P6: week beginning 17th April 2023

Welcome back, I hope you all had a lovely Easter break and are looking forward to our final term.

Primary 6 have had a busy and productive first week back. Here’s what we’ve been doing.

In Literacy, we read the next couple of chapters in our class novel. We found out one of the main characters had a secret talent. We then wrote about a special talent we have or would like to have and how we discovered it. For spelling, the focus was words with the suffixes _sion and _ssion. We also had lots of discussions around news items and our space topic.

This week in Numeracy, we began learning about percentages and explored the link with fractions and decimals. We all gave it 100% effort! We took our learning outdoors for our maths focus which was using measuring equipment to find the length and width of various objects. We had to accurately measure in metres, centimetres and millimetres.

We continued our Space topic and this week. We learned about different types of galaxies. We then moved on to exploring the Solar System. We now know the names and order of the planets, how they orbit the sun and the huge distances across the solar system. It was a lot to get our head around. We used collage skills and worked with a partner to create a picture of the planets. Today, we are designing and making models of the solar system using coat hangers, string and various art resources.

For PE, we are practising for the P6 and P7 Sports Championship. We will be using throwing, jumping and running skills in 5 different events. We all enjoyed a sunny WOW session on Wednesday. Hopefully this good weather continues.

Enjoy the rest of the week and have a lovely weekend.

P5 Week Beginning 17th April 2023

Welcome back to Term 4!
I hope everyone had a lovely Easter holiday and you’re ready for the last term of P5, can you believe it!?

This week has been all about settling back in and having a fresh start, which means new topics, new class novel and new challenges! Here’s a summary of our week:

In maths, we have been continuing our learning on times tables. So far we have covered the 2, 4, 5, 10 and 3 times tables. Please continue playing games to practice these at home this will help with the work in class! We also began to investigate compass points and directions and enjoyed using our knowledge to locate places on a map of Scotland.

In literacy, we started our new novel by Michael Morpurgo called “The Last Wolf”. We used the cover and blurb to make predictions about the book and read chapter 1. We discovered that part of the story is set in the Highlands of Scotland and are intrigued by the mysterious setting! Chapter 1 also mentioned family trees which the pupils found interesting. I wonder what will happen next!? This week we enjoyed doing some free writing to explore our creativity. The pupils love doing free writing as it allows them the chance to put their learning into practice but using their own ideas.

In other areas, we started our topic about “The Scottish Wars of Independence.” We asked our Big Questions and then used maps to investigate significant places for our topic. We also explored timelines and created a timeline of significant events. This week we also learned about the composer Rachmaninoff and discussed his style of music. We have also been finding out about the Eat Well guide and looking at the different food groups in our diets.

The sun has been shining and we’ve had a lovely first week back. Hope you all have a super weekend!

Design a Crown Competition

If they wish, each child can design a  homemade crown to wear on the 9th May.

It can be made of anything you like e.g. paper mache, recyclable materials, card, etc.

Adults can  help too.

Each class will have a Crown parade on Tuesday 9th May as part of our Coronation celebrations.

There will be a winning prize for each class.

Have fun!

P4S w/c 27.3.23

Happy Friday Everyone,

I hope that all is well and that you are looking forward to the Easter Holiday.

This week in P4S we have been learning about Easter and Holy Week, the week running up to Easter Sunday.  Pupils have had an added interest in the story of Easter because some of the class were involved in yesterday’s Easter Assembly.  Children put together the story in a sequencing activity which was trickier than they thought it would be but everyone did really well to complete the task.

In Numeracy this week, we have continued our learning about Data Handling which involved creating our very own surveys and asking pupils from around the school what their thoughts were on different topics such as favourite desserts, colours and shops to name a few. Pupils have been able to put the data in to Tally Charts and Bar Graphs and some Pictographs were also created.

Our Writing lesson involved Persuasive Writing and why it is important to use the Green Cross Code to stay safe whilst crossing the road. There were some very interesting pieces of writing this week which had very convincing arguments.

Yesterday, everyone made a 3-D Easter Hen and went home with a shiny egg inside it.  Sadly, I was so busy helping with Sellotape and staples that I didn’t have an extra pair of hands to take photos.  I’m sure though, that the finished articles when brought home gave you a good idea of the fun we had creating the models.

