Curricular Overview Primary 2 Term 2

Welcome back to the Primary 2 blog! Primary 2 have continued to work very hard in term 1b to develop and enhance their skills across the curriculum. Here you will find out what Primary 2 will be learning about and working towards until Easter.

Literacy

Reading – The children will continue to consolidate their prediction skills as well as develop their understanding of sequencing and summarising this term. They will be using a variety of resources including their Bug Club books as they develop this skill. In addition to this, the children will focus on developing their cloze procedure skills, they will use their knowledge of punctuation and sentence structure to support this learning.

Writing – This term the children will be developing their imaginative writing skills through a range of different contexts including; The day my toy came to life and My mission to space. The children will have regular opportunities to develop their imaginative stories through talk with their peers. In addition to this, primary 2 will develop their functional writing skills this term. They will focus on report writing as they record their findings from their water-based experiments through their Water: Boiling, Melting and Freezing topic.

Spelling – The children will be develop their knowledge of joined phonemes as they progress through the active literacy planner.  They will continue to enhance this knowledge through the development of sentence structure. They will continue to extend their learning by up-levelling their sentences using connectives “and” & “because”.

Grammar – This term P2 will continue to focus on developing their understanding and use of punctuation such as full stops and capital letters.  An additional focus will be using connectives such as “and” & “because” to make their sentences more interesting. They will develop these skills through sentence building and independence will be encouraged.

Numeracy and Mathematics

Numeracy – This term the children will be continuing to develop their number processes. They will be focusing on developing their understanding of addition and subtraction strategies. They will continue to use a variety of active/concrete resources to promote independent learning and ensure that all key skills are successfully achieved.

Mathematics – A beyond number focus this term for primary 2 will be measurement. They will develop their understanding of the appropriate language and instruments associated with measure through their water topic. They will carry out a range of experiments which will require them to select the correct tool to complete the experiments. In addition to this, primary 2 will also work on developing their knowledge of money. They will use their knowledge of addition and subtraction to add to find totals and subtract to find change. Moreover, they will have regular opportunities to develop their understanding of money in the wider world through role play scenarios.

Interdisciplinary Learning

Topic – Primary 2 will begin the new term with a mini topic; Grandparents. The children will research the 1950s/1960s to gain a better understanding of the lifestyle their grandparents led when they were young. They will consider their school lives as well as their home lives before making comparisons with their own lives. In addition to this, the children will reflect on the important role their grandparents play in their lives. Primary 2’s main topic this term will be science based. They will be learning about water and its changing states; boiling, melting and freezing. They will carry out a range of experiments to support their learning. They will enhance their learning through researching the Arctic and Antarctica. They will use their knowledge of changing states to support their research.

Physical Education

This term Primary 2 will focus on developing their stamina, endurance and strength through fun fitness (circuit training). In addition to this, primary 2 will have the opportunity to revisit and consolidate their gymnastic skills. They will focus on the sequencing/performance element of gymnastics. Furthermore, the children will work on their racquet skills with Mr Bertoncini during their Wednesday P.E. slot. P.E. days are Tuesday and Wednesday.

Expressive Arts

Music – This term primary 2 will use the Charanga music scheme to develop their understanding of rhythm, pitch and pulse. They will explore a range of musical styles including; pop, rock, reggae, folk and hip hop. As their musical knowledge grows, they will be able to discuss the style indicators, tempo, vocals and instruments using appropriate language.

Religious Education

This term, primary 2 will revisit the story of the birth of Jesus. The children will compare the birth of Jesus with their own births. They will develop their understanding of baptism, reflecting on their own baptisms and the related artefacts. The children will explore the concept; we are all God’s children. In addition to this, through their Grandparents topic, the children will focus on showing love and feeling love from their families and God.

Health and Wellbeing

Primary 2 will be focusing on understanding their feelings and emotions. They will develop an understanding of the tools/ strategies they can use to manage their feelings. The context for this learning will be “inside out”. In addition to this, the children will be learning about the wider world of work. They will be given the opportunity to research different roles within their local community while considering the roles they would like to take up in the future.

