interview him, we asked questions about his life and how he started his career. It was really exciting to meet a former R.A.F chief.

We also did an engineering task where we thought about daily life problems and how we could fix them. We got to look at other peoples’ solutions to problems they have fixed.

For our topic on World War 2, we did a lesson on ‘The Blitz’. This included some art based on the London Blitz, air raid shelters, as well as A.R.P wardens.

Young Persons’ Free Bus Travel Communication to parents

Young Persons’ Free Bus Travel

Free bus travel for young people in Scotland

I am writing to update you on an exciting new scheme which is due to launch on 31 January 2022. From this date all young people living in Scotland aged between 5 and 21 years will be eligible for free bus travel within Scotland.

Due to the current COVID-19 mitigations this new scheme will be introduced gradually over the coming months and we will initially only accept application forms for pupils who will require their card to make essential journeys from 31 January 2022.  All other eligible applicants will be encouraged to apply at a later date when the situation with the pandemic has improved.

What does this mean for your child?

Your child will be able to access free bus travel on registered bus services across Scotland including a very limited number of local cross-border services from the south of Scotland into northern England.

How will my child obtain free bus travel?

Young people aged between 5 and 21 years old will need to apply for a National Entitlement Card or a Young Scot National Entitlement Card (Kidz Kard). You can apply for a card directly by visiting https://getyournec.scot/nec/or you can apply through the school, by selecting one of the 3 forms highlighted below which are assigned to age groups.

If you apply directly to https://getyournec.scot/nec/  you should not apply via the school.  Using the online, self-service website at https://getyournec.scot/nec/  is the quickest and surest way to get your travel-enabled card.  If you cannot use the website please contact East Ayrshire Council’s Customer Services by emailing:  nec@east-ayrshire.gov.uk.

If you are applying via the schools you should complete the online form for your child’s age group.  The forms will be available on the school website from Wednesday 12 January 2022.

You have the choice of three forms.

  • Form 1 if your child is aged between 5 and 10 years old. This form allows you to apply for a Kidz Kard for your child.  You can opt to have the free bus travel element.  Please note there is no requirement for your child to have their photograph on this card.
  • Form 2 if your child is between the age of 11 and 15 years old. This form allows you to apply for a National Entitlement Card for your child.  The form gives you the option of having the free bus travel element added.  It also allows you to have the Young Scot branding added to your child’s card.  This will give your child access to the Young Scot information services and discounts and special offers in Scotland, the UK and some European countries. For further information about the Young Scot branding please go to https://getyournec.scot/nec/
  • Form 3. If your child is aged 16 and over they can apply for the National Entitlement Card themselves.  They can choose to add the free bus travel element and the Young Scot branding.  This will give your child access to the Young Scot information services and discounts and special offers in Scotland, the UK and some European countries. For further information about the Young Scot branding please go to https://getyournec.scot/nec/.  They can also opt to have the PASS Hologram added to their card.  This hologram acts as a proof of age for your child.

The forms will be available on your child’s school website from Wednesday 12 January 2022.  You or your child should only apply at this time if you require the card to make essential journeys from 31 January 2022.  Applications received up to the 14 January 2022 will be processed immediately. Applications made after the 14 January 2022 will be included in the next phase and depending on COVID-19 mitigations we anticipate that these will be processed timeously.

How will my child’s card work for free travel?

Your child’s card will have an electronic chip inside it. When a child gets on a bus, the bus driver will ask them to tap the card against a card reader. The card reader will tell the bus driver if the child has free bus travel enabled on their card or not.

Children under 16 years old will need their parent/guardian to apply on their behalf and provide approval for free bus travel to be enabled on their child’s card. This request for approval is included in forms 1 and 2 above.

Young people aged 16 years and over will be able to apply for free bus travel themselves. This request for approval is included in form 3 above.

Children under 5 years old can already travel on buses for free. They will not need to apply for a card.

What happens when I complete the form and give my approval for my child to receive a Card with free bus travel?

Once you have given approval, the school will arrange for a card to be issued to your child/children.

By agreeing to my child receiving a card and free bus travel what does it really mean?

By giving your approval, you will be agreeing to your child receiving a card which entitles them to free bus travel.

It will allow your child to travel for free on any registered bus service operating across the whole of Scotland, as well as a very limited number of local cross border services from the south of Scotland into northern England.

What happens if I change my mind and want to stop my child having free bus travel?

If you change your mind at any time while your child remains under 16 years of age, you can apply to have the free travel product removed from your child’s card. If you have applied for the card via the school you should contact the school your child attends to have the travel element removed.  If you have applied for your card via https://getyournec.scot/nec/ and wish to have the travel element removed you should contact East Ayrshire Council’s Customer Services by emailing nec@east-ayrshire.gov.uk.

My child already has a National Entitlement Card.  How do arrange for the Free Travel element to be added.

You will need to apply for a new card either by completing one of the above forms which will be available on the school website from Wednesday 12 January 2022 or by going direct to https://getyournec.scot/nec/

Additional Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Why haven’t you advertised the scheme?

We want all 5-21 year olds living in Scotland to benefit from free bus travel. However given the situation with the pandemic, we do not want to heavily market the scheme at a time when people are being actively discouraged from travelling unless they really need to. That said, it is important that children and young people who rely on the bus for essential travel such as to work, where they can’t work from home, or for the purposes of education, care and health and so on are able to apply to access free bus travel from 31 January. That’s why we have made information available on how to apply. The national marketing campaign will follow in due course.

Why are you launching the scheme at a time when there are additional Covid19 restrictions?

We want all 5-21 year olds living in Scotland to benefit from free bus travel. In particular at this time it is important that those who rely on the bus for essential travel such as to work, where they can’t work from home, or for the purposes of education, care and health and so on are able to apply to access free bus travel from 31 January. Scottish Government advice regarding the pandemic should be followed at all times.

Will Council offices be able to process in person applications given the situation with the pandemic? Applications can be made online at https://getyournec.scot/nec/ or via the forms highlighted above that will be available on the school website.

If applications are open, why are people being encouraged not to apply for the scheme?

It is important that we all do our bit to stay safe and protect our NHS. Therefore we are encouraging people not to travel unless it is essential. However, we recognise that many children and young people under the age of 22 still have to make essential journeys by bus and it is important that they can still apply to access free bus from 31 January, recognising that not travelling is not an option for them.

I don’t want to throw away my old National Entitlement Card (NEC)/Young Scot NEC. Can it be recycled?

Yes it can. If you are getting a new card and would like your old one to be recycled, please send it to: Transport Scotland Card Recycling Buchanan House, 58 Port Dundas Road Glasgow G4 0H
