Tuesday 7th December 2021

Hello everyone,

We have put the Christmas tree up in P 3-2 and we are taking turns  turns opening the advent calendar. Last week we learned about St Andrew’s Day  and we made thistles and tasted porridge. We also added fruit into  the porridge and loads of the children really enjoyed trying honey in it too. We wrote a story about a Christmas tree  and we have been learning  about safe and unsafe substances and how to keep ourselves safe in different situations.

This week the common words are ;

apples- our, down, off    bananas -was, just ,are   pears- the an is. Remember to practice reading the common words on the card in your reading book.

The new phoneme this week is oy .See how many oy words you can share with a grown up.

In Numeracy we have been working hard on addition and place value of the numbers up to 100 as well as data handling. We can count in ones really well but counting backwards from a number is much harder. See if you can practise counting backwards from 20 to 0 or from e,g 40-30 or 30-20. Counting in 10’s helps us to add and subtract 10 from a number quickly.

Today was gym day so here are some photos( tried to get everyone in !

Tuesday 21st December – Santa comes to Hurlford !!

As we are unable to have Santa visit our school this year, Santa has agreed to come into the Community to wave to our children in our ECC and Primary.

On Tuesday 21st December from 5pm to approx. 6pm, Santa will be driven along the following route to wave to our pupils. Staff will also come along too and join in the fun!

Why not come out into your garden or pavement and wave to Santa as he goes by? If Santa, is not visiting your street, please find a safe place to stand along the route and wave. Please note that Santa and staff will not be able to stop.

It is very important that everyone remembers social distancing and only stand in your family bubble.

The route is as follows:

SANTA ROUTE MAP

  • Depart Hurlford Primary, Union Street at 5pm
  • Turn left onto Riccarton Road
  • Turn left onto Dewalden Road
  • Then onto Morris Crescent
  • Turn left onto Blair Avenue
  • Then right onto Mauchline Road
  • Then along Kerrmuir Avenue
  • Turn right up Drumleyhill Drive
  • Then right onto Richardson Avenue
  • Then right onto Kerrmuir Avenue
  • Then right onto Liffnock Avenue
  • Right onto Mauchline Road
  • Left onto Academy Street
  • Right onto Union Street
  • Arrive Hurlford Primary.

This event has been carefully risk assessed and has been organised by the school, in discussion with East Ayrshire’s Events & Resilience Officer.

We hope that this event will bring some festive cheer to the community and that you will enjoy waving to Santa!

P4 – Week beginning 22.11.21 & 29.11.21

We have been very busy in P4 the last couple of weeks. For Children in Need we had an extremely busy day as were called upon by the police to help them solve a missing persons case. Poor Pudsey Bear got lost on his way home and we were asked to help find him. They gave us copies of the clothes he was wearing and the class made missing posters using lots of fantastic adjectives to describe Pudsey so that people knew who to look out for. And thanks to the marvelous posters Pudsey was luckily found! Phew! 🙂

We have been working hard on adding this Term and learning new strategies to help us add big numbers. We have also been learning how to tell the time and could practice this at home.

We also said goodbye to Mr Ballantyne last week as his short stay with us is over. We had lots of fun getting to know him and he taught us lots of new things. We will miss him and wish him well in the future! He said that he really enjoyed his time with Primary 4 and is sad to be leaving.

We are now in the run up to Christmas and will be doing lots of Christmas activities to get ready to celebrate the holiday.

Have a fantastic week everyone,

Miss Baillie & Mrs Ferguson.

Monday 6th December

Hello everyone, I hope you all had a lovely weekend and that all your Elves are behaving. Last week  it was exciting opening our advent calendars, putting up the decorations and exploring things we like to do in winter. For health and wellbeing we enjoyed the story, ‘Zog and the flying doctor’ by Julia Donaldson and will examine the use and safekeeping of medicines. Our role play this week will be a doctor’s surgery to support our study of medicines.

Language this week:

Nemo Group

common words – very, took, fast, there

digraph – aw like crawl, hawk

Dory Group – There will be a new word list with reading books also to learn.

common words – if, for, on

phonemes f and o

Please try to play some games with these words and maybe do a scavenger hunt to find items with these sounds. I will add activities to support this week’s work on Education City.

Thanks for your help with all language work, it really supports the work that we do in class.

Maths

We are continuing to explore place value, number patterns and sequences. The children last week were working very hard to double and half numbers.

