☺ Sensory Story Telling Tray ☺
A sensory tray is simply a tray filled with materials to excite a childs senses. Materials such as dry foods (pasta, rice, cereals), jelly, sand and water can all be used to encourage sensory play and development of fine motor skills such as scooping, pouring, crushing, squeezing etc.
Sensory Trays are a great way to promote learning through hands-on play opportunities. Letters and numbers can be hidden in sensory trays to practice recognition, and animals or objects hidden in sensory trays is a good way to encourage communication and speech.
Today, we added cereals, rice and grass to make a farm environment, along with some farm animals and tractors. We explored the materials, talking about what they felt like, enjoyed lots of scooping and pouring and practiced our animal sounds!
We then added our story, A Squash and a Squeeze, and some character spoons and used the tray as a way of re-telling, sequencing and discussing characters from the story, and creating our own stories!
The fun is never ending 😊
Don’t forget to show us your sensory trays and fun!!
