P7 Learning.

Over the past two weeks primary 7 have explored  our thoughts and opinions focussing on  religion and science . First we looked at  the idea of ‘God in Nature’, we created art work to demonstrate this and have researched biblical stories which demonstrate a relationship between science and religion. We have enjoyed many thought provoking class discussions.

We continued on this theme by researching Charles Darwin and his ‘Theory of Evolution’. We researched, summarised, planned and created a formal report on his work. The children have massively enjoyed this topic and have been enthusiastic and engaged throughout.

“It’s been Brilliant” Gemma.

“Lots of interesting ideas” Isla.

Health and Well Being- Bullying

Primary 7 have been discussing bullying. We have talked about different forms of bullying, for example verbal and physical bullying. We have discussed what bullying is, ‘a repeated action over a sustained period of time, that cause fear, hurt and undesirable emotions for the person being bullied’.  We have discussed the difference between random naming calling or fall outs between friends and bullying. We are encouraging children to think before labelling events as bullying.

We have been talking about this in class and in our Assembly and are encouraging children to ensure they treat each other with kindness and respect. In addition we have reiterated the importance of reporting issues to an appropriate adult at the time the event occurs.

As a school we will continue to develop positive relationships and have open and honest discussion surrounding this subject.

Curriculum Overview

Curriculum Overview Term 1

This term in Primary 7 we are working on a variety of new and exciting things. Our first blog post will let you know what we will be doing until the October holidays.

Maths and Numeracy

This term Primary 7 will be covering topics including, Fractions, Decimals and Percentages. We will investigate real life problem solving and will build on our existing knowledge.

Our beyond number topics this term will include time, specifically duration. We will visit properties of 2D and 3D shape. Investigating nets.

Literacy

As part of our novel study ‘Wonder’ we will be exploring various themes.  Our  formal writing will follow the genres of Imaginative and Personal in several forms including extended pieces and diary entries.

We are sharing ‘Wonder’ as a class novel and are allowing pupils to experience the key role of the ‘Questioner’ throughout the text focussing  on Literal, Inferential and Evaluative types of questions.

We are discussing themes of the book, looking at fact and opinion and the behaviours of a quality discussion. We will be celebrating the end of the novel by watching the movie based on the book. We would encourage the pupils if they haven’t seen the movie yet to wait to ensure we can all share it together.

We have started our ‘Active Literacy’ spelling programme which will be catered to individual needs, tailored to suit and challenge all abilities.

Interdisciplinary Learning (Topic)

Our class topic is ‘Wonder’ as mentioned. This novel covers many themes across the Health and Wellbeing outcomes; including friendship, emotions, bullying, equity & empathy, and diversity.

Children will cover all of the above through various experiences including Drama and Art.

Religious Education

We will be building our faith community. Developing our opinions and creating a class ethos which fosters our faith.

We are continuing our journey towards the Pope Francis Faith Award, starting with the gift of Piety, the ability to treat God’s world with respect and care.

Health and Wellbeing

We are currently working on establishing our class community, celebrating our range of personalities and range of talents. We have developed our class charter, making decisions based on aspects of UN Convention of Children’s Rights.

Physical Education

Primary seven have been creating and designing team games.

We will experience badminton and hockey before October.

We are looking forward to meeting you all at parents night in October.
