Over the last 12 years, we have grown Grange Rugby  to include 6 teams and “Schools of Rugby” in S1, S2 and S3. Our aim is to promote a positive ethos and  help pupils develop the values associated with the sport, namely Respect, Leadership, Achievement, Engagement, and Enjoyment.
We are delighted with the success of our club – we have players at district and even international level, but more importantly, we seen hundreds of youngsters gain confidence while improving their fitness, their inter-personal skills their team-working and leadership skills.
We have teams for:

  • P6+7 boys and girls,
  • U15   Girls
  • S1    Boys
  • S2    Boys
  • U16  Boys
  • U18  Boys

Many of our pupils have become qualified as Rugby coaches, completing “Rugby Ready” training, “Youth Coaching Courses”, and “Positive Coaching Scotland”. Some have also gained Junior Sports Leadership or Community Sports Leadership Awards. These opportunities helps our youngsters build many of the skills and qualities that Further Education and Employers find attractive, such as leadership, communication and organisational skills etc.

Everyone is welcome:

  • We have inclusive teams which welcome pupils with additional support needs from Park School, and from other schools which do not offer Rugby.
  • It’s never too late to start playing – recruitment never ends!
  • We always need to do fundraising and help with this is very welcome for players and non players.
  • We have strong links with Kilmarnock Rugby Club and our aim is to become a more community based club.
  • We also include parents and carers in many of our trips and their involvement, help and support is always greatly appreciated.

As part of the ongoing development of rugby East Ayrshire Council, in partnership with Grange Academy, Kilmarnock Rugby Football Club and Scottish Rugby are keen to build on the successes achieved in the School of Rugby program, and recruit new participants for next year’s S1. The School of Rugby is designed as a social and academic development program giving young boys and girls the opportunity to train in a rugby environment during the school week. This course improves physical literacy, fitness and rugby skills, but is also proven to improve pupils’ social, emotional and academic development in their time at secondary school.

The feedback from the program is excellent and the courses piloted at Grange Academy have since been replicated in over 30 schools in Scotland.

School of Rugby currently runs in S1, S2 and S3. By the time pupils have completed S3 they are qualified as rugby coaches, having completed Rugby Right and have delivered sessions to primary schools gaining a Junior Sports Leadership Award (JSLA). They will also have done a First Aid course and complete a Bronze Duke of Edinburgh award. The candidates gain a massive amount from the program, improving communication, leadership skills and gaining confidence, not to mention improving their CV.

If you google “rugby values”, you don’t see player earnings, you see words like Respect, Leadership, Engagement, Achievement and Enjoyment. These align with Grange Academy’s values and are the reason we promote the sport.

Jamie Houston, Mathematics and Head of Rugby, Grange Academy.

The programme begins in S1, and P7 pupils are invited to apply for the programme and take part in trials in May and June.
