P7 VexGo Competition

What a brilliant day we had taking part in the Loudoun Education Group VexGo Ocean Exploration Competition.
After an exciting introduction from Blair Wilson from the Robotarium at Herriot Watt University, and meeting Spot the Robot Dog, we got ready to practise our driving and coding skills ready to compete against Galston, Hurlford, Darvel and Newmilns Primary Schools.
We were very excited to be the top placed coders and very close second placed drivers during the morning competitions.
After lunch Linda MacAuley Griffiths came to visit and learn from all the competitors. She was very impressed with how knowledgeable we all were and she said she could feel the buzz of excitement in the hall.
After a full day of competing we were absolutely delighted to have come 2nd place. It was very tight between 1st and 2nd place and although we scored the same amount of points as Darvel Primary,  they pipped us to the post by being 6 seconds faster than us overall.
We were absolutely over the moon to win £80 in prize money and we have starting planning our budget to spend on treats before the end of term.
Well done to our chosen  Best Team Player, voted by her fellow team mates,  who also received a £10 gift voucher.
A brilliant transition event before we head off to Loudoun Academy with our fellow competitors!
Mrs Ross was very proud of our excellent digital skills, support for each other and kind and positive attitude to all the other schools competing!  Well done P7!

P7 VexGo Robots

Today we started our first STEM Lab using the new school Vex Go kits.  We learned how to build with the kit and designed our own machines first. Mrs Ross and Mrs Conetta were very impressed with our creativity and build skills.

Working in groups, we then followed the step by step instructions to build or Base Robots. We then practised using the drive mode to move our robots around our table. After some trial and error using different driving styles it was time for competitions. We built our racing track and raced each others robots through the slalom. Well done to Olivia our racing winner this week!

We are looking forward to STEM Lab 2 next week where we will be learning to code our robots.
