As part of our work on literacy the children will interpret the film Zootropolis, by looking at character, camera angles, colour, setting, sound and themes .

Zootropolis looks at different areas of discrimination, prejudice and stereotypes. The children will analyse the different themes and discuss how the roles of different characters move the story forward.  The children will write a critical analysis to demonstrate their understanding.

Writing

Discursive Writing

Information Texts – Leaflets etc

Numeracy

Data handling – The children will learn to interpret data using the terms mean, mode, median and range. We will also look at the reliability of graphs.

Algebra – Children will build on their understanding and be able to simplify algebraic equations.

Fractions, Percentages and Decimals – Use understanding of fractions, decimals and percentages to solve a number of word problems.

Measurement

Health and Wellbeing

Using the language of The Emotion Works, the children will be able to interpret different emotions and expand their vocabulary, allowing them to be more explicit when describing how they feel. The children will also look at how different influences can impact on their emotions.

IDL

Initially, as part of our Scottish Fortnight we will be researching the life and work of Robert Burns.

We will then be learning more about the Scottish Parliament, the children will discuss the difference between a democracy and dictatorship and learn about the different roles with the Scottish Parliament. As part of this topic the class will be split into 4 political parties, creating their own manifestos and policies. The topic will conclude with a mock election.

The children will continue their work with Miss Barrett on Rights, Respecting Schools, this will compliment our work on the Scottish Parliament.

Primary 5 Number Talks

Primary 5 were introduced to the Numeracy Blueprint boards as part of our number talk programme. We learned how to play a partner game in which we ask questions to identify a number, such as ‘is your number a factor of_?’ and ‘are there _ tens in your number?’ to help consolidate our number sense.

We will be using the blueprint boards throughout the term to support our literacy learning.

Term 2 Learning Targets

Literacy

This term, we will be reading ‘Coraline’ as our class novel and completing a modeling block around the text. We will use our Reading Strategies throughout, focusing on Prediction, Metalinguistics, Visualisation, and Inference.

In writing, we will be focusing on Descriptive pieces, using ‘Coraline’ to inform our pieces. We will be working on writing in more detail and deepening our reader’s understanding of character and setting through use of adjectives and similies. We will also look at adverbs in more detail to support our writing and add interest.

Numeracy

We will be focusing on Fractions and Percentages in Numeracy this Term. We will cover Improper Fractions and Mixed Numbers, as well as finding Fractions of a number or set of objects. This will lead us into Percentages, where we will look at finding simple percentages using our prior knowledge with Fractions.

Number Talks will be given weekly, where we will focus on developing methods that are transferrable across all aspects on numeracy, allowing the children to gain confidence with mental strategies.

IDL

As part of the whole school Scottish Fortnight, we will cover Scotland Across the Decades, looking at the heritage and Culture of Scotland through time and making links to the present day. Through this topic, we will research some famous Scot’s and how their Scientific contributions have impacted on society.

Following this, our topic for the remainder of Term will be the Rainforest. We will carry out research surrounding the climate and environment. Within this topic, there will be plenty of opportunities for outdoor and STEM learning.

Health and Wellbeing

Our focus in Health and Wellbeing will be emotions and feelings. We will discuss different types of emotions and how these impact on our feelings and behaviours, as well as looking at some strategies to help us understand and manage this. The teaching will be delivered using the Emotion Works scheme, which is a progressive whole school approach. We will also be looking at Growth Mindset and creating our own mantra of positivity within the class.

We will be developing our Athletic skills in P.E through circuits and team exercises.

Primary 6 ‘s Term 2 Learning Targets

Numeracy

Some areas we will be covering this term are:

  • how to convert improper fractions into mixed numbers
  • about negative numbers and their place on a number line
  • how to multiply 2 digit numbers by 2 digit numbers
  • how to calculate the mean, mode, median and range of data samples.

We will also be revising some of the areas which have been covered previously this year, such as:

  • finding percentages of numbers
  • equivalent fractions
  • place value (including decimal notation)
  • the four number processes (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) using numbers with up to 2 decimal places.

Alongside this we will be completing number talks where the children will be encouraged to talk through how they are figuring out problems as well as using different strategies to help them.

Literacy

Reading

To begin the term we will be undertaking a Media Block which involves developing literacy skills using moving image text. Pupils will analyse and discuss how the film maker uses various ‘Tools of Film’ (such as camera, sound/music, lighting/colour etc) to tell a visual story. A letter will be sent home prior to this.

Later this term the children will be reading ‘Dark Isle’ by D.A. Nelson. Active Literacy reading strategies (Prediction, Metalinguistics, Visualisation, Inference, Main Idea and Summary) will be used to help demonstrate a deeper understanding of the content being read in class.

Writing

This term we will be visiting a range of different genres through taught writing lessons and our IDL topics, including: discursive writing, newspaper articles and diary entries.

The main focus will be on our tools for writing (punctuation, paragraphing, spelling, connectives, and sentence openers) with children learning how to use these features to enhance their writing further.

I.D.L.

We will be completing a short topic on Mary Queen of Scots to coincide with Scottish Fortnight. We will be learning about Mary’s life, her family tree and about her relationship with Queen Elizabeth the First.