May I take this opportunity to wish you all a lovely and peaceful Easter,

Best wishes,

Miss Steedman

Primary 2 Friday 31st March

In literacy this week we have been revising many of the phonemes and the children are progressing really well and now using their knowledge of sounds to decipher words and begin to spell some simple words with growing independence.

In maths, this week we have been subtracting  from 20 game using Numicon and number lines. The children are still having fun applying their problem-solving skills using the theme Goldilocks and the three bears exploring measure and volume.

As this is Food Fortnight for health and wellbeing, we will have been exploring the children’s understanding of healthy eating. Last week we explored where bananas come from and the type of climate, they need to grow so by contrast this week we have been looking at growing carrots and what dishes we could make using carrots. Big Cook Little Cook showed us how to make a carrot cake so you might get some requests to bake next week.

Thanks again for supporting your children with their homework tasks and preparing a short talk about their favourite toy. The children were very proud of their toys and good at explaining where they got it and keep it. Who is allowed to play with it and the class were very good at asking questions about their friend’s toys?

Have a lovely Easter holiday and happy egg hunting and enjoy some chocolate treats.

P6: week beginning 27th March 2023

We’ve made it to the last week of Term 3. It’s been a very busy time and everyone’s looking forward to a well deserved break.

Here’s what P6 have been focusing on this week.

In Literacy, for our spelling we were focusing on words linked with the Easter story. We used talking and listening skills to learn more about Easter practices and traditions. Our reading into writing this week was predicting the next part of our class novel and writing in the style of the author. We practised our handwriting skills with recipes and an Easter poem.

For Numeracy we continued to use problem solving strategies. We acted out the situation and used practical resources to get to the solutions. We also brushed up on our multiplication tables and played lots of interactive games.

On Wednesday we had our final skiing and tubing session. It was a chance for some of our parents and carers to come along and see the progress we’ve made. We all had a great time.

As part of Food and Fair-trade Fortnight, we planted cucumber seeds and learned all about herbs and spices. We researched where they are grown and how they can be used in cooking. Yesterday we made Tzatziki dip using cucumber, mint, Greek yogurt and lemon juice. Most of the class liked the taste and texture. We learned how to use the claw grip when using a knife to safely chop fruit and vegetables.

Today we enjoyed watching the P6 and P5’s performance of The Lion King. Later we took part in an Easter quiz in teams of four. It was great fun.

Have a great holiday and look forward to seeing you all at the start of Term 4.

Happy Easter.

P7 – 30th March 2023 – Weekly Round-up

Wow! What a busy, hard working and fun week we have had and now we are all ready for a well deserved holiday…only one day to go!

Here’s a summary of our week.

On Monday we worked with partners during numeracy time, giving peer support and consolidating our ability to calculate a fraction of a quantity.  Feedback was positive with the majority of pupils saying that working with a buddy was helpful to them.  Everyone worked hard during Literacy to write a set of instructions; the focus was on writing a recipe for spring rolls after having made them last week.  Then in the afternoon, we focused on Food Fortnight and the journey of rice from farm to fork.  This was really interesting to learn about and the class demonstrated their learning by creating a comic strip to show the different stages of rice production.

Tuesday was a reward day in P7 as everyone had been saving up their class currency for the last few weeks to reach a target of £3000 and after plenty of team work they reached their goal.  We spent the morning making chocolate and marshmallow Easter cakes and designing and making Easter cards.

After break time, we had a visit from Stacey who works for Love My Bus and she told us all about the benefits of using buses to get around.  She was lots of fun and had us playing some games and even dancing around the hall!

Later on in the day, we watched the film Wall-E, which has a great message about the need to care for our environment, and enjoyed eating our crispy cakes – yum!

On Wednesday, we rounded off our work on fractions by completing an end of topic assessment- this was quite challenging as we had to work independently but everyone tried their best.  We had WOW in the afternoon and managed to get outside to be active for a while.

Today, it was lovely to head to the church for the school’s Easter Service; it is always so nice when we can do things together.  We also had an end of topic quiz to complete based on our topic of China, we completed this through Teams online.  Miss Gibson treated the class to an Easter craft this afternoon to round the day off.

Here are some of the wonderful homework creations, from last week, showing tourist attractions in China, everyone was so imaginative and went to a great effort!

Wishing you all a fabulous Easter holiday and looking forward to seeing everyone back to enjoy the final term of primary school!
