P7F Baking for MacMillan Coffee Morning

This week we baked with Kieran’s mum (Cheryl).  We were  split into groups of 5.  6 people and Mrs Ferguson went to the Co-op in Hurlford to buy the ingredients to bake with. The Manager gave us marshmallows, smarties and chocolate for free.

With Cheryl we made cup cakes.  It was tricky measuring out all the ingredients and softening the butter by hand.  When had fun working out how to half and quarter the ingredients.  We used scales and had to work out how to read them carefully. For the truffles we crushed up biscuits by hand and some of us liked using it as a ‘stress buster’.  We melted chocolate, spooned out condensed milk and added coco powder and coconut.

We had a brilliant time with her teaching us and we can’t wait for her to come back.  We wish for her to come in every week – it was soooo great!

Active Spelling In P4

This week we have been practicing our spelling. Our phoneme was “ou”.

We used pyramid spelling and pipe cleaners to make our words.

P4 will get new spelling homework words every week. Please challenge us at home and ask us about them! 🙂

06.09.19 This Week in P5S

This week in P5S, we have been learning about the 2, 4 and 8 times tables.  We did lots of different activities to help us to remember these multiplication facts including:

  • the dice game;
  • the spinner game;
  • building a number line to 100;
  • using tens and units apparatus to build the answers to the tables;
  • using a 100 square with counters.

  • We enjoyed the Number Line because it was easier to count up to the next answer in the times tables;
  • The Spinner Game was a favourite because it was challenging;
  • The Dice Game was a favourite because it gave us some ‘tricky sums’;
  • The Tens and Units activity was a favourite because we liked to learn the 8x table using it.

In class our topic is France.  This week, we have been learning about French Schools.  There are many differences which we noticed including:

  • the children and teachers share the same toilet block;
  • the children have fancy handwriting;
  • all of their jotters have squared paper pages and have a plastic cover;
  • French children do not wear school uniforms;
  • French children have a lot of homework;
  • at lunch time, they pass the food around to each other, rather than being served by Dinner Ladies.

This week in P7J…

This week in P7J we have been researching Leonardo da Vinci and using our notes to make posters about him. We found out that he learned anatomy and was one of the first Italians to use oil paints! As well as being an artist, he was also an inventor and scientist! He is most famous for painting the Mona Lisa.

We have also been designing T-shirts for Newmilns Festival. Our theme is lace as Newmilns used to be a large producer of lace. They all look nice but there can only be one winner!

In P.E. we have been practising sports hall athletics to prepare for a competition against other local schools. Today we tried out the obstacle races and practised how to throw a javelin.