Primary 2 Curricular Overview Term 1B

Welcome back to the Primary 2 blog! Term 1 has been fabulous and Primary 2 have been working extremely hard to develop their skills across the curriculum. Here you will find out what Primary 2 will be learning about and working towards until Christmas.

Literacy

Reading – The children will be focusing on developing their prediction skills as well as consolidating their understanding of sequencing this term. They will be using a variety of resources including their Bug Club books as well as utilising a range of familiar fairytale stories as they develop this skill.
Writing – This term the children will be continuing to develop their personal writing skills. The context for this learning will stem from Show and Tell opportunities within the class. The children will have  regular opportunities to bring personal items to school  to use as a stimulus for writing.
Spelling – The children will be continuing to develop their knowledge of initial sounds and joined phonemes as they progress through the active literacy planners.  They will continue to enhance this knowledge through the development of sentence structure. They will extend their learning this term by up-levelling their sentences using connectives “and” & “because”.
Grammar – This term P2 will continue to focus on developing their understanding and use of punctuation such as full stops and capital letters.  They will also be working on using connectives such as “and” & “because” to make their sentences more interesting. Numeracy and Mathematics

Mathematics – A beyond number focus this term for primary 2 will be 2D and 3D shape. They will be using a range of natural resources as well as seeking out opportunities to take their learning outdoors to support their learning experiences. In addition to this, primary 2 will also work on developing their symmetry and pattern skills, this learning will form a cross curricular link with expressive arts and their 2D and 3D shape knowledge.

 

Interdisciplinary Learning

Topic – Primary 2 will be continuing with their topic Energy Around Us. They have been learning about energy as a source of fuel, e.g. investigating a cars need for petrol and the body’s need for food and drink. This topic has provoked a lot of in-depth learning and allows for a range of cross-curricular links, including Technology and Health and Wellbeing.

 

Physical Education

This term Primary 2 will be continuing to develop their ball skills. They will be completing large ball skills before moving on to small ball skills. Primary 2 will then focus on their social dancing skills in preparation for their Christmas parties. In addition to this, primary 2 will work on their gymnastics skills with Mr Bertoncini during their Wednesday P.E. slot. P.E. days are Tuesday and Wednesday.

 

Expressive Arts

Art and Design – This term primary 2 will continue researching the artist Lucy Arnold. They will continue to develop their drawing skills as well as their symmetry and pattern skills through investigating this artists butterfly based artwork.
With preparations for the infant school show well underway, the children will be developing their musical, dramatic and creativity skills throughout this time. Primary 2 will work together with Primary 1 and Primary 3 to put on a show stopping performance!

Religious Education

As Christmas is fast approaching, the children will  be developing their understanding of the nativity story and the birth of Jesus. They will be coming together with primary 1 and primary 3 to celebrate advent on a weekly basis.

Health and Wellbeing

Primary 2 will be developing their understanding of SHANARRI while taking a more in-depth look at each of the indicators. They will consider what each indicator means to them, for example, who makes them feel safe and how do they know they are safe.
Primary 2 will continue  to develop their understanding of what it means to live a healthy lifestyle and more specifically, how they need food and drink to fuel their bodies. Primary 2 will access this learning through their Energy Around Us topic.

Building Positive Relationships

Primary 2 have been discussing bullying both in class and at assembly. They have discussed what bullying is and what it means to them.  They discussed what they should do if they feel they are being bullied or know someone who is being bullied. They understand the importance of sharing their feelings and seeking out an appropriate adult who can help them.

Primary 2 have been focusing on the importance of building positive relationships. They have discussed “what makes a good friend” and have developed their understanding of showing kindness and friendship through their class charter and classroom rules.

Primary 2 will continue to develop positive relationships with their peers. They will continue to be encouraged to think about their actions and treat each other with respect and kindness.
