From September 2025, Educational Psychology training in Scotland is undertaken as a three year Doctorate in Applied Educational Psychology, taught at the University of Dundee.

Applicants can come from a wide variety of backgrounds, including teaching, youth work and research, and must have an Upper Second Class Honours Degree or higher in Psychology. MSc Psychology conversion degrees are also eligible.

Prior to September 2025, the training model consisted of a two year Masters Degree in Educational Psychology, also taught at the University of Dundee (and previously the University of Strathclyde), followed by completion of the Qualification in Educational Psychology (Scotland).

In the first two years of training, teaching takes place two days a week, with two days being spent in long-term placements with a Psychological Service. In year three, four days a week are on placement. A research thesis is submitted in year three and assessed by oral examination.