Octopus Group – continue to work on numbers to 20

Starfish Group – continue to work on numbers to 100

Please have fun counting in 2s, 5s and 10s anytime you get the opportunity, climbing the stairs is always a good place to do this.

Can you spot numbers in your street? What do you notice about the patterns of house numbers on either side of the street?

Have fun this week.

P1L and Mrs Cuthbertson – Fri 3rd Dec 2021

December already! Things are becoming quite exciting for our Primary 1 children. We have been learning all about the Nativity story, and of course have had daily visits from our Elf. On Wednesday he climbed up onto our Xmas tree. On Thursday he ate some of our sweets and Mrs Cuthbertson’s snack!! On Friday he decided to go fishing in our sink.  We can’t wait to see what he does next week.

We have been so busy exploring measure, common words and phonics. We investigated ‘Ll’ and had fun making Lions. Our Lego table has been very busy and the children have had fun decorating our tuff tray Xmas trees. Our class story was ‘One Snowy Night’ with Percy the Park Keeper. We really enjoyed the story and have been making our own Snowy Night Display for our classroom.

Next week our phonic is ‘Ff’ and our common words are ‘it,for,on’. We will be learning all about Christmas traditions and will make our own decorations. We are really excited about the School Xmas Lunch on Wednesday.

I hope you all have a lovely weekend,

Mrs Cuthbertson xxx

3.12.21- This week in P7J…

As always, we have had a busy week, packed with a variety of different learning experiences.

Numeracy

This week’s focus has been on long multiplication.  We can all use the grid method to solve calculations like 72 x 938 but now we also know how to use long multiplication, where we solve 2 x 938 and then 70 x 938 before adding both answers together, as shown in the calculation below.  The challenging part has been remembering to place zero when multiplying by the tens digit!

Literacy

We have looked at autobiographies and biographies to find out their similarities and differences.  Then we had a go at using our own words to paraphrase  information about John Muir to create the introduction of a biography about him.  Did you know he was a keen conservationist who was born in Scotland?  Ask us more about him!

We also read the next chapter of ‘Dark Isle’ and worked with our learning partners to summarise the story so far and make predictions about what will happen next.

Interdisciplinary Learning

More learning has taken place about rationing during World War Two; we created timelines to show which items were rationed and when – soap, clothing, petrol and coal were rationed, as well as some foods and other items.  Our math’s skills were tested when challenged to design a ‘Victory Garden’ where we had to draw a plan using the scale 1cm = 1m.  The aim was to ensure as much space to grow vegetables as possible, as well as space for: chickens, rabbits, fruit trees, a green house and an Anderson shelter.  Look out for some photos of our super designs next week.

We also discussed what it would have been like to be evacuated to the countryside, like more than 3 million children were.  Everyone has been taking a turn to help contribute to our display which will show two evacuees,  this has required drawing and painting skills being put to good use.

Take care everyone,

I hope to see you all back next week.

Last week in P7J (22nd-25th Nov)

by Jamie and Bethany

On Monday we did spelling words and Prime numbers in maths.  We both liked the maths.

On Tuesday we did an unclean water experiment with filter paper, big pebbles and small pebbles. The filter paper worked the most and left the water cleanest.

On Wednesday we read our novel Dark Isle, chapter 15, and in the story Morag has went to be a maid to Mephista the leader of the castle.  We were also roleplaying as people in ww2 buying food while rationing.

Today (Thursday)  we have done a newspaper report on rationing, Also, we roleplayed each countries’ reactions to ww2 starting.

P6 Week beginning: 29.11.21

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas!

This week we have been finding out about the meaning of Advent.  We looked at Advent wreaths and crowns and learned that the five candles represent Hope, Peace, Love, Joy and the Birth of Jesus.  After that, we had fun making our own Advent calendars to hang up at home.

For literacy, we have been writing recounts. This week our task was to write about the day in the life of a Victorian kitchen maid.  Some of us even wrote in Victorian style handwriting.

In maths we have been finishing our unit on multiplying and dividing and will be moving on to Fractions and Decimals.  Our tables facts are going to come in very useful!  We have also been learning all about the properties of 2D shapes with Miss Baillie and Mrs Canning.

On Thursday we had our second-last skiing and tubing session.  It was great fun learning how to change direction using the snowplough technique. In the afternoon we learned a new song and all the actions during our Disney Aladdin rehearsal.  We are definitely one jump ahead…
