P2/3 – Space

Space: Mini Fruit Solar System

Today, P2/3 made a solar system out of fruit. They used a raisin (Mercury), a blueberry (Venus), a grape (Earth), a raspberry (Mars), grapefruit (Jupiter), an orange (Saturn), a tangerine (Uranus) and a plum (Neptune).

The children worked in their groups to figure out the order of the fruits comparing them in size to the planets.

After that, we added the fruit to a skewer to make our very own mini fruit solar system. The children loved trying the fruits as we were making our solar systems, the oranges seemed to be the favourite!

Amazing work P2/3!

P2/3 – Numeracy

Numeracy: Fractions

Yesterday, the P4s joined us to help with our numeracy rotations. We were learning to match a fraction of a shape to the correct fraction and find 1/2 and 1/4 of a number. As a challenge, some of us were finding 1/5s and 1/10s of a number.

At the end of the lesson, P2/3 showed P4 some of the body percussion we had been learning to the song ‘Happy’! The children loved this!

Fab work P2/3 and thank you to P4 for helping us!

P2/3 & P5/6 – Science

Science: Gummy Bears

Firstly the pupils enjoyed learning about solids, liquids, and gasses where they made a human solid, human liquid, and human gas.

In a solid, particles are tightly packed.

In a liquid, particles are less tightly packed and free to move past each other.

In a gas, particles are spread out and move randomly.

Experiment time:

P5/6 created hypotheses of what might happen when we placed a solid (gummy bear) into a liquid (water) and left it overnight.

P2/3 led the learning by showing P5/6 what to do.

We left the cups containing our solid and liquids overnight to investigate today. When we returned the gummy bears has gotten bigger. We learned that this was due to a process called osmosis where water molecules travel from an area of high concentration of water to an area of low concentration of water.

Finally, we discussed how we could use this knowledge to remove the water from the gummy bear. Some hypotheses we have put to the test are:

  • placing the gummy bear in a saturated salt solution
  • placing the gummy bear in a saturated sugar solution
  • placing the gummy bear in just salt
  • placing the gummy bear in just sugar

Why don’t you ask your child about the final outcome?

P2/3 – The Worry Tiger

The Worry Tiger

This week, P2/3 have been reading The Worry Tiger. We completed a visualisation task and made our own worry dolls.

Traditionally, worry dolls originated in Guatemala and were gifted to children who needed a friend to talk to whenever they were nervous or sad. Before bed, they would tell their dolls their worries, place the doll under their pillow, and go to sleep — by the morning, all their worries would fade away!
