P4 – Week beginning 1.11.21

Hi Primary 4,

We had a fantastic week last week learning all about COP26 and about the devastating effects of climate change. We learned all about our carbon footprint. Ask us about our 3 personal goals that we set to reduce our own carbon footprint. See if the whole family can stick to it!

We have also been learning basketball with Mr Strachan and having an excellent time learning new skills. Mr Ballantyne has joined our class for the next few weeks and he is very excited to work with Primary 4. We will continue to be very welcoming and look forward to working with Mr Ballantyne over the coming weeks. I We were lucky to have the opportunity for Joe and Kate to complete a visual arts and storytelling workshop. We had lots of fun and learned about imagery and used music to help us picture a story in our heads about fairies.

Have a fantastic week,

Miss Baillie, Mrs Ferguson & Mr Ballantyne.

P7J Weekly Round-up 5th November

We have had an action packed week in P7J.  This week we welcomed Miss Little to our class, she will be with us for the next four weeks.

We also had visitors from the Creative Minds team, Joe and Kate.  They took us on the story journey of The Selkie Bride: we looked at maps of Scotland and the islands, listened and responded to some theme music and created detailed observational drawings of shells, drift wood and rocks found on the beach. Everyone found this to be an enjoyable and calming afternoon.

Lots of active learning was taking place for numeracy with the focus on adding and subtracting decimal fractions.  We’re all becoming much more confident and accurate when handling decimal numbers.

Cop26 has been a main area for discussion and we have all taken part in activities to help identify more sustainable ways of living.  Ask us about small changes we can all make at home to help the environment!

Plastic pollution was the chosen theme for all groups when challenged to create a short film using iMovie.  Each group was tasked with including three different types of camera shot to produce an attention grabbing film.  Lots of fun was had and I must thank all the pupils for teaching me lots more about how to use iMovie!

Next week, we look forward to a visit from Lorna Sloan who will be helping us work towards the John Muir Award.  We will also be learning about Remembrance Day amongst many other things.

Have a lovely weekend,

Mrs Johnstone

Hurlford Primary School to see artwork displayed in front of world leaders at COP26

We are delighted to announce that:

  • Hurlford Primary pupils have been announced as winners in Royal Bank’s MoneySense ClimateSavers Top Trumps competition
  • Both 11 year-old’s design to be exhibited in front of delegates and world leaders throughout the COP26 Conference

Two pupils from Hurlford Primary School will see their artwork exhibited on the world stage at the COP26 climate conference after being announced as  winners in Royal Bank of Scotland’s MoneySense ClimateSavers Top Trumps competition.

In the run up to COP26, the bank’s MoneySense Climate Savers Top Trumps competition tasked school pupils with designing an exclusive set of the iconic playing cards promoting sustainable behaviours.

Across the UK and through its NatWest, Royal Bank of Scotland and Ulster Bank brands, entrants were asked to use their creativity to design their own versions of the cards that show the everyday actions young people can take such as switching to a reusable water bottle or cycling to school.

Alfie and Cara  saw off competition from over 2,000 entrants and impressed judges with their entries.

Alfie and Cara will be two of 26 winners to have their cards featured in the new Top Trumps deck, shown to delegates and world leaders throughout the COP26 Conference in Glasgow.

Alfie and Cara were each sent a goody bag containing prizes including a pair of Adidas Parley trainers – made from recycled ocean plastics, a Top Trumps bundle and 30 sets of the competition cards to share with their friends and family.

P6: Week Beginning 01.11.21

It’s been another busy week! The focus again has been on climate change linked to the COP26 Conference in Glasgow.

This week we have been learning about saving energy, our carbon footptint and the problems of plastic waste.  We worked in trios to find information and share our learning with our peers.  It made us think about the small changes we can all make to reduce our waste by reusing and reducing as much as possible. We also took part in quality discussions about Climate Actions which gave us the opportunity to express our views and opinions.

Yesterday, we had great fun at Newmilns ski slope.  We learned how to change direction by using the snowplough technique.  The instructors set us a challenge to ski through the gap between two marker cones.  Some of us found it quite tricky, but we all gave it a go.

We were very excitied yesterday at our Disney Aladdin rehearsal as we found out which parts we would be playing.  We can’t wait to start learning our lines, songs, dance routines and stage directions…it’s going to be a whole new world!!

P7F Week Beginning 1.11.21

What a busy week in P7F! Mrs Barclay has joined our class this week and we have wowed her with our hard working attitude . In maths we have been focusing on rounding and have pushed ourselves to round up to the nearest  million.

COP26 has been a focus again this week and we  have deepened our understanding of climate change. We were lucky enough to take part in a Creative Minds workshop and will be using this knowledge to write our own myths about the Kelpies.

P6 Week beginning 25.10.21

Primary 6 have been working very hard on a range of lessons and activities relating to the up and coming COP26 Conference.  We have been finding out about different climates around the world.  There are six main climate zones – did you know that Scotland is in the Temperate Zone?  In art we  used visualisation to help us create a collage on how we see climate change.

In another activity we had to use our detective skills to find evidence of climate change in a range of photographs, graphs and data – it was quite tricky but we helped each other look for clues.

Today was very exciting as it was Hallowe’en also known as Killieween!. We enjoyed coming to school dressed up and taking part in lots of Hallowe’en activities and games in the classroom.

Child Disability Payment from 22nd November 2021 in Scotland

Child Disability Payment from 22nd November 2021 in Scotland

Scotland’s Child Disability Payment opens for new applications across Scotland from 22 November 2021 following a pilot launched in July in other areas of Scotland.

This is the first of the application based disability benefits to be introduced by the Scottish Government and replaces the UK Government’s Disability Living Allowance for children.

Any new claims from 22/11/21 will be for Child Disability Payment for children with a Scottish postcode.

Existing claims of Disability Living Allowance (DLA) for children aged 15-17yrs will gradually be transferred over to Child Disability Payment by spring 2022.  The remainder of claims are expected to be transferred by spring 2023.

Parents/Carers will be contacted at the time when this process will be carried out for their child.  You will not need to re-apply at this time and payments will remain the same during transfer.  Your payments will be from Social Security Scotland instead of the Department for Work and Pensions.
